News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Will the "As the World Turns" reality web series out-gay the actual show?

Not like that's really too hard, these days. But fans of Luke and Noah (and their real-life counterparts, Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann) and the mechanisms of daytime television might want to keep an eye on the web show InTurn, which awards one lucky aspiring soap star with a 13-week contract on As the World Turns. (Get it? In Turn?)

While it doesn't look like any of the four male contestants is openly gay (three of the guys mention girfriends or wives in their bios), the preview video suggests that they'll be asked to do a guy/guy love scene in one of the challenges, as screencapped above. (From what I can tell, that's Peyton on the left and Michael on the right.)

And Van and Jake are on-hand in some capacity (mentors? judges?), which is never a bad thing. Maybe they'll be there to share their tips on how to inject sexual innuendo into discussion of deli meats or use jumping on the bed like a sugarbombed third-grader as a metaphor for actual physical intimacy? We'll have to wait and see.

InTurn 3 (yes, this is the third season) premieres tomorrow, with new eps posted every Tuesday and Thursday.

Check out the video preview after the jump!

    Seriously. This brings

Seriously. This brings crack to a whole new level... That said, I am soooo watching this. Might be more entertaining that the show itself. Unless Nuke gets some unexpected action in the following weeks... I doubt that.

That said I'm rooting for the guy who's rolling his eyes in the promo. He's pretty.

    And clearly awesome.

    It's Entirely Possible....

That if the person picked is a guy that he might be brought for a triangle with the boys. I could see the show doing it during summer to get the kind of attention they got for the Luke/Noah romance last year. Van and Jake are featured prominently in the CBS ads for the show if that means anything. I would bet though that since soaps are written so far in advance the show goes into this with an idea of who they are looking for what role and hoping they find someone who fits.

    Exactly

Maybe those in the know realize the Ameera story just isn't working so they're going to try a different approach.  What they're allowed to kiss?

    cutaway again

They cut away from the male/male kiss in the preview, which isn't surprising. I think they will allow it in the actual episode, though, since it has a different audience demographic than the tv show. I am very curious how they will handle the pink elephant of having two guys kiss in preparation for a role on a tv show where guys in love apparently don't kiss each other.

    Just try kissing another man.

The two male interns are asked to kiss, because why? Not because one of them might be asked to play a gay role if they win. Obviously, no one's been watching the show for the last 9 months. Even if you're cast in a gay role, you aren't going to be asked to kiss. There's no real need to see  if the interns can do it. So ,that can't be the reason. I get it now maybe they have to kiss so that Jake and Van can stand off to one side and make "uga, uga" noises and shout, "See how hard that is, now you know how we felt."

Two men kissing, as we all know, has great comedic potential. It would also be strange if they are playing this straight, and Van and Jake are giving pointers. What the heck do they knowabout kissing another man? they've only done it twice. That makes you a trail blazer and  an expert, I guess.

    Oh, kissing another man...

...comes naturally to me! I was an expert the first time I did it!

    ATWT actors on InTurn

ATWT actors on InTurn are usually there to judge, rather than teach. They do sometimes give advice, but Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann would probably give advice on acting and soap stuff, rather than on how to kiss. If the contestants don't already know how to kiss, there's no point trying out for a soap.

But one thing I know is that Van and Jake would never say "See how hard that is, now you know how we felt," when talking about kissing a male. When interviewed, they've both spoken very respectfully of the storyline and the characters. I'm sure they care far too much about the fans to make light of it. I definitely do not believe either of them would go along with playing it for laughs.
