Did Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker just come out on the Muppets Christmas special?

AfterElton.com Senior Muppet Correspondent Brent Hartinger just pointed out a very interesting development in last night's A Muppet Christmas: Letters to Santa special in which Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his long-suffering lab assistant Beaker share a tender reunion and a dance.

Maybe not what some folks might have expected to see in a holiday special, but dedicated fans wouldn't be surprised to learn that the two fuzzy friends share "the love that dare not meep its name". We've contacted the pair's publicist for comment ... I wonder if they could do the traditional "I'm Gay" People cover if they're not actually people?

Check out the clip, after the jump!

What happened to your "no outing" policy, AE?!?!

What Dr. Honeydew and Beeker do or do not do in the privacy of their own home is no one's business but theirs!  If and when they make a public statement, you can comment at that point and not a moment sooner.  Shame on you!

Just for the record, the duo were not dancing in their own

home, but were at a semi-public event that was being taped for a national broadcast. This in no way violated our no outing policy!

Okay...

That was awesome. My bad!

Hilarious

I'm definitely changing my business card to "Senior Muppet Correspondent."

OK, beyond reaching...

Cute way of looking at it, but I think you're reaching.  I adore the Muppets (yes, I own the box sets of The Muppet Show), and we've had gay Muppets before on Logo with Alien Boot Camp - which was hysterical, but Beaker, at least prefers the chicks - look what he wished for when he was wearing the Wish Helmet, a beautiful/slightly trashy female, and more important to him that Dr. Honeydew, since he wished himself away with the girl.

I know you meant this in all light-hearted fun, joking about the dance at the end of the special, and maybe my sense of humore went out the door with my job this week, but reaching to have these characters to be gay, is to me, in my current mood, just one of those reasons the wack jobs on the right wing are freaking out over teletubies - something innocent gets blown out of proportion in a joke - we're trying to convert the children.  It's like trying to accuse the guest stars on the The Muppet Show of bestiality because they flirted with a (puppet) frog.

End of non-sense-of-humor rant.  But bonus points for the "the love that dare not meep its name" line.  I choked on my eggnog.

If we have to kow-tow

to the Religious Right to the point that the editors of After Elton can't make a gay muppet joke for fear of offending the fundies, then we might as well just pack it in right now and head north to Canada.

Why can't Beaker be

Why can't Beaker be bisexual, huh?

Sorry -- meant this as a reply to above. Please disregard

Yeah...Why Not?

Beaker has the best of both worlds.  A gorgeous woman who speaks his language and Dr Honeydew.  Talk about a Happy Holiday!!!

Muppet Pride

So you think they'll be joining Janice, Waldorf and Staedtler on the Muppet Pride float next year?

Or their mobile lab will

Or their mobile lab will roll back into Disneyland on a Gay Day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owJGRvo0y_g

Honestly, I think the scene's pretty open to interpretation- whether friendship or 1-sided or romance... but we're not talking about main characters designed for kids to admire or identify with. Geez, if a gay supporting puppet character in a cast of straights is all it takes to make kids gay...

Better watch your step!

Remember what happened a few years ago, when Bert & Ernie were outed in a short film?

Ernest And Bertram

It's not pretty.

Beaker's a ho!

Remember those rumors about him and Mr. Wizard?
