Gossip Girl's gay dad
Back when we were tracking the various fall pilots and their gay visibility quotient, we weighed whether Gossip Girl, the new CW show from The O.C. mastermind Josh Schwartz, might be worth a mention. Based on a series of books, the tale of affluent prep school teens did feature some gay experimentation in later volumes and an absent gay father, but the pilot didn't feature either. But given Schwartz's willingness to feature gay characters and make a straight male "bromance" the crux of The O.C., we didn't give up entirely. Now that the show's been picked up, it looks like the gay dad character will be making it to screens, according to Michael Ausiello. Aus sez:
I can't find the breakdown he mentions, but the character seems in line with the book's version, with a few minor tweaks. According to the Wiki entry on the book series:
At any rate, this gives a much-needed gay injection to The CW, which at this point is putting all its queer eggs in Tyra Banks' Fabulashed basket. When we know more about casting and when dear ol' Dad might appear, we'll let you know. Submitted by on Wed, 2007-09-26 07:58. |

Gossip Girl Review
I doubt this show will be around long enough for us to see Blair's gay Dad. If he does show up it will probably be like Chris Carmack's Dad in THE O.C. who was around about a minute. Benjamin McKenzie becomes Dan, Mischa Barton becomes Serena and what's with he over hill rocker and and the much married groupie, are they Josh Scwartz's idea of adult supervision or a re-hash of Peter Gallagher (Sandy Cohen) and Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke). Then Blair is Rachel Bilson's Summer.
These actors all perfom like they just got off the plane from John Wayne Airport and the story so far doesn't really ring true. The second episode was better than the pilot but not much. These elite kids all have a sense of entitlement to A-list parties. Butin reality would be more concerened with their fears of failure and the pressure to take over the reins of their family money when the times comes. This show should be more along the lines of Whit Stillman's film METROPOLITAN than LESS THAN ZERO. It is a world of fashion, debutante parties, and charity functions.
I am going with DIRTY SEX MONEY myself with its far superior gay pedigree, not to mention having Prime time's first transgendered actrees actually playing a transgendered part.
