"I Love You Phillip Morris" picked up by new distributor for Valentine's Day 2010 release

Well, this is mixed news. In the pro column, gay fugitive comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, which wowed audiences at Sundance (for its sheer guts and central performances by Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as jailbound lovers) but had considerable difficulty securing distribution, has been picked up and will eventually see the light of the projector bulb early next year.

In the con column, it's a distributor who doesn't exactly have a lot of firepower, so the hurdles between one of the highest-profile gay flicks in the pipeline and your hometown cinema are considerable.

The film is the first acquisition made by new distributor Consolidated Pictures Group, which launched at Sundance 2009. The folks behind the group had success self-distributing the wine country indie Bottle Shock last year, so let's hope their first official release is a successful one.

I can't believe it took this long

I can't belive it took this long to get a distributor. I even started to think I'd have to wait for the DVD release.

What sucks even more though is that it won't be released until next year and only in a limited amount of movie theatres. Maybe it would have been better with a straight-to-dvd release after all?

I'm mostly baffled about this whole thing. I can't believe people are this uptight about it. It's a comedy, of course it has some foul language and some not-PG 13 scenes, but which comedy doesn't? I mean, just look at American Pie.. The sole and only reason the movie didn't get a distributor earlier is because of the gay context, it's obvious. I think it's a shame, cause it looks like a good movie, with good actors, and it actually looks funny, mixed with some romance in there too. I wish the distributors had some guts instead of sitting on the fence this whole time. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it finally got a distributor, I'm just sad it took this long.

I am looking forward to finally seeing the movie though, I've been excited about it since I first heard about it a year ago.
