Golden Globe nominations ain't got much "Milk"; Neil Patrick Harris scores a nod
Minutes ago the nominations were announced for the Golden Globe Awards, and there were a host of nominations of gay interest. But disappointingly, Milk was all but shut out of the nominations, failing to earn nominations in any category except Best Actor. Okay, that just sucks. On the bright side, out actor Neil Patrick Harris earned a nomination for How I Met Your Mother, and several gay-inclusive television shows got nods, including Alan Ball's True Blood, The Office, Ugly Betty, Weeds, Mad Men, The Office, and Bernard & Doris. A list of the noms of interest, after the jump.
Movies Sean Penn - Best Actor, Drama (Milk) Meryl Streep - Best Actress, Comedy or Musical (Mamma Mia!) Mamma Mia! - Best Picture, Comedy or Musical Heath Ledger - Best Supporting Actor Television Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) - Best Supporting Actor Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters) - Best Supporting Actress Bernard & Doris - Best Mini-Series or Movie Made for Television Susan Sarandon (Bernard & Doris) - Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Made-for-TV Movie Ralph Fiennes (Bernard & Doris) - Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Made-for-TV Movie True Blood, Mad Men - Best Series, Drama The Office, Weeds, Entourage - Best Series, Comedy America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) Tina Fey (30 Rock) - Best Actress, Comedy Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Anna Paquin (True Blood) - Best Actress, Drama For the complete list of nominees, head on over to the official site. In this year's case Tropic Thunder took 2 of the slots - if they broke out this category like they do for lead performer it would have played out differently, I imagine.
yeah, i've never understood that.Submitted by

Tom's "performance" was seen as a comeback, and Robert Downey Jr., as well. Can you handle THE 80'S ACCORDING TO SNICKS? Do they submit episodes?Submitted by
Ed Kennedy (5970 points) (1117 posts) on Thu, 2008-12-11 10:05.I seem to recall that for Emmy's, the actors submit episodes for consideratio, showcasing their strongest work (TV of course) - do they do it for the Globes? I was just kinda curious which NPH would have chosen for Barney to get him nominated. Several to choose from.

Pretty convential, by the book, and a little to focused on the technicalities of poltics than the characters' motivations. Its definitely one of the 5 most IMPORTANT films of the year, but best..maybe not. It really paled in comparison to the documentary for me. The acting nomination of Sean Penn is right on the mark. I thought Emile Hirsch was the only other one I'd consider for supporting, but the part was just too low profile I guess. Ive always found the Golden Globes weird though, the way they throw musical and comedy together, like you could create the darkest, most dramatic musical ever, and have it nominated next to 4 light fluffy comedies. They just a bunch of whoresSubmitted by

And yes, that had that debacle with Pia Zadora, but that was 1982. ... That said, the Foreign Press are such starf*ckers. Case in point: Tom Cruise's nomination in ''Tropic Thunder'' - over Josh Brolin, James Franco or Emile Hirsch in ''Milk.'' Cruise has been nominated 6 times for a Globe and won 3 times. He's one of their pets. Brad Pitt, too, who I suspect will win over Sean Penn, even tho' Penn won Best Actor from BOTH the L.A. AND N.Y. film critics. I can't take awards seriously, especially with the ''Brokeback'' Oscar debacle.

Bill S (1812 points) (367 posts) on Thu, 2008-12-11 17:05.She was one of the martian children-"Gir-Mar"(girl martian, get it?). She didn't make any other movies for almost two decades, but in between tried her hand at singing, hitting Billboard's Country singles chart 4 times (the best she did was reaching #55 with a remake of "Baby, It's You" in 1980). In 1981 she returned to movies in a sleazy melodrama titled Butterfly, based on a James Cain novel and co-starring Stacey Keach and Orson Welles(!) This role was apparantly enough to justify her winning the Golden Globe for "New Star of the Year", a category that as far as I know, is no longer handed out. I'm blanking out on who her competition was, but I think it included Kathleen Turner (who'd just made Body Heat) and Elizabeth McGovern (who'd appeared in Ragtime, which was actually her second film. Pia's subsequent film roles weren't any better (if anything they were worse, although she does have a cameo in the original version of Hairspray.) She also continued as a recording artist, hitting the pop top 40 with a remake of Shirley Ellis' "The Clapping Song" and receiving a Grammy nomination in the "Best Rock Vocal, Female" category for "Rock It Out" You wanna know what's really sad? I didn't have to look up ANY of that. I need a life. Or Emile Hirsch's phone number. LEAVE PIA ALONE!!!!!Submitted by
snicks (12168 points) (4612 posts) on Thu, 2008-12-11 15:29.Yes, I have seen Butterfly...i've seen (and own) everything she's been in (including Voyage of the Rock Aliens and the greatest picture ever made about Hollywood, The Lonely Lady). And just let me state for the record that Pia did NOT win best actress for Butterfly. She won "most promising newcomer of the year", and sure, her husband threw a party for the HFP, and none of the members actually saw the movie, but ....that's beside the point. dback (1612 points) (329 posts) on Thu, 2008-12-11 20:45.Future epitaph: "It seemed like a good idea at the time." She did a CD called "Pia and Phil" (Phil being the Philharmonic), and she actually has quite the pipes for belting. And her "Hairspray" cameo was genuinely inspired, offering some of the biggest laughs in the movie. Yes, the Globes did in fact honor "Brokeback" with Best Picture--even though Clint Eastwood looked like he'd just bitten down on a bug when he announced it. If "Milk" were to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and then win without even having had a Globe Best Pic nod, it'd be only the 3rd movie in film history to do so, after "The Sting" and...insert ironic drum roll here..."Crash." No worries, "Milk" is going to take multiple awards from various critic's groups before year's end. I'd just like Penn to stay ahead of Mickey Rourke and Clint Eastwood. |

The Hollywood Foreign Press has always been questionable.
They gave Madonna an award! And everyone always points to Pia Zadora's win...but she deserved it. I just can't believe they nominated Tom Cruise for wearing a fat suit in Tropic Thunder, but no supporting noms for Milk. Really, Hollywood Foreign Press?

Bribing is such a strong word..... Down with the Golden Globes!
At least it was not WALL-E that took Milk's place, but to ignore Dustin Lance Black, a screen-writer who not only wrote the script on spec but succeeded where so many before him failed miserably to me only heightens what a joke the Golden Globes are. If some of their movie-related oversights are bad, those choices look inspired next to those for television.
I would not be surprised if the folkd at the Globes came up with a special award for NBC's Ben Silverman to celebrate his contributions to the continuing success of TV programing and commitment to fictional dramas in broadcast TV.
As usual, I won't be watching the telecast and will focus on checking the pretty dresses and daper males online after it's all said and done. Unfortunately, the lack of a nomination for Josh Brolin will opens up the field for best couple as Josh and Diane Lane are the ones the beat in this most important of battles ;-) I sure hope that the writers strike does not affect this most of important awards shows (he says with sarcasm).

The Lonely Lady is my all time favorite bad movie (and when i say "bad", i mean "wonderful"). if you do tackle it, please do it justice.
Upon winning the big "award", Pia's character gives the speech i've been patiently waiting for someone to use in real life:"Ladies and gentleman, i can't tell you how thrilled i am to have received this award. it's a wonderful...compensation for having caught so many unhappy glimpses of himself while working towards it...thank you to blah, blah, blah...not all of them gave as much as they took, but that's no surprise, for in this business the price of success is very high, especially for a woman. I DON'T SUPPOSE I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO'S HAD TO F**K HER WAY TO THE TOP"
