Videos: Eli Stone's George Michael encounter gets a makeover

George Michael croons to Jonny Lee Miller in an old version of Eli Stone's dream sequence

Way back in 2007 (like we can remember back past lunch!) we were a bit disappointed that Greg Berlanti's intriguing-sounding yuppie-in-ideological-peril dramedy Eli Stone wasn't picked up for the fall schedule. It was encouraging that it might make an appearance mid-season, but given the intriguing premise, gay pedigree and bizarro mentions of George Michael's presence as a guardian angel, we were hoping for more.

And perhaps due to the creative drought left in the dusty wake of the writers' strike, more is what we've ended up getting, with ABC putting a good amount of firepower behind the show's premiere after Lost on January 31st.

While the visions that Eli (Jonny Lee Miller of Hackers, Trainspotting, and Angelina Jolie's lipstick case) had of "Faith"-crooning George Michael seemed initially like a minor flight of fancy in what would otherwise be a pedestrian drama, the ads for the show are putting the gay pop singer and the show's more fantastical (hallucinatory? divine?) elements front-and-center, be they North By Northwest crop-dustings or full dance numbers.

In fact, I've found two clips of the same dream sequence, the first (and likely more current, as it has the official ABC voice intro) of which is much more elaborate and well-filmed than the other, which I'm guessing might have been from the original pilot. Maybe the powers that be have decided to let the show wander further into surreal territory following the success of Pushing Daisies? Whatever the case, the more elaborate scene is definitely better, as it shakes off the low-rent Ally McBeal vibe of the cubicle-heavy clip.

Check out both clips featuring Michael doing what he does best (having "Faith") here and here

Eli Stone

I have watched the DVD Screener for Eli Stone and it's one of the best new midseason shows to come out. It does contain a bit of Ally McBeal-ish, but only to a lesser degree. In truth, it's closer to Pushing Daisies but without all the CGI meets Boston Legal with its craze wackiness.

I do recommend this new series. It's worth watching. Plus, Johnny Lee Miller is still cute, even with his rescinding hairline.

I've seen the pilot and I loved it

I, too, have seen the pilot for Eli Stone and I loved it.  It may be ABC's best new show this season if the subsequent episodes are as good.

When ABC released the clips of it's new shows for the season, this was the one I liked best.

The cast is great, the premise is genuinely fun and, at times, touching.

I also highly recommend people watching the pilot.  It's great entertainment.

I also watched it and even

I also watched it and even though I'm a big Berlanti fan (I Love Broken Hearts Club, Dawson's Creek, Everwood, Jack & Bobby and Brothers & Sisters) I found Eli Stone rather boring compared to the the rest of the 2007 pilots. Maybe that is because I found Aly Mcbeal annoying with the out of nowhere visions. Pushing Daisies is my favorite new show this season and the surreal moments of both shows are very different(One great and the other just WTF). Maybe I don't dig the show because I'm not a fan of the proeminent Georges Michael, maybe because I just think the main character is just plain crazy. One thing is sure... I don't feel the Berlanti voice in this show... the only positive thing is the warmth that the main character has for his new client and her child... the rest of the episode is just uneven or going to very strange places .

Eli Stone

heez cute.. sure hope we see many, many scenes of him shirtless.

I'm confused. Is it bitch slap or slap a bitch?

I've also seen the DVD screener...

...and found it very entertaining. The pilot manages to introduce all the main characters quite well and Jonny Lee Miller is a very likeable lead. The show is basically a legal dramedy though it remains to be seen if it will push the wacky quotient as much as Ally McBeal or Boston Legal. I don't think the writers are aiming for the quirkiness level of Pushing Daisies though.

The George Michael office dream sequence v2.0 offers a bit more pizzazz over the original scene in the screener.

All in all, highly recommended

I will watch

Jonny Lee Miller has always been one of my favorite actors. I've loved him since "Trainspotting" . Whatever his hair looks like he is a gorgeous man. I hope the show is good. I don't like "daisys" and I never liked "Ali M" but the clip for this show was pretty funny.

Don't expect too much shirtlessness

Don't expect Johnny Lee Miller to have too many shirtless scenes in Eli Stone...and certainly NONE in daylight...

He is heavily tattooed from his lower neck and upper chest, to his back and arms.  You can see all the quick cuts in the first episode and heavily makeup-ed upper body -- that's why those scenes are so short and quickly cut, so you don't notice the makeup as much. If you slow it down, you'll find that even with makeup the tattoos show. Don't expect anything but brief glimpses here and there in his bedroom if they want to maintain that clean-cut preppy image.

Shirtless Jonnie

After all that I never even watched the show. I don't get the whole tattoo craze. The only tatoos I've seen that I actually don't mind are on Davis Beckham's body. In which case I don't even notice the tattoos. Where have you actually seen pics of Jonnie's tattoos?

Jonnie Angel

I think he was shirtless in TRAINSPOTTING. Plus he was married to Angelina Jolie you would expect it around her.  I wonder what his Granddad, Bernard Lee, would say?

Here's a link to a picture of the Rentboy shirtless.  When did he get the tats?

Tats

He has had them for years....

That link you posted of him getting whipped is from 1996 (dead Man's walk) -- you can see his tats in many of the movies and tv shows he has done since. (Smith, most noticably)...see his full filmography at: http://imdb.com/name/nm0001538/

Johnny Lee Miller is no spring chicken. He's playing a character in Eli Stone younger than he actiually is.
