Heroes loses another gay character?
It's kind of funny that our main page article today is an interview with Parthenon, the gay guy on this season's Who Wants to Be a Superhero (there's also a lesbian in the bunch). Because it seems that the tube's biggest superhero effort, NBC's Heroes, has lost a gay character for the second time. This time its Claire's much-hyped lesbian cheerleader friend who has reportedly dropped (much-hyped after the debacle that was the de-gaying of Zach, Claire's previous confidant). Apparently the actress hired to play the role, Lyndsy Fonseca, has nabbed a series regular gig on Desperate Housewives, so her character has been written out after just one episode.
In related news, it's also being reported that freshly Hot-100'd Zachary Quinto (Sylar) may play Spock in JJ Abrams's new Star Trek movie. Quinto of course played Tori Spelling's gay sidekick on So NoTorious. In case you missed it, here's the hilarious (and appropriately steamy) ex-gay sauna scene. I don't know who this
I don't know who this actress is, but I think it's stupid of her to leave a show like Heroes for Desperate Housewives. Just saying..
Why can't they just hire another actress to play the role?? Is that impossible or what? Why didn't they know that this actress might be unavailible in the future?
Sylar = Spock
I'm with you
I think it's a fantastic idea. But come on, your eyes quickly went to the last paragraph because of that adorable picture!
;)
what is up with this show
what is up with this show and its gay butterfingers? I'll admit I held on after the Zach situation because I loved the show, but that wretched season finale was the last straw for me, and this news certainly isn't enticement to come back
OK.
Both cases involved the people behind Heroes wanting to have a gay character, and then being forced to change their plans when the characters' portrayers left the show.
This is unfortunate, but it's not Heroes' fault that Fonseca and Dekker wanted to go.
Not exactly
If you're saying that Dekker's being up for SCC was what led his management to pressure the HEROES folks into changing the character's sexuality, then that's partly true. But otherwise the character was de-gayed long before he left the show -- it wasn't simply a matter of the actor playing the gay character quitting, which apparently happened here. It's undeniably odd that the two lone gay characters have vanished like this. And this new cheerleader was announced with such hoopla ... wasn't she locked into a contract that would keep her on the show for more than a single episode? The creators said from the beginning that NBC was not exactly open to having gay characters on the show, and all this is sounding eerily familiar.

Bait and switch
Origins
I do hope when they showcase the "Origins" episodes...hopefully, one of them will end up being a gay male. At least then, we can vote for the character to be added to the cast. :D

Not That Big A Loss
Before I say anything, let me disclaim that I'm a bisexual woman. When I found out there was to be a lesbian on Heroes I have to admit my first thought was cop-out if they were trying to make up for the charater Dekker played. After all, lesbians are straight males wet dream fantasy so to me, it wasn't a concession, it was something NBC considered to be more palatable. Think about it: how many sweeps episodes feature a little girl on girl action. Now, tell me how many feature boy on boy?
I rest my case.
Not a big loss 2
A really super super hero
Why not just have an asian, gay, disabled, jewish, single mother of six super hero and have done with it?
There is the adage that you can't please all of the people all of the time and I think it's admirable that the writers have tried to develop a gay character. It's a shame it hasn't quite panned out yet but I think it will happen in time.
Besides, if every show on TV featured a gay character, would that be truly representative?
One key factor, IMO, is that
A bigger factor, however, is that Heroes' early promotion made it clear that one character was gay, only to back down on making that part of the broadcast show. That makes Heroes kinda like the friend who keeps promising to take you out for a fabulous dinner, only to cancel while you're waiting at the restaurant every time.
Heroes promotion in the UK
That's interesting to hear. I heard about Heroes through a UK sci fi magazine and no mention was made of Claire's friend (I forget his name). The promotion for Heroes in the UK made little, if any, mention of him too.
I wonder why they added that angle in the US? A lot of marketeers believe that gay consumers are 'early adopters' so maybe that factored into their campaign?
