It's .... official? Adam Lambert: "No one should be surprised to hear I'm gay"
Rolling Stone has posted a sneak peek at the American Idol favorite's upcoming cover (due out Friday) and confirms what folks have been speculating for weeks: The singer comes proudly and unmistakably out as a gay man in his first major published interview. And okay, the cover isn't quite as iconic as the ones that we gently suggested last week, but hey ... it's pretty cool anyway. More details below... The preview of the article doesn't mention Lambert's rumored boyfriend Drake LaBry or say if the singer is single or taken. Lambert does note, "I'm proud of my sexuality ... I embrace it," but downplays his role-model status, stressing that first and foremost he's a singer.
Lambert with Drake LaBry He also mentions that he had a crush on Kris Allen (his roommate and the eventual winner) but he soon got over it when they became good friends. Huge ups to Lambert for speaking openly and candidly and without a whiff of hesitation or shame, and for playing the game so well since day one of the competition. I think he may have won some hearts and changed some minds in the process. RS also has exclusive behind-the-scenes video of the cover shoot and more goodies - be sure to check it out. I
Yeah
heh...
"confirms what folks have been speculating for weeks.."
^ speculating? hardly. more like "what folks have been pointing out for weeks"
well, at least it's out in every sense....too bad though, people are still gonna ask him about it over and over again for maybe the next 2 weeks or so.
2 weeks?
ah, yes...
you do have a point there. tsk.
i think people should just not answer the interviewer til they move on to a new question.
interviewer: so..you came out. how was that?
adam: *silence*
........
.........
interviewer: so, the new cd.....
'Bout time really...but I'm
'Bout time really...but I'm glad he's done it on his own terms.
Popeater has more details
He said some smart stuff
oh yeah
thank god he said he doesnt want to be a civil rights leader or whatever....i just bet someone will forget that and still call him out on not speaking out about rights, etc....
now we can go back and say "um, he never said he was going to do this..."
"I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit." -- I thought rolling stones was a celebrity magazine.
"The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we're gay. ... Why can't we talk about a human community?"
^ this sounds a little silly. i get what he's trying to say, but I assume we have the 'gay community' label because like every other group out there, we have our own issues, etc...and we need to....or we try to work together to get them accomplished. if it was just about being human, then being gay would not be an issue in the first place. not sure if that made sense, but whatever. :-P
"I thought rolling stones was a celebrity magazine."
I think you are misunderstanding these statements.
Perhaps you should just post the entire pre-view of the article in your post so folks who haven't gone over to the Rolling Stone and other sites can judge for themselves because I don't think you are doing his statements or him justice with the way you've presented them out of context.
LIZ QUOTE
"I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit." -- I thought rolling stones was a celebrity magazine."
Rolling Stone is primarily a magazine about Music and Musicians that's is focus. That was his point. Obviously many musicians are celebrities but the focus of Rolling Stone is supposed to be what's great, new, innovative or hot in music (not just who looks fat in a bikini or who's got a baby bump like some of the other mags)
Unlike People or Us Weekly or Ok a cover on Rolling Stone is still a big deal for a young musician.
That seems to me to be his intent in his saying the above.
LIZ QUOTE
"The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we're gay. ... Why can't we talk about a human community?"
The above was said in relation to his being compared CONSTANTLY with CLAY AIKEN. His point (which he goes on to state) is that just being gay doesn't make everyone think, act or believe the same things.
Being GAY is what makes us part of the GAY community because it is the ONE thing we have in common.
The goal IS to talk about the human community. Human rights, etc. That's why the Human Rights Commission uses the term "human", to remind people that gay rights are human rights.
NPH, TR Knight and a whole lot of men who get praised on this site have all said they don't want to be a "poster child" for LGBT.
No one person can be the spokesman for all LGBT folks because we are way too diverse for any one gay man to represent "the community"
But if you do the research you will see that like Cheyenne and Neil and others, Adam Lambert has done tons and tons of charity work for gay causes, etc. and he has certainly paid his "gay dues" and doesn't shy away from supporting gay rights.
He has contributed more than his fair share to supporting his gay community of which he's been a part and I'm sure he will continue to do so well into the future.
I already know he's not most A.E. readers' cup of tea musically or stylistically but I just don't think you are considering the overall spirit of the interview.
