Has John Barrowman been "Served"?
Here's some (potential) good news for you fans of British TV: in a recent story about London's Pride festivities, the blog over at PinkNewsUK noted that out actor John Barrowman is being lined up to play recently deceased actor John Inman, best known as the camp-as-a-row-of-tents clerk Mr. Humphries on the Britcom Are You Being Served?, in a biopic.
Inman, who was himself gay and wed his partner a mere year before his recent death, played his flamboyant character with a great deal of wit and charm, and was reportedly discouraged by public response that Humphries was a "negative gay stereotype". Barrowman, on the other hand, is from a newer generation and has found success in roles that are far less camp -- it will be interesting to see him take on Inman's life and works, if he indeed is getting the role (we've been unable to confirm the rumor, as Mr. Barrowman has somehow slipped out of the restraints in Michael's basement -- so don't get too excited!). This kind of begs the question: who would best play recently deceased American TV star Charles Nelson Reilly? That is, if the American film industry actually cared about its late gay stars? (ouch...) EDITOR'S UPDATE: The webmaster for John's official site says the news isn't true. Submitted by on Wed, 2007-06-13 15:39. |

(Potential) good news indeed!
"Are You Being Served?" was one of the few television series with a prominent gay character back in the day. I first saw it when PBS began airing it (when? about a hundred years ago?) It would be great to see a movie on his life. Mr. Humphries was one of my heroes - not negative at all i think, and I have been in love with John Barrowman since the first season of the new Doctor Who series; tell michael he's in my basement now! :P
Anthony Rapp would make a pretty good Charles Nelson Reilly. We would have to tone down the hair a bit though...

it is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice
North American film and tv industry
Over here, we use them up, and then toss them aside like a dirty kleenex. We don't care about our stars once they are gone. Hell, even the Tony awards show did such a brief "in memoriam" that if you blinked you would have missed it.
I'd be fascinated by such a biopic on John Inman. Some years back PBS did a "behind the scenes" show on Are You Being Served? and it was fascinating to hear the tales behind the making of the show. And to see what the actors had been up to since the two series ended. (Captain Peacock is on Last of the Summer Wine now, the longest running comedy series in England.)
It would be nice to see some biographies (other than the stuff pumped out by what used to be the A&E network before it became reality show central) on some of our favourites from the past.
This is completely untrue...
This is just a silly rumour. This is a direct quote from John's official web site webmaster....
..this is completely untrue and the original post
started with Pink News (who in tiny print, after skipping a few lines said

I'm looking forward to that autobiography, though!
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.
