Emmy nominations announced: Neil Patrick Harris and Bryan Fuller among the gay noms

This morning gay actor Neil Patrick Harris and gay-fave Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies, Wicked) announced the nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards at the crack of Jesus in Los Angeles.

In a nutshell, Pushing Daisies, the wonderfully loony brainchild of out exec/writer Bryan Fuller, killed it this year with 12 total noms (behind only 30 Rock, which is also awesome, in total noms for a network series), along with cable series John Adams and Mad Men. Gives hope that American audiences aren't as stupid as they think we are.

Among the gay, gay-friendly, and gay-adjacent noms were...

UPDATED: Initially, Zeljko Ivanek (Damages) slipped past me - he played a gay (albeit closeted and kinda evil) character. Also, Oliver Platt and Sharon Gless were nominated for playing gay guest characters on Nip/Tuck.

NPH RULES!!!!

But y'all knew that.

Glad to see that Walt Whitman documentary got a nod. Most teledocs of this kind are real snoozers, but this one was quite thorough in its examination of Whitman's life and loves.

Tina Fey: Soon to Top an Angry Puppy Top Ten

Don't forget that Ms. Tina has already made her lesbionic comic debut during her Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 8) cameo. In my book hooking up with Willow Rosenberg ANYONE a gay-fav.

It's a good morning

I'm having such a good morning thanks to Cheno and NPH! They were adorable and hilarious announcing the nominees this morning (watch video here) and the fact that my fave Pushing Daisies got so many noms makes me squee.

The crack of Jesus

Brian, even though Terrence McNally alluded to its existence in "Corpus Christi," I'm not sure how much you can discuss the "crack of Jesus" without some fundamentalists getting hot and bothered. As it were.

I'd also steer away from the "crack of Mohammed" . . . and definitely no cartoons of it. I might suggest moving away from the bible superheroes altogether and going for an obscure-but-hot '70s dawn reference; how about "crack of Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn"? (Leigh J. McCloskey was my adolescent TV-movie crush . . . gay-for-pay with Police Woman's Earl Holliman. Gotta love that.)

The blog is a beautiful place, where Leigh J. McCloskey gives it away for free.

The Wire

What about The Wire's pitiful one nomination for writing? Don't tell me that AfterElton forgot Omar!?!

It's a shame that the Academy didn't give The Wire its due.

I stopped caring long ago about the Emmys but not even a bone..

for The Wire as best drama? With the exception of Lost, there was no show that I looked forward more to seeing. I watch Boston Legal and understand the love and hate that people have for the show and the nominations/wins by Spader/Shatner, but even as a big fan of BL, any episode of Wire trumps BL, which (unlike The Wire) will have its final 13 episodes next season if the academy wanted to honor the show as well as the actors.

Speaking of actors, not a even a prenom for Dana Delaney's tour de force performance in a show that to me almost approached first season boldness right up to the writers strike.

Heidi Klum got a nod over Phil and Kat Deeley as best reality TV host? No one is cooler than Phil or more committed or endearing than Kat. No best direction for a single episode of The Wire or Lost, but Boston Legal yet again?

I'll be posting my own best/worst in my blog if only to document what moved me for future reference as my memory fails me. I have made it a habit not to watch any awards shows for several years and know that a lot of this based on popularity contests/campaigns/and very valid differences of opinion so it can't take away from what I feel. I do pay attention to the nominations as for lesser known actors the nod and a possible win may really give them a boost.

At least Dana Delaney has a bunch of awards from her days on China Beach. Last year I was hoping to see the second to none Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost nominated as she kicked butt and to me gave best supporting performance (male or female) of that season. The Academy at least recognized Michael Emmerson who I think is this year's Elizabeth Mitchell.

I am much more concerned about there being no gay people on scripted TV than all this stuff so it's really not a biggie and best wishes to all nominees.

No Matthew Rhys for the second year in a row

I get that the Emmy nominations are based on the viewing (or recommended viewing?) of like one episode by the nominating committee so the committee doesn't see or isn't supposed to consider a great season-worth of work.

But come on, folks, Rhys makes every scene he's in in B&S so much better. He makes every actor he works with in a scene step up their games.

And please stop nominating William Shatner. He deservedly won for his work on Boston Legal. But that was 4 years ago. He does need any additional attention until he turns 90 and has yet another amazing comeback. (And mark my words, he will!)

William Shatner

I sooo agree with you about Shatner.  I know he has this psycho following in the entertainment community who love him because he's so crazy--but he's really not good.

Did somebody say Leigh J. McCloskey ?

Oh how I love Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn ! It's the guiltiest of all my guilty pleasures -- a rent-boy tearjerker. Not only did it star the lovely Leigh but Policewoman himself - Earl Holliman  -- was a featured player. Quite beyond camp, especially when  Alex can't land a job at Baskin-Robbins.

And that's not to mention a memorable turn by "Lina Lamont" herself -- the great Jean Hagen -- as a sympathetic landlady.

Oliver Platt, Sharon Gless

Also Oliver Platt got a "guest actor" nomination playing gay (annoyingly) in Nip/Tuck, as did Queer as Folk's Sharon Gless, (in a WONDERFULLY campy role). And wow, I don't get the acclaim given to 30 Rock. 90% of its jokes just don't work for me. But clearly I'm in the minority!

Agreed on all, esp. Oliver Platt and 30 Rock

No need to even address the over the top mess that was Oliver Platt, but clearly 30 Rock is one of those shows that the critics fawn over that even some who don't like it seem to want to embrace it as the 30 minute narrative is on life support. I think that the critics have been praising it a little too much, but the Academy is even more overt in its idolatry of this show as it dominated every single category like no other show.

Maybe its a question for another thread, does anyone have any opinions regarding the nomination process. Specifically, I am thinking of the separation of Comedy and Drama categories as there are so many that are hybrids and don't fit either. I know that the producer of shows that encompass both genres have a choice of which category to put themselves in, but a like Boston Legal to me is as comedic as Desperate Housewives or even Ugly Betty. While both portrayer of Boston Legal have kicked ass in "Drama," which would seem to be the harder road, it's strange that the broads from Desperate Housewives got no love. Even America Ferrara's nomination and win last year seem a little out of place and I am thinking out loud if there might be a better way to break these babies down. Maybe the Oscar approach is better than this Golden Globe-like division. Kind of like best in show.

I think the Kodak Theater,

I think the Kodak Theater, or wherever the Emmys are held now, would collapse if Kathy Griffin won both of her nominations and got to deliver two "Suck it, Jesus!"-esque speeches for it.

Let's all cross our fingers for that.
