Fantasy Casting: Brokeback on Broadway

Over at Towleroad today Andy linked to an unconfirmed rumor that Brokeback Mountain is on its way to Broadway, and that producers have Hugh Jackman and James Marsden at the top of the list for the leads.

Andy heavily disclaimers the rumor, and probably rightly so -- this sounds more like Wolverine/Cyclops X-Men slashfic than anything else. But hey -- if Carrie can make its way to the stage, why not a powerful love story like that shared by our beloved sheep-sitters? (Try saying that five times fast.)

So let's pretend this is a possibility, which leads to two questions:

  1. Is this a musical?
  2. Who should play the leads?

If it's a musical, I think Cheyenne Jackson is a shoo-in for Jack. He's a triple-threat (and then some) and he's got the boyish energy the role would require. Jackman seems a bit long in the tooth for Ennis, given that he's supposed to be getting married for the first time as the film starts and would be considerably older than Jack unless he was also cast with an older actor. But he does have the chops for it (literally and figuratively). How about Patrick Wilson?

If it weren't a musical (as I have no idea if he can sing), howzabout Tony winner Billy Crudup?

What do you folks think? Musical or no, who would best play these guys on stage?

    Any reason...

After seeing Hairspray this weekend and discovering that James Marsden can actually sing and dance WELL (and is not just a pretty face), I joked that they should make an X-Men musical with Hugh and James reprising Wolverine and Cyclops. I wonder if someone made a similar joke and it got out of hand?

Still, Cheyenne would be AWESOME in the Jack role though really, if it were a musical, it would seem like a pretty bad idea (though a straight play transfer might not be much of an artistic challenge).

But no Billy Crudup please. Ugh...

still, any reason to get 2 guys to hump in a pup tent on stage. Can't be TOTALLY bad...

    no changes! NO CHANGES!

Keep Hugh and James! I would go to EVERY show! I would, seriously!

If I HAD to pick two other acotrs (and I really DON'T want to), I suppose:

    HUGH JACKMAN and JAMES MARSDEN!!

    ;)

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

In the first blush of pre-Oscar BBM enthusiasm, I suggested on several blogs that Brokeback was prime for a Broadway musical. I even offered to write the libretto, if someone would work with me on the music. So what do I do with my songs now? Anyway, I still think it's a money-maker (not quite the same thing as a good idea). If I were doing the casting, I'd give serious consideration to Billy Crudup (what's wrong with Billy, Vance? He was on my original Top Ten Hottest list!). But there are several possibilities. Now that we know Justin Timberlake can act, he might make a decent Ennis. Truth be told, however, I would prefer a couple of unknowns in the leads. Casting Hugh Jackman and Cheyenne Jackson would make it all about Hugh Jackman and Cheyenne Jackson. But, if I were to pick my dream cast, I might go with out actors Chad Allen and T. R. Knight, as Ennis and Jack, respectively. Now, I wonder what Annie Proulx is going to make of all this?

I forgot to mention my picks for the West End version: Ioan Gruffud and Jesse Spencer, as Ennis and Jack, respectively. Who cares if they can sing?

    In a recent interview with

In a recent interview with James Marsden over at BoxOfficeMojo.Com (you can read it here at http://www.boxofficemojo.com/features/?id=2349&p=.htm), James did state that when he was filming X-Men, Hugh actually said he should do musicals and actually asked him to play his lover on Boy from Oz. But because of scheduling conflicts and such, James couldn't take the job, even though he wanted to.

It's a good read. And I think it's a good possibility for Hugh & James to be on stage together. :)

    James Marsden sang

his ass off on Allie McBeal in the final season I think. He was gorgeous then and I'm thrilled to see him singing again!

    It's a no-brainer!

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill should play Jack and Lurene Twist. Ennis and Alma Del Mar should be Kenny Chesney and Renee Zellweger!

    It's twue...it's twue.......

Brokeback Mountain the Musical has been confirmed.
The opening number is sung to the tune of "My favorite Things".

Horses with saddles and boots made of leather,
Cowboys who find love because of the weather,
    Forbiden love a-bove the timberline,
This is what makes Brokeback Mountain divine....

I see Adam Pascall as Ennis, Hugh Jackman as Jack, Tommy Tune as the foreman, Idina Menzel as Alma and Kristen Chenoweth as Lurleen.

The show stopping first act finale, the big "I wish I knew how to quit you" number will have 500 tap dancing sheep and be more heartwrenching than when Grizabella goes to kitty heaven in "Cats".
There won't be a dry eye in the house.
