Heroes producer calls out Dekker's Management

Thomas DekkerI know it may seem like this is water under the bridge -- but the truth is, we never got a concrete public statement from the folks behind Heroes regarding exactly what happened to the intended-to-be-gay character of Zach (a story which AfterElton.com broke to the world back in December).

It looks like we finally have something on the record: at the recent Wizard World convention in Los Angeles, the show's fans put it to the panel of the show's masterminds exactly what happened to the sexuality of Claire's friend Zach, played by Thomas Dekker. Producer Bryan Fuller replied with confirmation of our suspicions, according to SpoilerTV's coverage of the panel:

The panel seemed at first reluctant to address the controversy surrounding the sexuality of Claire’s friend Zach, portrayed by actor Thomas Dekker. But Fuller did eventually say, that Dekker’s management “didn’t want him to be playing a gay character” for career reasons. The panel then did acknowledge that they’d originally conceived of the Zach character as gay, and that the ambiguity is a result of an “unfortunate miscommunication.”

First off, tip of the hat to the fans at the convention for not letting the producers off the hook on this one (I hope it was an AfterElton.com reader who lobbed the question!). And it's good to have official word on exactly what happened (assuming that SpoilerTV.com is reporting correctly), so that we can put this thing to rest and simply resolve to boycott Dekker's career rather than skip any more episodes of Heroes. Because let's face it -- that's a hard habit to break.

This is so pathetic from

This is so pathetic from Dekker’s management. Do they think that he is romantic leading role material? Dream on buddy...

hmmm

I posted this on the old forum but since nobody posts there now, I'll copy it over here ::: I find it funny that actors are afraid of typecasting if they play a gay role. I have three words for any TV actor who is afraid a gay role will have them typecast forever: Michael C. Hall. Michael did a great job as a gay character on Six Feet Under and does a great job as a straight character on Dexter. Among most people I know (gay and straight), people are “oooh, David from Six Feet Under has a new show” in reference to Dexter, NOT “that gay guy from Six Feet Under has a new show”. And Hall plays both characters so well that nobody (besides ardent conservatives who think Elton John is a threat to their children) cares that he was gay on one show and straight on the other. For any actor who is worried that playing a gay character will suddenly have them typecast for gay roles for the rest of their career, all you have to do is look at Hall.

I hate this

God! Things like this annoy me more than anything in the media world. I don't care that they have stopped the character from being gay, but I can't f*****g stand it when the storyline of a TV programme has to be changed to make some ponces that shouldn't have any say in the matter happy! Like Joan of Arcadia! That show got ruined because the damn channel wanted it to go in a different direction! If they'd have left it alone, it could have been brilliant, but NO! Heaven forfend that someone would let something happen without interfearing. God I hate Americans!

But he was never actually de-gayed ...

It may be true that Thomas Dekker's management may have wanted him to be str8 on Heroes and that the producers agreed to go along with it, but in the end, as far as the millions of people who watch Heroes and who don't read Queer blogs like this one are concerned, the character was never actualy de-gayed. Yes, his sexuality was always more ambiguous or inferred rather than actually stated but before his character's arc ended, there was no sudden announcement that he liked girls. I think Zach left Heroes the way he entered ... as gay as himself (less a few memories). And, while I hate that his management and the producers thought they needed to go the route they did, lets not crucify Thomas Dekker necessarily. For a rather young and just up and coming actor in Hollywood, he may not have known that was their intention and even if he knew, he may not have thought he could dispute his own management. As anyone who was ever a young 20something knows, the job world can be very daunting and often we let people with more experience make decisions for us even if they may not be the right ones. Not every young actor is Neil Patrick Harris and can just fire or reprimand their "people" without damaging their career. Nothing is ever as black and white as it would seem when we read blog entries or any media content for that matter. I'm not saying he had no part in it, just that we don't know and so we shouldn't be so quick to vilify him.

I agree with Sretav

Dekker is only 18 or 19, he isn't in a place where he has full control of his career. Don't forget that Neil Patrick Harris' "people" tried to shoot down the gay rumors as if it was something to be ashamed of, and this guy has been around since Dekker was a baby. You can't say that Dekker feels the way because his publicists are arrogant. Plus, all you gotta do is go back to the clip of him on Grosse Pointe back in 2000 where he played a flamboyant and gay 12 year old. If a 12 year old actor was comfortable enough in his skin to play that part (don't forget just how evil schoolyard taunts are at that age), I highly doubt he had a change of heart and got all religious against gays at 19.

Dekker

Then he needs to fire his management. It comes down to the fact that because of this young man's participation in HEROES, a gay character was erased from the show. I don't see how that is acceptable. The argument that "he didn't know that the character was gay when he signed on" doesn't go very far with me, for a few reasons -- not least of all the fact that he had played gay before without issue (heck -- it might have even gotten him this role in the first place).

And according to our sources

it was very clear the role was gay from the beginning.

Dekker a question?

Is the actor himself gay?, or is that "unknown" It was clearly a gay character like when that Cheerleader (not the main character) said something like "I Hear you got a boner in the changing rooms" Also what's with this posting thing why cant we just post why do we have to review, and it go to different formatting (loose of all the breaks) view then click post?!

No word whether

Dekker is gay or straight. He's never said as far as I know. Regarding the posting of comments, I'll pass on your comments to the tech side to see if there is a way to make easier.

Thats what i was guessing with Dekker, ah well.

Glad to hear your passing on the comments, its not a HUGE deal but its a extra somewhat point less click and sorta puts me off commenting a bit....