I think you are understanding many of these statements way too simplistically or literally or something, which doesn't really seem fair.
"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin) ** "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)
whoa there
I don't read Rolling Stones, but i know celebrities are in it....so ok, that was my fault. i didnt know it was 'just' a music magazine only.
I'm not some big adam fanatic, so i don't feel the need to research anything on him. I only picked a few quotes and said my view on them. i am not making anything less of who Adam is.
I think you are understanding many of these statements way too simplistically or literally or something, which doesn't really seem fair.
^ maybe i am understanding them wrong. sometimes things come off differently to different people. just because i read it in a different way, doesnt mean its fair or unfair. ok, i probably misunderstood. i tend to do that a lot. my bad. forgive me please. i won't ever do it again. shame on me
YAY!
We are so proud of you adam!
I didn't know he's gay?! *sarcasm*
First of all, being in a Kris/Adam fandom and all, the first thing I read was: "Kris is his type!" We, the Kradam fans, totally called that! It's real! This is freaking real! I cannot believe this! The two guys are just... unreal! I'm pretty sure Adam had told Kris about the fact that he thinks that Kris is cute and pretty and totally his type because they are open and honest with each other. But this is what makes it more cool, you guys! If indeed, Adam did tell Kris this prior to this interview and I wouldn't even be surprised if he told Kris minutes after they became roommates, it made what Kris and Adam had more incredible. I'm pretty sure many of you guys have seen the hugs that they gave each other, the looks, the "I love you". I don't think my Kradam-loving heart can take anymore adorable-ness from these two!
Secondly, I thought Rolling Stones is a little more "classy" than Hello Magazine or Us or People. In other words, Adam got class!
Lastly, the PopEater article makes me cry when Adam was quoted as saying: "Through it all, Lambert says he's "finally checked in to my self-worth for the first time in my life, and the fact that it has coincided with 'Idol' is so sweet." Sure, he still has his self doubts, but, as he put it, "for the most part, when I look in the mirror now, I finally see somebody who can do something cool.""
Oh Adam! I'm just speechless! I don't know if he knows it but he's a great person and a role model to many people out there especially young kids who are outcasted in school for being "different", whether it's skin colour, race, sexuality, physical appearances, etc. He is a role model to them and show them that you don't have to be afraid to be who you are. He, I'm sure, inspires many, including me. So, for that, thank you, Adam!
AND HE SEEMED SO BUTCH!!!!!!
trying to be a singer
"I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader." I respect him for that and how he has handled the whole issue in his own terms.
I expect RS to give credence to his music, where a "celebrity" magazine, (ie People, US), wouldn't.
The GLBT community is a microcosm of the larger human community in a way that ethic communities are not, I like to hear that fact referenced. He's not a spokesman, so I forgive him if he didn't say it the way I would have.
I expected this......
And I'm excited to see that he was honest, open and a no-bs kinda guy. You see a precursor to this sort of mindset in his post-idol interview with Michael Slezak. Funny, self-deprecating, practically always smiling – the genuine article.

To all the folks who are so pissed that he didn’t announce to the world, I think he’s made the most logical, business-savvy decision in doin’ his thang his way!!!
Love the pic...
...and I really love his...snake.
Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy.
It makes sense that Adam
Adam throws the chicks a bone.... per se
expanded quote:
“I liked it this season when girls went crazy for me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all hot. Just because I’m not sticking it in there doesn’t mean that I don’t find it beautiful. Lately there’s part of me that’s almost bi-curious the other way around. I’ve made out with girls at nightclubs when I had way too many drinks. I don’t know if it would ever happen, but I’m kind of interested."
Very, very media savvy that boy.
I LOVE YOU ADAM LAMBERT!!!!!
You are honest, real, open, fun, cute, sweet, humble, smart and realistic. You know what you want, you know who you are and you don't let anyone tell you what to say or how to act. A lot of people with that much confidence are also arrogant, but I have never ever gotten that attitude from you, and I respect you so much. I believe that you are what America, and the world, needs right now. Someone who is fearless, not scared of saying what's on their mind and who also is such a super talented all around charismatic guy. You are a great role model and I have loved you since day one, and my love has only gotten stronger for each week and each day.
