Johnny Weir in fourth place at Worlds

Johnny Weir -- who in recent months has been the target of some gay-related slurs from other members of the skating community -- is in fourth place at the World Figure Skating Championships. This placement stands after today's short program, which placed French skater Brian Joubert in the lead.

Weir could still take home a medal, depending on his performance in tomorrow's free skate. In speaking about his performance today (in which he stumbled on a triple-flip), he said:

"This wasn't as crummy as it could have been ... I knew Joubert had skated great and posted a high number. I wanted to keep the [energy] level in the building up."

We're rooting for Weir -- considering that he's never placed higher than fourth at Worlds, this could end up being a good year for him if he turns it out in tomorrow's program. We'll be back with the final results on Thursday!

Johnny Weir: The Divine Ice Diva

Brian, thanks for keeping us posted about JW.

He's not having a great year - but - I hope he places well.

    I like the kid.

I have a feeling that he will be have a great future working in the media when he retires from skating.
