Matthew Mitcham and Joan Rivers join 300,000 for Sydney Gay Mardi Gras
On March 7 hundreds of thousands of gays and gay-adjacents took to the streets of Sydney, Australia for the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade, a celebration of the country's LGBT community since 1978. This year nearly 100,000 participated in the parade, which drew 300,000 spectators. Among the boldface names were out gold-medal-winning diver Matthew Mitcham and, for some reason, Joan Rivers. I hauled my pasty ass down to Sydney for Mardi Gras back in 2001 and it was seriously the most fun I've ever had outdoors in my entire life. Looking at these pictures takes me right back to Oxford Street ... although I might possibly just be having some sort of acid flashback. Enjoy!

Happiness
You know, everytime I see a picture of Matthew, he just looks genuinely happy - a simple kind of joy with life I think we ought to all strive for. There's nothing staged or fake looking about his smile. Just a young man happy with his life. We need more people like that in the world, gay or straight. How he's not endorsing every product known to man based on that alone, I'll never understand. The Telstra contract isn't to be sneered at - that's major down under, but his general comfort level with life puts him head and shoulders above say, Phelps (pre-bong). Happy people can make me buy things, regardless of their orientation.
Here's hoping Joan's appearance doesn't get worked into Celebrity Apprentice - my eyes, it burns!
You took the words right out of my keypad!
His happiness makes me happy. And I'm sure that's true for everyone else.
I'll never forget his big Olympic dive, how surprised and joyous he was -- and most important of all his graciousness and sportsmanship. He immediately saluted the divers who lost to him -- bringing them right up on the platform himself. They were quite dazed at the time too.
Matt's a treasure for a million reasons. He's the instant answer to all the crap that's thrown at us 24/7.
I was at Mardis Gras but
