Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays gay in FOX's upcoming "Do Not Disturb"
A slew of pilots have "leaked" to the Interwebs in recent weeks, and among them is the FOX pickup Do Not Disturb, which is scheduled for Wednesday nights starting this fall. The Upstairs/Downstairs-like sitcom stars Jerry O'Connell as the uptight playboy manager of a boutique NYC hotel ("Upstairs") and Niecy Nash (Reno: 911) as the more grounded manager of the reservations and housekeeping departments ("Downstairs"). Upstairs it's all leggy stick-figure models and handsome bellhops, but downstairs it's all chubby telephone operators, emotionally fragile Asian girls, and one bitchy queen, Larry, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (The Class). Larry's all about snips and easy double-entendres and tearing down both himself and his boyfriend (we don't meet him in the pilot, but he talks on the phone with him), who is an aspiring playwright. A few of the jokes are a bit too easy and play into the whole "gossipy self-loathing gay guy who lusts after anything with a hot bod (or even a big homeless package, in one of the groanier gags)" thing, but as this is a show that seems to make fun of just about everyone, it's more or less a level playing field with room for improvement for all. And Ferguson does have a scene-stealing quality that endears him far better than the rest of the supporting cast, most of whom I've already forgotten. Of course, things could of course change radically before the show makes it to air, but we'll be watching this one closely. Submitted by on Mon, 2008-06-30 10:14. |
