Gaylights from Variety's 10 funniest scenes from the TV season

Variety recently ran its list of the ten funniest TV moments of the season as a part of their "Road to the Emmys" coverage, and three of the selections are of the gay-interest variety. I've included clips of all of them after the jump, in case you missed 'em.

First on the list (at #1, even) is the "Fireworks" episode of 30 Rock, in which a gay executive played by Will Arnett angles for Jack's job and Jack (Alec Baldwin) enlists sexually ambiguous page Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) to seduce him. I didn't find the episode particularly funny, to be honest -- it felt recycled compared to the rest of the season, which I thought was generally hilarious (particularly the Paul Reubens episode). Considering that Tina Fey, whom I generally like, hasn't really been strongest in gay humor ("Gays in Space", anyone?), I wasn't surprised that it wasn't funnier -- but I am surprised it ended up on this list.

Next (at #3) comes Ian McKellen's guest spot on Extras, which absolutely does deserve to be here. McKellen's self-effacing turn as a rather dense and incredibly self-absorbed version of himself is priceless, as is the look on Ricky Gervais's face as he describes how he acted like a wizard.

And at #4 comes out actor Neil Patrick Harris's "slap bet" with Jason Segal (as Barney and Marshall, respectively) on How I Met Your Mother. Pretty funny stuff, and definitely a standout for the series, which has had its ups and downs. The clip below is a bit light on context, so it is important that you know that Harris plays a womanizing cad on the show -- they're not slapping the heck out of a gay character.

So what do you think of the list, overall? Any glaring exclusions?

You forgot a great one

The "slap bet" is a classic (especially for the "Let's Go to the Mall" music video), but the REALLY gay episode of "How I Met Your Mother" is the one where Barney's black gay brother takes the whole gang to a gay disco. Quite something. All the girls loved going cause they could dance without being hit on, and the guys (who are straight) didn't mind being hit on by gay guys at all.

Slap Bet

I love the Slap Bet episode! I have it saved on our DVR and watch it all the time. Even better I have the song on my IPod!

30 Rock

30 Rock seems to be one of those comedies that exists mainly because it's cheap to make and the critics like to praise it to feel important. I don't know anyone who watches the show. I never saw anything from Tina Fey on SNL that suggested humor (besides her ever-present smirk), and I didn't see anything on 30 Rock either.

A Top 10 list that includes ...

"Two and a Half Men" ?  These are supposed to be the best? No wonder I don't watch sitcoms anymore ...

Hmm I love the 30 Rock

Hmm I love the 30 Rock clip, I thought it was hilarious. I also liked how they showed the attraction of one man to the other without one of the straight characters going 'ewww.' I dunno I like Tina Fey's work, Mean Girls being a case in point. Maybe it's because you guys are American and are used to comedy like that.
