News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Join us now for the "Make Me a Supermodel" liveblog!

You may recall that last year we liveblogged the freshman season of Bravo's Make Me a Supermodel, and rallied the troops in support of house gay Ronnie Kroell. As the show uses a live voting feature similar to American Idol, we would like to think that our Save Ronnie! campaigns had at least something to do with Kroell staying in the house until the very end.

So this season we're be to carry the torch for the season's two gay contestants, Shawn and Chris. We'll be implementing the insanely interactive liveblogging technology that we used for the Oscars last week, so you as readers and commenters will be an integral part of the fun.

So follow the action below, and join in the instant-commenting and real-time polling fun in the box below the liveblog (and refresh often for updates!)

10:00PM EST - And away we go ...

10:05PM EST - Love the opening, which features the models as fifty-foot tall giants among the streets in NYC, but The Rolling Stones and Belinda Carlisle did it better. We barely have time to meet the models before they're introduced to Tyson and new "mentor" Nicole, who is introduced in a giant transparent cube like a David Blaine trophy.

10:10PM EST - The show just started and we already have our first gay panic attack, from "definitely straight" Brenden, who doesn't want to be teamed up with "definitely gay" Chris. Get over yourself, kid. You ain't all that. What's worse for Brenden is that he and Chris are going to be in close quarters wearing sexy clothes. Bwa-ha-ha!

10:20PM EST - Amazingly, Brenden is able to make it through the shoot, even though he was close to "teh gey". Shawn has an easier time with his partner Karin.

10:25PM EST - Nicole, who acts like she hardly gives two sh**s about this whole thing, announces that one winner will be chosen for this first challenge, and that person will win a "go-see", and will get a chance to audition for a very important client.

10:30PM EST - And the winner of the challenge is Salome, who everyone instantly hates. She goes to meet her client, but flops on the runway, so she shall now be known as Salome's Last Dance.

10:35PM EST - Only halfway through the first show, and we already get Underwear! My new favorite is the husky hunk Ken, who was rocking tiny briefs.

10:40PM EST - I also like nerdilicious Colin, who I think can be counted on to give us lots of awkwardly adorable moments.

10:50PM EST - It's catwalk time, which will decide who gets eliminated. Everyone does their sashay, and then face the judges, who include Marlon and Perou, and someone without a laughable name, Jenny Shimizu. The judges also include Catherine Malandrino, "fashion icon" and dead ringer for 70's b-movie star Barbara Steele.

Half of the models are told that they're safe, including Shawn, but Chris is among the half that are either among the best or worst of the week.

It's quickly made clear that the judges hate Chris, especially the hateful "Perou", who calls him "Christine", and says he "needed a handbag on his catwalk". Harsh words from a man dressed like a reject from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

10:55PM EST - It figures that the bottom three are my faves Colin, Chris, and Ken. The judges decide, and Ken is kicked to the curb, which means we'll never witness those awesome thunder-thighs again. Damn!

Well, at least our gays Chris and Shawn are through to the second round, but Chris is barely hanging on.

That's it for week one. What did you think? Will Brenden learn a life lesson, and give us a bromance with Shawn or Chris? Probably not. Will Salome's Last Dance continue to irritate everyone? And can season two possibly live up to season one?

I have to say that I'll be

I have to say that I'll be watching, but ditching the audience voting makes this definitely not "must see" -- in other words, it's just like "Top Chef" -- not vital. Last year I was sweating bullets every Thursday to see what happened to Ronnie. That element is totally gone now. Not an improvement, Bravo. That also makes the need for a Live Blog beside the point.

    Ehn

I didn't watch Supermodel last year and I can't say I was too impressed with this first episode.  I don't really think any of them are all that attractive.  But in general I don't find models attractive anyway.   I don't particularly like Chris and haven't seen enough of Shawn. At this point I can't say I'm routing for any of them.

    Season 2 changes sorta suck

    To wit:

Live voting was the element that made the first season must-see. You had to watch on Wednesday in order to save your favorite. Eliminating the live voting makes Make Me A Supermodel just another reality competition with suspect judging and producer-engineering.

Nicole's going to have to step up her game as a "mentor." She seemed to be in another, sorta boring show tonight. Is this the best former model they could find to host the show?

4 judges, plus the 2 mentors responding to the final catwalk feels like too many personalities, too many opinions. It was a blur of weird costumes and accents for me.

Did Bravo tip us off to these changes before the premiere? And is Bravo pretending that these are good changes -- or improvements?

    Unpleasant surprises.

Please don't make me feel guilty that Chris is barely hanging on.  He's surely belongs on the bottom of the list (disregard the implication).  I'm not crazy about any of the girls so far, and I do like Collin.  For my tastes, the English dude is the most appealing.  The 18 y.o. straight guy?  His personality detracts from his looks.

I watched the reruns earlier yesterday of the first season.  The one where the photographer (insert the single silliest name you can think of...) teamed Ben and Ronnie, now that was hot.  Last night, not so much.  (By the way, I doubt that it was Ho Mo Phobia's first gay shoot--in that last night was barely a shoot and certainly not gay.)

Other than that, I agree that the "improvements" are not all that positive and further proof that Bravo has a network death wish.

Season 1 was much more fun...and gay

     A few questions and comment.

    1. What happened to the mandatory skintight black unitards the boys had to wear from last season? Would've LOVED to seen Ken in one of those before he (and his HOT ass) got the boot.

    2. Do we not get to vote anymore?

    3. Tatou is the perfect kind of douche who could NEVER exist anywhere but in the fashion industry.

    4. More homoerotic shoots, a'la season 1!

I'll keep watching but so far, so boring.

    The first episode

I liked the first episode of the second season.

The first challenge was hard, and the people this season seems interesting.

I can't remember who said it, but I agree with the fact that the guys this season seems better than the girls. They are more model material IMO.

Can't wait for next episode! I'll definitely be watching, though nothing will ever beat last year's Bronnie.