Always be yourself and always know that people will love you for your music and your incredible talent first. Create good music and make people feel something, go tour all around the world and inspire people. You have inspired me in so many ways and I am forever grateful that you decided to audition for American idol. For the first time ever I wanna thank AI for being what it is, because without that show we would never have gotten to see you. Never gotten to know you and never gotten to love you. Also remember to not be to open about your personal life, you know people are gonna wanna know every single thing, but know that you have the right to be a little private too.
Because of you Adam, I now look at people differently. When I see people who look "weird" on the street, people who stands out from the rest, I no longer look at them and raise my eyebrows, I look at them and smile. I smile because I truly love that there are people in this world who aren't afraid to stand out. I love looking at people now, and those people inspire me. Because of all the beautiful things you have said I now understand that. You have made me see things differently, and look at life differently. I now smile everyday, and I have more fun.
It amazes me that one person who I've never met can have this much impact on my life, that has never happened before. I wished you were around when I was younger, I wish I had a role model like you when I was a teenager. But you are here now, and it's never to late.
Thank you Adam! I love you!
My kink is showing.
The Cover...
I think he looks kinda hot in that picture.
Glad he didn't wax.
He Kinda Looks Like...
a cross between Bryan Batt and Justin, the lead singer of Semi-Precious Weapons on that RS cover.
Then again,i think Lee Mead looks like a cross between Justin Timberlake and Adrien Grenier.
Just sayin....
I think the similarity with
"They put me with the cute
"They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight."
Sigh... the KRADAM slash fic department is gonna cook a storm over this. No..make that a tornado and a hurricane....
:D
I love him, but Duh
I love Adam to pieces and think he's beyond gorgeous, but really this story needs to filed under "Duh."
However, everyone might not be convinced he's gay. This video comes from youtube, and I'm not sure if it's a hidden cam recording or a comedy skit, but it's so bizarre it's hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FdnqONhGcE
There is a good collection ...
of videos/articles/photos on the RollingStone article found on this page. I loved how candid and honest Adam was - no tabloid can dig up any more dirt on him since he pretty much told all.
The different articles are just picking what they are quoting and most times, it's taken out of context. i.e. CNN went on about how Adam was advocating drug use (???), the headline in many an article was that Adam had a crush on Kris (???) - he just said that Kris was his "type" and the most attractive out of the group (like duh! have you seen the other guys - ain't for nothing Kris was called "hot by default").
i can't wait...
i can't wait to buy this magazine and Adam Lambert really really
ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p/s: BE TRUE YOURSELF AND YOU WILL HAPPY!!!!!!!
So now I guess he's going
So now I guess he's going to be up for "gay of the week" again? *rollseyes*
Please help my friend keep her child by going here. :)

He's not eligible...
Outtakes from the article are up at RS.com
They're not putting the article itself online, but there are several interesting bits that didn't make it into the final version available here, including these:
While he was doing the Ten Commandments musical:
On being out:
The cover looks amazing
The cover looks amazing, Adam looks amazing! I am so proud of him for coming out. Too bad the magazine is not available here in Norway, but.. Maybe I'll still get a hold of it somehow.
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

I send you something.

Thanks;)
I really appreciate this!

Drake Labry should get "Gay of the Week"
Snakes and butterflies...
Looking good on the cover, Adam Lambert...
I have read bits and pieces of this RS interview online and one thing is for sure - he does not hold much back... he opens up on everything from sex and drugs to his childhood, family, boyfriend, etc. Good strategy - because you know that it is a matter of time before everything from his past is dug up and aired out for all to see (we've already seen some it so far). If/when that happens in the future, he can just shrug and refer the shyte-stirrers to his RS interview.. no big deal. :)
Anyway, great RS cover. I love how they added the butterfly & the glittery green snake near the crotch. Real subtle. :p When I first saw this, I was looking around the pic for an apple but then *palm to forehead*, he already has an adam's apple, silly. lol.
Why is' THE GAY The Focus on RS Story Coverage?
Why isn't any of the Gay media writing about how badly this Rolling Stone article is being treated by other media outlets?
American Idol is just a platform, it doesn't reflect on the skills or talent or future success of Adam and he's clearly, clearly got skills up the wahzoo.
