Last week we noted that the cast of Milk (which at that point included Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Victor Garber, Stephen Spinella, and Denis O'Hare) couldn't get any better. Well, it's a new week! Focus Features has announced that Diego Luna (Y tu mama tambien, The Terminal) has joined the cast of Gus van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic, playing Jack Lira, a troubled young lover of Milk.
It's also being reported that Lucas Grabeel, best known from his work dancing alongside Zac Efron in High School Musical, has been cast as Danny Nicoletta, another of Milk's supporters who also worked in Milk's San Francisco camera shop. Meanwhile, Big Love's Douglas Smith has been cast as Milk supporter Paul Hogarth.

Sounds great...but....
Ok, this movie is already #2 on my list of films I can't wait to see (#1 being The Vintner's Luck)...however....
Is it too much to ask that they consider a different title? Ok, yes, yes, I know Milk was Harvey's last name, but as the title of a film it is a) rather bland and b) too reminiscent of the "Get Milk" ad campaign.
Personally, I think they should reference the era of the 70s, but do so ironically: the classic disco song "Born to be Alive" was released just a few weeks after Harvey's death, and would provide a perfect twinge of haunting irony as the title of a film about a slain gay hero who lived life to the fullest.
Didn't Lucas Grabeel play
Huge Fan
I Love Diego Luna and am glad to see him being cast. The original title of Randy Shilts Book was great, THE MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET, I think, however, that it would be meaningless today to most goers under 30. MILK in a away has a power that addresses how Harvey rose to fame and became an icon in his death for his courage to take on the establishment and ask for the basic rights offered to all Americans. We may see a change before the film is released.
