"Forbidden Love" video clip update: Go ask Olli
Today's Forbidden Love update (this is actually from Friday's episode) begins where our last update left off: with Christian getting his ass handed to him in the ring by The Steroidinator. After his rather unceremonious trouncing (and after Olli plays Florence Nightingale to his wounds), Christian begins to explore the world of legal performance enhancers ... and I don't mean "Horny Goat Weed". It's nice to see that the same default storylines on American television (athletes and steroids, two great tastes that taste great together!) are universal. The big question is, will Christian succumb to the lure of boxing glory and decide to shoot up?
Not if Olli has anything to say about it, because when he hears that Christian is trolling performance enhancement message boards (courtesy of a prying Olivia), he gives his boyfriend the coolest "oh no you didn't" gaze and sternest talking-to east of Oakdale.
Check out all the drama after the break! Thanks, as ever, to Gays of Daytime and Nanna for the clip and subtitles. Submitted by on Tue, 2008-06-03 10:49. |

Glad to see Olli step in
Glad to see Olli step in to stop Christian from making the worst mistake of his life. Olli's almost brought to tears pleading with Christian to give his word he will not take those steroids. It's clear he loves Christian dearly and fears what taking those drugs could do to his physical health.
Great acting, great show, loving all things Ollian.
Ollian Relationship Dynamics
Here we go yet again illustrating why Ollian is a superior couple (supercouple?) to Nuke.
When they do have an argument it's meaningful, based on intelligent issues and packed with real-looking emotions. Olli is worried about Christian's health, plus other troubles that could result from him taking steroids. He digs in and takes a stern stance. Christian gets stubborn, but soon realizes that Olli is only being stern because he loves him and that he's right. End result, Christian listens to his boyfriend and they compromise. Olli will help him train so that Christian can stay focused while still spending time with Olli.
*SIGH*
I compare this to the idiotic conversations between Luke and Noah. There one of them (usually Luke) is simpering and pleading. The other (usually Noah) is completely irrational. The net result is that they blunder right into trouble like a couple of kids in a fireworks factory. Plus their relationship goes absolutely nowhere.
It is totally unsurprising that Ollian have an adult relationship complete with sex life, while Nuke are like something on a teen show. Scratch that, teen relationships on shows like Degrassi are more mature than this nowadays.
It's really great the level of interaction between Christian and Olli. You feel like there's actual emotional engagement there, not just soap opera angst. It's also nice that they can move off the gay/coming out topic a bit and have something else to chew on.
Character-driven vs. plot-driven.
That's really what it comes down to. As a student of the soap opera, the stories over the years that most enthralled me were those that were driven by character--even if the plotting utilized traditional soap clichés--as long as the events resulted from character and their complex relationships with others. The Sonni/Solita story on Guiding Light in the late 80s may have used classic soap staples such multiple personalities, amnesia and blackmail, but it was gripping because the characters were so fascinatingly complex (and brilliantly portrayed by Michelle Forbes as Sonni/Solita and Joe Breen as the manipulative Will).
This is what we see with Ollian, deeply realized characters whose actions and behaviors, and the events that befall them, result directly from themselves, and are marvelously portrayed by Jo and Thore into the bargain. Honestly, I have to say this is one of the best portrayals of a gay relationship I've seen, heck, one of the best portrayals of a couple, gay or straight.
And so it saddens and frustrates me to see the débacle that is Nuke on As the World Turns, characters that behave irrationally, with no rhyme or reason, simply to advance a ridiculous plot. Sadly, it also seems as if Van (especially) and Jake have thrown in the towel and are now just going through the paces--knowing their lines and hitting their marks, but little more. It's incredibly dispiriting.

Collecting the paycheck
That really is what it now boils down to I think. Luke and Noah are written so badly that I don't see much enthusiasm from Van or Jake in their portrayals. They're just reciting their lines and aren't even bothering to inject any energy into the voices or facial expressions. They're just doing their jobs, following the inane storyline.
Christian and Olli are much better written, and Thore and Jo are visibly putting more effort into playing their roles. They both do a lot of little things with facial expressions, casual touching and tone of voice that make them much more convincing as characters. This is why I think that they're so gripping. It's just great to watch them onscreen.
With Nuke I have to force myself to get through their cheesy lines and the tortured plot.
Is ATWT taped in front of an audience do you know? Because I was thinking that the acting looks like stage acting, which often involves exaggerated gestures and less subtle detail since the audience won't be able to see more nuanced stuff. VL looks more like TV acting where closeups are expected and so actors think more about small details.
If ATWT had a live audience...
...I imagine we'd hear more laughter than any random episode of Three's Company.

