Liveblogging "As the World Turns": Yes, Virgin, There Is a Santa Claus

With Christmas looming on the horizon like the silhouette of some enormous, mythic beast hungry and lumbering in our direction, the Whos of Whodale prepare for the holiday by scheming, lying, murdering, making bad decisions and being generally selfish and shallow ... all while surrounded by twinkly lights and garland. It's a beautiful thing.

And it looks like the Christmas spirit is working its charms on estranged gay lovers Luke and Noah, who are brought together to reminisce about the good old days when they didn't have sex and were tortured by the fact (as opposed to now when they don't have sex and aren't really bothered by it). Not to mention last Christmas, when they didn't kiss under the mistletoe. Ahhh, good times...

So will Santa bring Luke and Noah back together ... or will he just bring them a lump of coal? Click on through the jump and refresh often to find out ... as it happens!

Slice up the fruitcake!

2:55PM EST: Lady D tells Wheats that she feels irrelevant when her husband rejects her and he tells her that he has needs too, to which she squawks, "Gay- Great! Let's take care of them!" Paging Dr. Freud!

He convinces her that they should just cuddle. Oh, Lady D...

Luke tells Noah that he's jealous of Maddie because she's gotten further with Noah than he has. Noah assures him that he only has feelings for Luke and after another passionate kiss asks, "do you believe me?" Uh, I'm workin' on it.

And Alli gets a text message from either Gossip Girl ... or Lucy!

Preview Time!: Okay first, The Man from Oakdale is really being released as a book. I bet the pages will be pepperkakor-scented! Tomorrow Luke walks in on Noah and Maddie having coffee together, which for Noah is of course almost third base. We'll be back to hold your hand through all the overcaffeinated drama!

2:49PM EST: Henry explains that he wrote The Man from Oakdale when Cafe Vienna left him and recites the dedication to her. She drags him up to their room to play "sexy editor and naughty naughty writer". I fear for his dangling participles!

Meanwhile Lady D makes Wheats take her up to his hotel room, giving him ample time to pop a Viagra, Dramamine and Ambien and to mentally pull up all of his favorite Zac Efron pics.

Noah invites Maddie to Metro for New Years, where Henry's throwing a party for the holidays, and when she leaves Noah says he can't believe she's back home. Luke concurs.

OMG, Lady D just literally dove for Wheats' belt! He stops her from depantsing him and says "you don't want to do this."

Luke tells Noah that he's upset that Noah invited Maddie along with them on New Years and Noah's all, "you can't actually be jealous of her ... can you?" That's a good Bingo, Noah.

2:40PM EST: Maddie hugs the boys and tells them it's great to see them and she asks Noah point-blank, "So you're really GAY?!" It's kind of funny. She tells them that Butters wasn't all about seeing her. Meanwhile, Butters tells Alli that he has to get over Maddie.

Meanwhile Henry tells Cafe Vienna that he's already sold the book to Simon & Schuster and Lady Drumstick is pissed off at the fact and even threatens to sue Henry for defamation of character. HA!

Back in the alley Luke impatiently waits as Noah and Maddie catch up. She's still carrying a torch for Butters and Luke hastens to make it clear that Butters is still single. Noah tells her that it's worth it to hold out for Mister Right, gazing over her head at Luke as he says it.

Alli tries to out-loser Butters by saying that she slept with one man the day before she married another and Butters cracks that yeah, he probably won't be doing the same. Ha!

2:30PM EST: Luke and Noah walk through Oldtown (in Maddie Alley, appropriately enough) and they reminisce about "last Christmas ... remember how close we were?" ... to kissing on-screen?

Luke invites Noah to the farm for Christmas and he accepts. And then he pulls the box out of his pocket and tells Luke he wants to give it to him.

Lady Drumstick likes Henry's book but isn't really all about publishing the story but Wheats thinks it's a bad idea. But she goes for it anyway and Cafe Vienna runs off to find Henry to tell him the good news.

Meanwhile, Henry's not having a drink with the somewhat creepy lady who crashed Al's earlier, who gives him a check for his "contributions". Of course Cafe Vienna shows up and tells him about the good news that Lady D is publishing the book and creepy lady is all "oh hellllllllll no!"

Is it just me or did Butters color his hair in between leaving the house and arriving at work?

Luke opens the box and it's ... a watch. Hey, I hope it's a Consummation Countdown Watch! On the back Noah has inscribed "Worth the Wait". Mmm-hmm. Noah helps him put it on and their eyes lock. Noah looks up and sees the mistletoe and they remember last year under the mistletoe and Luke tells Noah that he's still so in love with him and Noah says "Same here" like he did last year, and they kiss. Passionately, even!

But their kiss is broken when Noah sees the ghost of Maddie haunting the alley a few feet away. He shouts "Maddie!" and you could seriously knock Luke over with a feather.

2:18PM EST: Luke, with an expression straddling "amused" and "nauseous", apologizes for walking in on Peepaw and Meemaw playing tonsil-hockey. Wheats tries to smooth it over and when Lady D is out of earshot Luke tells Wheats again that he's not being fair to her, even if she does seem happy.

All of a sudden Lady D starts yelling "what what no blood, no corpse!", so either she's making a joke about the fact that there's alarmingly little drama going on in the house or her pent-up sexual frustrations have graduated to a full-on stroke. Ask her if she smells toast!