So many respected music professionals have indicated what a unique talent this guy is and STILL the only thing folks get from even the sneak peeks is that Adam is Gay?
The fact that the only thing the "media" seems to be talking about regarding this very in-depth, substantive, Rolling Stone article is the one thing that everyone already knew before the article was released (that Adam is gay) just speaks loads about how uncomfortable the US still is with sexuality and gay folks.
Even if they weren't satisfied with Adam's responses pre RS, they had Kris talking about Adam and his boyfriend being a "cool combinaton" and Kara saying emphatically that Adam has always been out.
Still they act like the point of the article was to come out?
Maybe 3 paragraphs in the whole RS article are actually about Adam being gay, the rest are about his life, his upbringing, his musical past and aspirations his philosophies, his goals, his influences, his experiences (what you would expect from a profile story).
He might as well have just had a 5 page photo spread and the words "I'm Gay" "I think Kris is cute" "I did shrooms at Burning Man" "Someday I might do it with a girl" as the captions given what the "media" has chosen to focus on.
People keep saying "Who cares that he's gay" "I already knew he was gay" and yet they can't stop talking about it. It's the only thing they want to talk about even after he's made it clear that yes DUH! he is gay. And then they blame him for not being "focused" on music? None of the people talking about the article are talking about his music situation.
No one is talking about the fact that he's collaborating with the musican Ferras or in meetings with other artists during this week (just like the other contestants), that like Kris, he's written a lot of songs previous to being on Idol (and performed them with his band). Interestingly both he and Kris have said they were unhappy with their early song writing.
It's crazy.
I'm really surprised at the Gay media in particular. Towleroad, Out.com/Popnography, etc.
Adam never said the article was supposed to be about him coming out because he was already out. He said he'd answer all the questions folks had about him. Was his being gay even a question at this point?
He also never said he had a crush on Kris he said he found him attractive and distracting when they first moved in together and folks are losing their minds about it. There is a difference between actively crushing/pining for a married man who is your roommate (sexual orientation not withstanding) and simply saying that they are attractive or you think they are sexy.
MTV and Extra called it a "shocking revelation". Anoop thought Megan was attractive and they were spotted drunk and flirting up a storm at some party during the competition. That seems a lot more "shocking" to me.
I've read the full article and it's about so much more than Adam being gay and it just seems so reductive and backwards that folks don't seem to want to write or talk about the incredible journey this young man had taken to get to Idol and beyond.
He's done tons of charity work in his community and given so much back.
He is a genuinely interesting and 3 dimensional person who is also a proud out gay man (FIERCELY SO) and I would have hoped that the non PHs of the world would be focusing on the full picture.
Maybe it's a generational thing, I don't know, but I'm very dissapointed in my fellow gays who claim we are so in need of young gay folks coming out and speaking out (which he did in the article about Prop 8) and yet we just act so smug and jaded and unsupportive if they don't tow the line the way we want.
I know people dismiss folks who like Adam as crazy fans or whatever but everyone has musicians and other kinds of artists who move them. I don't think his artistry and musical gifts (or the appreciation thereof) should be dismissed just because he may not be folks' cup of tea.
"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin) ** "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)
This interview (and the
This interview (and the outtakes) was even better than I expected. Adam just put everything out there, didn't he? He did say before that his closet was wide open and he has no secrets. Anything that the tabloids could have dug up is already out there now. Love it!
On a superficial note, the pictures are gorgeous. Also, how sweet that he called Drake "dreamy."
CNN says...
Lambert reveals "crush" on Idol winner
That's the headline CNN is
screamingreporting regarding the Rolling Stone article. I hope that's the headline Lambert was looking for. Gotta love the media. My question is whether the fickle gay fanbase will ultimately be turned off by his reluctance to be a role-model?
I didn't watch Idol. I'm sure he's a very good singer and/or performer. I don't see myself buying any music from this Idol contestant. I haven't bought music from any of the others. This will be fun to sit back and watch.
He already *IS* a role model
He already *IS* a role model, just by being who he is, having lived openly as a gay man for the last 8 years.
The media will always go for the sensational headline. It's a more titillating headline than "Adam Lambert thinks Kris Allen is cute".
Here... why don't you check out Adam's performances for yourself?