Psionycx...this is so
Psionycx...this is so true what you say regarding Jake and Van putting enthusiasm and effort into their roles. I actually did watch the clip of them today...Wow! what a mess. i'm sure they must feel a little embarrassed about what this storyline has become. And i'm sure they have to bite their lip at times to prevent from bursting into laughter at some of the lines they have to speak or scenes they have to act out. Now, contrast this with Jo and Thore, who are given much better material to work with, and IMHO are much better actors. They put so much into their scenes. You can see that they really care the audience see them as a real couple. Those little facial expressions from both of them, especially Thore, who has become a master at portraying how he is feeling at that very moment through a look or a crinkled brow. Those little touches of a hand, or a hug, a raised eye brow, or certain smile...all done so naturally and at the approriate time for that particular scene. That is what makes them seem so real. I see Van and Jake as simply acting to silence the backlash and critism their characters have taken for their lack of affect and unrealistic portrayal of what's suppose to be two men in love.
At this point, the Luke and Noah storyline has become a running joke. I mean, just read all the comments on the posts today and it's nothing but how sorrowful and pathetic the storyline has become. The clips I saw had me laughing, especially when Luke got wholloped on the head. This was a serious scene, so why was I laughing? It's become pure comedy to me. When I watch Olli and Christian I am revited by their evey move. The scene with Olli begging Christian to not take the steroids had me glued. Now, can you imagine how that same scene would play out if it was on ATWT...I'm sure many of us would be havng a big old belly laugh because it would be written and acted so badly.
ATWT....
ATWT really is in a league with the Naked Gun movies at this point isn't? And Van is Priscilla Presley while Jake is Leslie Nielsen!
I agree, it really is hard to not laugh at some of this stuff. I still have flashbacks to a few weeks ago when Noah had that line: "I can't understand it either." I was rolling.
Thore and Jo played that whole scene arguing over the steroids to perfection. Rather than playing it as melodramatic, which is what would have been done on ATWT, it was played as serious. And it felt that way.
It's sad really, that we can't get any better here in the U.S. But thank God for our buddies in Germany: Ivan, Nanna and Tihkon, who share the clips and subtitle them for us!
Joseph...agreed, this
Joseph...agreed, this really is one of the best portrayals of a couple, gay or straight i've honestly seen on TV. I was captured with the John Paul and Craig storyline on HollyOaks, but the Olli and Christian story on VL has topped it. All credit goes to Jo and Thore who are doing a masterful job at being a convincing loving couple. For me, Jo and Thore as Olli and Christian just make this amazing couple. And I hope the writers realise this and don't do anything foolish like having a fake marriage for green card storyline suddenly thrown into the mix. Although, judging from the spoiler picture in the earlier blog, I don't think we have anything to worry about.
oooohhh shnnaap.....
The ending to this clip had me on the edge of my seat. I have a feeling that christian is going to try steroids still....
Btw, Whenever i close my laptop, it turns off and so i have to restart it...so i found it interesting that Olivia just pried it back open and voila....there it was. :-P
You can fix that
Depending on OS you can usually modify your laptop's options regardng whether it remains up, goes to sleep or shuts down when you close the lid.
With Olivia around he might want to password protect his machine and require a login when it's brought out of sleep.

I don't know if any of these comments are aimed at me, but I never meant to imply that Afterelton was lagging behind in presenting Verbotene Liebe a couple of days late. God knows, we're lucky to have it at all. But somebody mentioned that it's no longer available in his country, and, as I find myself in a similar situation, I merely mentioned that the show is usually posted on Youtube. It never occurred to me that I was linking to a later episode. However, for those of us who live in Europe, any assistance in locating the show is appreciated. In fact, I was just thinking; I am on a satellite service that includes a handful of German and French stations; however, I have a hard time following the satellite listings because they are in Bulgarian. If someone in Germany would let me know when Verbotene Liebe originally airs, and on what network, I may be able to get it on my satellite. (I managed to watch an episode in Stuttgart a couple of weeks ago, but I have no idea what the network might have been--RTL?) Let me know, and I'll try to arrange to watch it (the time difference between here and Germany is one hour). And I promise not to leak any spoilers to Afterelton!
It airs on ARD, 6 pm
It airs on ARD also known as daserste. It airs on 6 pm (German time)
If you go to the gays of daytime message board, there are some people from the Netherlands and from England who watch the show live. Maybe they might be able to give you some assisstance as to how to find the channel.
