Connor Paolo turns down "regular" status offer on "Gossip Girl"?

Gossip gay Michael Ausiello is reporting that actor Connor Paolo, who plays gay teen Eric on Gossip Girl, has been offered "regular" character status by the show and has refused the contract offer.

It might amount to nothing more than an actor not wanting to be hemmed in by a role that hasn't been giving him too terribly much to do, but of course the Ghost of Gay Teens Past rears its ugly head whenever this kind of thing happens.

I for one hope that Eric isn't going anywhere regardless and that there are no Dekkerian underpinnings to the news.

Connor Paolo's got commitment issues with Gossip Girl

I could be wrong but I think the Aussielo article indicated that Connor turned down the contract because he didn't think he'd benefit from being a contract player.

Even if he became a regular cast member with a contract, he still wouldn't be ensured to have more episodes  than he does now and he'd be paid the same as he is now but he'd be commited to Gossip Girl.

It didn't seem to have anything to do with the character being gay or the actor worrying about playing a gay character.

Seems reasonable to me. As a young actor you might want a bit more freedom to do other things (unless they could offer him a promise of more screentime)

Connor may

not have been offered a large pay raise to tie him down to the show.  That could changed depending on how much the producers are willing to invest in the show and his character.  In these cases it is usually about money.  Think back to Suzanne's Sommers exit from THREE'S COMPANY.  The Thomas Dekker affair had some roots in that same thing.  NBC was not willing to pony up the money to guarantee him regular status.  The way things are going with HEROS it is looking like he made a good choice.

Length of contract?

I read in some article that the main characters signed 6-year contracts, which I thought was insanely long. If this was the case, maybe Connor didn't want to be that restricted for a relatively minor character.
