Lance Bass on The View

Lance Bass appeared on The View this morning to promote his new book Out of Sync, and came across as a very balanced, well-spoken, and pleasant young gay fella.

The chat also gave Whoopi the opportunity to weigh in on the whole "God isn't cool with the gays" argument (she thinks He or She is just fine with them), which was then echoed by Sherri Shepherd, who noted, "Jesus loves you, baby" at the end of the interview. Now, given the whole "flat Earth" situation that went down not too long ago, I'd imagine Sherri would probably agree with Whoopi if she told her that the Pope was a Belgian waffle ... but it still seemed a genuine gesture.

The whole clip's after the jump -- enjoy!

    Lanced

"I think God is good with you, baby."  That is what Whoopi said.  She rarely speaks when interviewing people but when she does she always is the most positive.

Sherri and Elisabeth are like many anti-gay people, they are nice to you to your face, but think poorly of you behind your back.  As I mentioned a week ago, Sherri had gay friends and accidently sent a marriage ban petition to one of them.  Elisabeth compared gay relationships to toasters only a couple months before Rosie became co-host.  She was really nice to Rosie and subverted her anti-gay opinions for the first couple months.

Nice interview, he should sell some books because of it

When Lance first came out of the closet I couldn’t stand him. His whole “I’m gay but I’m a straight-acting gay (aka SAG)” line never sat well with me. Plus his whole “I hope the gay community isn’t expecting me to be a leader, they’ll be disappointed” set a very negative tone for his association with the gay community. Nobody expected him to be a leader, just himself. Which in this case maybe he was just being himself…a self-centered ass. People would say “Give him time, he’s just coming out” but as his book has proven he knew for a long time he was gay. He had already been out to his friends and some family...he was still worried about his image as "not that kinda gay" in the public eye.

I liked his interview here. However, I wish I could give him the benefit of the doubt but I can’t...he’s selling a product -- his book. I hope Lance has a very successful career, I hope he’s a happy person, I hope that I’m totally wrong and this isn’t him taking a page from Reichen’s sales book and he’s actually growing.

My friend has a copy of the book and as soon as he finishes it he's gonna let me read it. I'm looking forward to it.

    Nice saves...

...by Whoopy on the "mom" issue, he seemed a little taken back; and on JT. A good interview for him.

    It will be fascinating

to see how Lance Bass evolves as an out gay person.  I agree with GayTVLuver that Lance Bass got off to a bad start with the "straight-acting gay" comment, mind you that is an attitude I often seen in young gay men who are just out in the community.  The "I am not one of them" attitude is very prevalent and only disappears with more exposure and interaction with less butch members of the gay community.

    Cheers
