Governor Schwarzenegger terminates Harvey Milk Day

After letting it sit on his desk for weeks and probably using it as a coaster for his morning wheat germ juice, Governor Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that proposed making the birthday of slain San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk a "day of significance".

Note that we're not talking "paid state holiday" or "mandatory Secret Santa day" here: the bill merely wanted to honor the efforts of the nation's first openly gay man to hold prominent political office and pay respect to his services to our country, which resulted in his being murdered. Conservatives lobbied heavily against the bill, no doubt terrified that acknowledging the contributions of an openly gay man would cause a hellmouth to split open underneath the state.

Schwarzenegger's official reply: ""contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level." In other words, "if you want to keep having your little gay parties and parades and whatnot, we won't send in the men with machine guns. Yet."

Happy Wednesday.
