First pics and preview of Sigourney Weaver in "Prayers for Bobby"
We've been anticipating the upcoming Lifetime movie Prayers for Bobby with cautious optimism ... on the one hand, the format is a frequent punchline to jokes that usually have "has-been" or "Meredith Baxter Birney" somewhere in the setup. But on the other, the material and the talent involved are far above par. Sigourney Weaver stars in and also produced the film, which is based on the true story of Mary Griffith, a woman whose son Bobby killed himself after his parents would not accept him as gay, and who went on to become a crusader for gay rights herself. After the jump we've got a slew of production stills from the movie as well as the first preview, and from all accounts it looks like our optimism will pay off when the movie airs on January 24th. I read this book when it
I read this book when it first came out, and it affected me immensely. In fact, it haunted me because I recognized myself so much in Bobby. I remember seeing Bobby's mother on 20/20 and being moved by her honesty and openness. It's unfortunate that it took the loss of her son for her to realize that the hateful message of many churches is simply wrong.
I'm sure I'll watch the movie--alone with a big box of tissues.

Boom mic?
Bobby Griffith
The poignancy of this story has moved me for years since I first heard about Bobby Griffith in the Advocate. It never fails to bring me to tears, because it was nearly my story too. Since then I have seen this happen over and over again. One does what one can to reach out to these kids in hopes of showing them a better future lies ahead but you never get over the pain when we lose another one to ignorance and self-righteousness. Gay visibilty will always be a beacon for those who struggle with homosexuality. Accept yourself and others as part of God's fabric and not his animosity.
To borrow a phrase, "Let us love you until you can love yourself."
That's all I am saying
INSIDEGUY
Sigourney.
You had me at "Sigourney Weaver stars in and also produced the film."
I'd see Sigourney in anything, even if the film were about the invention of the egg salad sandwich.
Saw the choral version of this done in San Jose a few years back
Joan Van Ark (?!?!!?) narrated, and very well; she also looked smashing. It was a beautiful piece, very haunting.
I haven't seen Weaver really sink her teeth into some seriously dramatic material since that movie a couple years ago with Emile Hirsch as her son--title escapes me. Before that, I might have to go back to "The Ice Storm." (Heard she was outstanding as an autistic woman in "Snow Cake," but it was barely released; same, unfortunately with "A Map of the World.")
It may be gooey to say it, but I seriously believe films and projects like this save lives, in that they help parents who may be having problems accepting their gay kids, and thus helping stop a cycle of suicide, substance abuse, runaways/homelessness, etc. The stills look terrific.
Imaginary Heroes

I think the title you are looking for is "Imaginary Heroes". I have seen IH, and I loved it, Sigourney Weaver did an amazing performance.
I definitely think I'll watch Prayers For Bobby, it looks very sad, but it's one of those movies you just have to see.
Blubbing
My eyes welled up just watching the preview. I'll be a wreck if I watch the whole thing. Call me sentimental but I feel every loss of a gay child to suicide or murder is a loss of one of my family members.
Love Dan Butler and I'd watch Weaver if she was playing an egg salad sandwich.
won't watch it....
just saw the preview on tv. don't think i will watch it. after watching 'boys don't cry' for the second and last time ever, i realized i can't really watch another movie dealing with a hate crime/tragic suicide because someone is not accepted. I probably won't even go see 'milk' either.
with that random commentary said, i hope this movie touches someone and makes them think twice about their actions or helps a lost...soul so to speak find their way in life. :-)
