Gay TV Recap: Superhero's jig is up *-*-SPOILERS-*-* Last night's penultimate episode of the hilariously illogical, curiously camp and always unpredictable Sci-Fi Channel reality show Who Wants to Be a Superhero? was ... well, illogical, camp and unpredictable. The challenges were more opaque than usual, which is what perhaps resulted in the ultimate ousting of the show's gay hero, Parthenon. It's disappointing to see Parth get the gold-glittered boot after his very first time in the bottom three and even more disappointing that we won't have a gay hero in the finale, but let's face it: he did kind of blow those first two challenges, and more importantly, his impromptu jig lacked spirit. And we can't have a superhero who can't pull some jazz hands when the situation demands. This episode was all about cracking codes, something that the heroes were not too terribly good at, for the most part, especially when it came to finding the hidden challenges within the challenges. The first code-crack involved a classroom full of fourth-graders, whom the heroes had to enlist to answer some questions in order to decipher a coded message. Of course, the real challenge here was in seeing if the heroes could relate to kids. Hyper Strike was a big hit, which is unsurprising since the guy does somersaults for a living (not that there's anything wrong with that). Hygena and Defuser seemed to get along well enough, but Parthenon went into Bank Branch Manager Def Con 4 managing style with his kids, which didn't endear him at all. Now, Parthenon has always performed at the top of the superhero class, and won several challenges. He's smart. He's got good problem-solving skills. But he's a bit iffy in the people skills department, at least within the boundaries of this competition, and he does seem to place finishing the job above anything else both in terms of the kids and in what we're about to see. After having to work with the kids on questions about superconductors and what-not (!?), they have to go to a public park, where they receive instructions from Stan Lee. Only it isn't Stan Lee ... it's EVIL STAN LEE!! Remember how Doctor Black Party stole Stan's pencil and used DNA from it to clone an Evil Stan? Well, he's using him to send phony instructions to the heroes. Interestingly, new Evil Stan looks just like regular Stan, right down to the tinted glasses and I've-been-sitting-at-this-fricking-desk-for-200-years posture, but his voice is even more monotone. Evil Stan makes the heroes do all kinds of stupid stuff that gets increasingly dangerous, including sending Hygena out to stop traffic (um, the on-set insurance rep must have been smoking crack in an alley at that point). But Parthenon actually makes the biggest goof in the challenge when he takes a cane from a person crossing the street and, under Stan's orders, takes it to the other side of the street, does a dance, and leaves it on a trash can. Let me repeat that: HE TOOK A WALKING CANE FROM A PERSON, TOOK IT ACROSS A BUSY STREET, DANCED A JIG, AND LEFT IT ON A TRASH CAN.
I was pretty shocked to see this, to be honest. But as with the kids, Parthenon was blinded by finishing the task and didn't stop to think that leaving a person with difficulties walking in the precarious position of having to play human Frogger to get their cane back maaaaaaaaybe wasn't the heroic thing to do. The heroes then get trapped in a shipping container and have to get out. Parthenon actually takes the lead here and his ideas work, but his management style again isn't the best, and the other heroes are a bit annoyed by him. At this point I realize that it's not looking good, and I can feel already that this will be my last recap for this show. I cry softly into my Mallowmar. Sure enough, when it comes time for the elimination, it's clear that Parthenon's fate is sealed when Slightly Less-Evil Stan shares with the heroes that the kids were asked after their electromagnetic physics social which superhero they liked best, and Parth had the lowest score. Actually, he didn't get a single vote. Ouch! Parthenon seems shocked by this, and notes that he has nieces and nephews that he's very close with. I'm actually very glad that they kept this in, as the unfortunate stereotype that gay men hate kids is one that is pushed all too often. So Parthenon doesn't hate kids, and he has good rapport with the kids in his life. It's just strangers' kids that he treats like new recruits at an AmWay training session. And with that, Parthenon is called onto the red box for the first time and sent home. Did he deserve it? Well, from the first two challenges this week, probably. But Hygena has been in the bottom three almost every week at this point and she also underperformed in the first two challenges, although her rapport with the kids was much better. As with last season, it's pretty obvious that the show kind of picks and chooses who they want to go when and rationalizes accordingly, so it's hard to take any of these eliminations too seriously. It's sad to see Parthenon go, because I tuned in to this show mostly to see his Boy Scout pluck and goofy-but-determined expression. Unabashedly, unapologetically out from the get-go, Dan Williams brought the show a smart, virtuous, and heroic gay man for fans everywhere to look up to, gay or straight. And for that, Parthenon, you'll always be a superhero to us.
Oh, and the finale's next week if you're still interested. Submitted by on Fri, 2007-08-31 13:12. |

EVIL STAN LEE IS NOT EXACTLY LIKE REGULAR STAN!!!
