Gay pilot update: Not much to see here, folks

We noted yesterday that we'd check in with news about any gay or gay-friendly pilots being picked up at this week's network upfronts. And our relative silence on the matter today is an indicator that there's not really much gay getting picked up today.

So far, of the 16 shows profiled in our recent article on gay visibility in pilot season, only these have been picked up:

ABC

Cashmere Mafia (gay exec producer Darren Star)
Dirty Sexy Money (gay co-producer Greg Bertlanti; senator in love with transsexual)
Eli Stone (gay producer Greg Berlanti)
Pushing Daisies (gay creator/producer Bryan Fuller -- cast photo above)

CBS

Swingtown (gay director Alan Poul)
Viva Laughlin (camp value; potential gay character)

So we're at six out of 16, with some announcements still to come. But it looks like all the hopefuls that actually had gay characters (Dash 4 Cash, M.O.N.Y.) or starred out actors (Wild Life) have been passed on (as well as the highly-anticipated Football Wives). Granted, the week isn't over -- and CBS, FX, and FOX have yet to announce final schedules. But with NBC and ABC's final schedules announced, it looks like we'll be seeing gay folks behind the scenes but not necessarily on them. Pickups like Gossip Girl and Chuck come from gay-friendly producers, which is nice and all -- but why does it feel like gay representation has stalled on television for 2007, even after after hits like Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters?

We'll check in with updates as news becomes available throughout the week.
