Heroes' Zack: Nope, still gay.
One of our eagle-eyed readers (thanks, Andros!) pointed out that despite being de-gayed by the network over a year ago, the character of Zach (or Zack, as he's called in written form) on NBC's Heroes is still pinging the gaydar in the show's online graphic novels. In case you missed the whole brouhaha, the cheerleader's best friend, Zach (played by Thomas Dekker), was conceived and written as a gay character until the creative forces behind the show were pressured to de-gay him. The character disappeared shortly after, as Dekker was cast in the soon-to-debut Terminator series. But it looks like the folks behind the supplemental graphic novels that accompany Heroes still carry a torch for the lost gay teen, as evidenced by a recent issue that flashed back to Claire's time in Odessa. It seems that Elle (Kristen Bell) was spying on Claire and quickly dismissed the notion that Claire and Zack were romantically involved or that she could seduce Zack into giving her a videotape she was after. Sure, the book doesn't actually confirm Zack's sexuality outright, but the repeated references are rather amusing, considering. Submitted by on Thu, 2008-01-03 09:05. |

ANTI-HERO
Heroes is one of my favorite shows, but this disappoints me quite a bit. I remember reading something about this a while back. The actor's (Thomas Dekker) agent didn't want him 2 play gay roles because it would (supposedly) tarnish his image. Does anyone else find this weird? Since when does an unknown actor or their agent have the power 2 control or influence what a network does with their character's storylines. If that was how Hollywood worked then no one would ever get killed-off and shows would never be cancelled.
I also find it kinda ironic that one of the themes in Heroes is being different from the majority. In the beginning I thought Zach would B openly gay and that was how his and Claire's relationship would florish because he would understand what it feels like 2 B different (and she really needed that at the time). This would've been a beautiful relationship (and storyline) between the 2 characters. And it would've been a very different take on a Will & Grace kinda friendship.
I don't know if this was the actor's choice, but the article I read said it was his agent's doing. Either way I just don't think unknown actors should be choosey with their roles especially since their R so many willing actor's waiting tables all over Hollywood. And it's been a while since playing gay hurt anyone's career (that I know of). Unless the actor's really gay and they're afraid it'll shine through. If that's the case then he must not B a very good actor.
I just think that this is a very cowardly career choice. That could've been a really cool gay role and I want more gays in Sci-Fi since that's what I'm into. Even if it was his agent's action I say get a new agent. Well I'm not letting them off the hook. Heroes has until the end of the season (extra time due 2 writers strike) 2 either out Zach completely in the graphic novels or introduce a new gay character (preferably one with powers, lesbians okay too), otherwise I won't be back 4 the third season (I mean it NBC). And I'm officially boycotting Dekker's new show "Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles" in which he has a starring role. Who's with me?
"Heroes" and The Case of the Missing Gays.