He has all-black eyes, which requires him to wear dark-dark glasses, not just the usual tinted-dark ones that Regular Stan usually wears.
It's TOTALLY different! I can't believe you--and, more importantly, the superheroes!--didn't catch this!
However, I agree that this show can't get any more campy, and that that's a very very very very good thing.

Parth-a-gone!
I was really upset to see him go. But, alas: I think he deserved it. He claims to be terrific around kids, so how could he have been such a dictator in the classroom? From the way the show was edited, it certainly made him look unfriendly and bossy... no wonder none of the school tykes voted for him! And to 'borrow' someone's cane and leave it on a garbage can?! It was pretty clear to me that he was heading off the show come elimination round!!
Out of the three remaining heroes, Hyperstrike totally looks and acts the part the most in my opinion. Not to mention he looks great in spandex! And, yes... he's got the moves all right. But I want to see Hygena win it. That's because she's soo adorable, kind and I want her to 'win one for the girls' (... even though she sort of embodies the 50's housewife stereotype?!). Also, she would rock soo hard if she teamed-up as a dynamic duo with Mr.Clean!
All I can say is "Dr.Black Party" had a brilliant plan, and I can't wait to see "Giant Evil Stan" in the next episode! I totally love it!!!! I love the fact that all of these challenges add up to one big story arch! It's a great change from last season, and much more like reading a comic book!
Parthenon parts ways
Parthenon didn't deserve to go. The guy has been on all the winning teams (I believe), and rocked the individual challenges. He was the only one to helped a deliveryman with his boxes; he was the only one to stick up for Mr. Mitzvah, when everyone else wanted to root out the mole, and he intercepted the messenger with the files of their secret identities. Last night was Parthenon's first, and only, time on the chopping block ... unlike, say, Hygena who's been in peril a number of times. Hygena should've been sacked. She offered no leadership in Dr. Dark's trap - unlike Parthenon - and took the most time to solve her message (good thing she wasn't racing against the clock to defuse a bomb!). I really think the show felt it needed to get rid of a guy, or else they'd have a Final Three that was all-male.
If working with the kids wasn't Parthenon's finest hour, he has shown a sense of humor and a flair for creative problem-solving, with the can-do spirit of an eager-beaver Boy Scout.
When I visited SciFi's message board for the show, I got the sense that Parthenon has his share of haters, who objected to his sexual orientation. Which is sad. But I don't think the gay community could've asked for a much better representative.
Ultimately, I believe all the others - Hygena, Hyperstrike & the Defuser - have been on the chopping block and gotten a second chance. I'm sorry Parthenon wasn't offered the same opportunity. Dan Williams, you're a hero; Stan Lee, you're a zero.
Gay Superhero Ceiling
WW, you are right.
I was going to say this several times in the what's gay on TV tonight posts but decided to hold back and not sour the experience.
Partheon was a superior hero. He's won more challenges than anyone on this season or the last.
They had to kick him off now or else they would have to make a doll of his superhero. This is like on other reality shows where gay contestants get to the end but never win the prize even though they are the best.
I looked around the message boards during the season to gage the reaction of the audience. It's been subtly negative regarding the gay contestants. I've been hearing a lot about how Hyper-Strike is good-looking and sexy. You know he's not. They are just trying to elevate him because they don't want to root for a gay person.
I think Hyper-Strike is going to win. He will be like Taylor Hicks from American Idol. The audience will abandon him after the finale because they really don't care about him.
I disagree.
Why?
He's adorable.
Did anyone see the aftershow
Did anyone see the aftershow interview?
And I think Parthenon was treated unfairly. For starters, it should be pointed out that ALL of the heroes followed Evil Stan's orders; it's not like they got to choose which command to follow, and Parthenon decided to choose the worst one.
And while Parthenon didn't do the greatest with the kids, he still overall had a better record than the others.
The Aftershow with Feedback
I did watch the ''Aftershow'' with Feedback (who seems like a really great guy), and Dan said, ''I am extremely NOT okay with this, but once they call your name, there's nothing you can do ... but take it like a man.'' Clearly, Dan was trying to be the good sport, but I'd love to know what he really thinks about getting so unfairly eliminated. Plus, what did he think about the online idiots who disliked him because he's gay?
By a weird coincidence, I just picked up a copy of Out magazine, and there's an interview with Perry Moore, who's written a first novel for young adults, called ''Hero.'' It's about a gay superhero who comes out, has his first same-sex kiss and saves the world. And it's being published by Hyperion, a unit of Disney (!). The article says Moore is in talks to bring it to the big screen with Stan Lee (!).
