IMHO: "30 Rock" (3.22) Season Finale: "Kidney Now!"

It's been a busy couple of weeks around here [subtly tilts gargantuan diamond engagement ring so that it catches the light] and I just had the chance to catch up on a few of my favorite shows last night, and realized that the finale of 30 Rock, which was one of the gayest of the series, hadn't gotten a mention yet.

So I'm strappin' on my IMHO boots and tackling "Kidney Now!"... which you can watch in its entirety after the jump, if you missed it. But beware: Clay Aiken cameos and fake Tyras await!

Here ya go:

So, first and foremost, there's nothing quite like a triple-cameo by Clay Aiken, Mary J. Blige AND Elvis Costello in one scene. (Not to mention a drunk Cyndi Lauper a bit later on.) And featuring Aiken without the requisite gay joke? CRAZINESS!

The gay joke actually came later, when Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) spoke at his high school and directed his message of being proud of who you are to the class's "clearly gay kid" (to which the student dryly replied, "who told?") and the school's lone white student, who was just trying to get by unnoticed.

I've enjoyed most of this season of Rock, and even though the show lacks a major gay character, it has featured a number of minor gay characters (Will Arnett's Devon Banks, Jack's assistant Jonathan) and features gay-related humor in nearly every episode (there was another gay joke in the talk show segment of this episode regarding "fruit blindness" and another about bisexuality having been invented in the '90s to sell hair product) and it's almost always good-natured and funny.

What did you think of the ep, and the season overall? Is the Emmy darling leaving the season on a high note?

I laughed all the way through it!

The casting of Alan Alda as Jack's long-lost dad, leading to a subtle "M*A*S*H" in-joke, the fundraiser song, and Adam Levine's Borat imitation (not to mention his expressed desire to clock Elvis Costello) were all genius bits. I hope they do more with the "Clay is Kenneth's cousin" bit next season. Not to mention the whole "dealbreaker" business-especially when it winds up biting Liz on the ass.

Best Show Ever

I'm a hardcore 30 rock fan, so all my opinions may just be my subconscious's justification for loving the show.

The fake Tyra show with Liz giving rapid fire relationship advice was amazing. Also the very ending of the finale with the kidney song was great. 30 Rock did midnight train to Georgia last season and I laughed all the way through that song also.

While 30 rock may not have a gay character, the gay related humor/lines is more frequent than some shows who have an actual gay character(s). DSHW has 2 gay couples and their lines seem to be less frequent than 30 Rock's shout outs.

Hilarious

Clay Aiken as Kenneth's cousin is genius. He was a good sport and showed his sense of humor by combing his hair like Kenneth and poking fun at himself as if he rode the subway in with Elvis Costello.

The song was full of jokes, I had to rewind a few times to catch them all. Cyndi Lauper as one of the drunk ones was great. The whole episode was hilarious.

I love 30 Rock and thought

I love 30 Rock and thought this season ended on a funny note. Even though the show doesn't have a regular gay character, it seems (and I shudder to use the phrase) very post-gay in its treatment of homosexuality in humor, which is pretty awesome.

30 rock is always funny

I always love this show. It's sense of humour is kind of ridiculous, without the awful desperation of trying too hard. I thought Clay Aiken was funny. I like the idea of him being Kenneth's cousin because that was the first thing I thought of when I first saw Kenneth. It's a pity he only sang back up during the big medley. Whether or not you like his type of pop, Clay actually is a skilled vocalist.  But the other guest stars were more famous, so that's understandable.

I thought the comment about bisexuality being a made up thing was silly, though. I'm not bi, but have very close friends who are, and they are real peopl, not imaginary friends! I don't know, perhaps it was meant ironically to show how silly Liz was being.

brilliant finale

What can I say, I enjoyed it a great deal.

Not being American and not knowing Clay prior the show I'm really glad I saw it and therefore discovered this man - and his sense of humour . :o)

But I'm not sure  which part was the best, really. Cyndi all drunk out? Aw!

Well, I'm bi but I actually had to laugh at that. Wouldn't dream of taking it personally. ;o)

30 Rock

I like the show, and even though I was annoyed by the constant (as in almost every episode) stunt casting early in the season, I have to admit I really liked the all-star cast they assembled for the musical number at the end of this episode.

I'd just as soon see the "dealbreaker" bit disappear next year, good as it was in the last few eps.  One of the things I like about 30 Rock is that it doesn't run a joke into the ground like so many other shows do.  I love NPH, for example, but I could do with fewer constantly repeated catchphrases and more new material for him.  (Although I do think they've been leaning that way for the last half season or so.)

30 Rock

I've watched a few episodes and I've not been as impressed with the show as everyone else seems to be. I watched the finale and count me as one of those who thought the show pretty much was a bore. I didn't even smile once during the finale.

The few comedies I like have been cancelled for the most part. (Pushing Daisies, Earl). I've recently come across the CBS show Big Bang Theory and found it to be extremely funny.

NBC is losing more and more viewers with its programming decisions (Jay Leno, cancelling Earl, and Medium >>> Thank God For CBS ) Heroes is the only show I'm sure to watch next year. NBC is really earning the title of Nothing But Crap.