Noah shows up with presents for the gang ... and he's holding on to one small box, nervously. Luke tells him that Wheats admitted to coming on to him.

Lady D derails the trip to the museum by taking Wheats to the only available set that would make any sense for them to end up in, the boardroom. She tells Wheats that she loves boardrooms and starts raping him again. Go lady business! But before they get too far Cafe Vienna shows up with Henry's manuscript, which she wants her to publish. Wheats points out that the book is about Lady D hiring to PIs to find Lucy and Johnny.

Back at the Pad, Luke fills in Noah on the Jade situation and how he got her arrested and everything. Noah tells him that he did the right thing, the kind of thing that the guy he fell in love with would do.

Noah tells him awkwardly that he has the day off and asks if he wants to hang out. And meanwhile Butters Maddie Alli meow meow meow.

Flagellant in three languages! HA! Gets me every time, that one...

2:06PM EST: We start off with General Foods International Coffees Cafe Vienna coming home with a heap of presents, and while stuffing one under the smallest tree ever she stumbles upon a screenplay hidden under the table.

Over at Al's, Henry is already saying "pepperkakor". Glad we got that out of the way!

At his place, Butters is making a sandwich and NuMaddie arrives. She makes a crack about him not remembering her, which is entirely possible considering that she's played by a different actress than she was when she left Oakdale.

At the Lily Pad, Lady Drumstick is literally sitting in the living room holding mistletoe over herself, begging her gay husband to kiss her. Oh the indignity. When Brian "Wheatables" Wheatley eventually shows up and she complains about not being able to do anything anymore he of course suggests that they work off her pent-up energy by ... going to the museum! Wait, did he just call her "old"?

She relents and tries to devour his face again, and Luke comes in the front door just in time to see them kissing.

Umm.... What?

Maddie has family in Oakdale.   She hasn't seen Casey in years since before he went to jail.  Going to see him first is completly ridiculous.

It's so weird having these two characters pretend to have all this history when they are played by two totally different actors.

Oh The Magical Hold Of The First Love

Aww Anthony, have a heart.

It's romantic..

Casey is her one true love who broker her heart so bad it sent her whirling head-first into rebound land with soon-to-be-gay Noah.

Remember what Maddie said to Vienna and Gwen, Casey was supposed to be her "happy ending" (that's right, i said it)

They were planning their lives together. Girl was sprung. Now she needs her confrontation.

You don't get over you first big teenaged love in a mere two years. PISHAW

Casey's got some splaining to do.

I loved Casey and Emily but if he's going to get with anyone else, it should definitely be Maddie (whomever is playing her) and not Allison

I'm almost as excited a this pairing as I am about NUKE because I never got to see Casey and Maddie on screen together.

I Do Have A Heart....

.... I'm a big romantic, but this is just stupid.  You don't show up on the doorstep of someone you haven't seen in over 2 years and say 'hey, I still love you, let's get back together'.  So dumb.

The fact that the actors are totally different (and the girl playing Maddie cannot act) doesn't help.

Luke's nasty glares are fun though!

Guillermo Serritiello's picture

And let's not forget that she was Luke's best friend

and they patched things up after Noah-gate, so it kind of sucks that the writers (who in many ways are doing a better job than they have in a while) did not have "Maddie" (or rather Danielle Brisebois 2.0 from Archie's Place) not engage Luke first and kind of blow off Noah a little as it would still allow for where they are taking this.

Huh?

When did Noah start believing Luke about Brian?  How can these writers just ignore the fact that Noah has been very cold towards Luke, and hasn't been listening to what he has to say.
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Yep......

The actor who plays Casey did a guest stint on Law and Order where he had to bleach his hair.  That's why his hair magically changed colors.

Maddie

K Wasn't Maddie and Luke like best buds before she went to college?  shouldn't he be happy to see her than jealous?  Looks like they are totally rewriting that history.

Anthony D. Langford's picture

I'd Rather.....

I'd really rather Luke be drunk if he's going to act this foolish.  For once, I'm on Noah's side!
HenryZ's picture

Those were some nice

Those were some nice kisses. I felt embarrassed for Luke having to spell out for Noah that he wants to have sex. God, does he need diagrams and a chalk board? Should he be wearing some mistletoe on his belt buckle? What will it take to get the message across?

Anthony D. Langford's picture

Kisses...

.... the kisses were great.  Very sweet and passionate.  But yeah, why does Luke have to draw a picture saying he wants to hook up?  Sometimes Noah is sooooo clueless.  Luke should just grab Noah's belt buckle like Lucinda did with Brian.  I'll bet Noah just won't want to cuddle!  LOL!

Luke's jealousy didn't make

Luke's jealousy didn't make sense, especially since the previously hostile Noah had just been kissing him, and before that, he was listening to him and being understanding.  Of course the whole thing is plot driven, so it's not a surprise that it doesn't make sense.
Anthony D. Langford's picture

As I Said Before..

.... Luke being jealous is stupid.  He has NO reason to doubt Noah.  Clearly Noah is totally into him and Maddie is just a friend.  This is just bad writing.  And him seeing them in Java and then running out?  That's so high school!
HenryZ's picture

Didn't Noah once see Luke

Didn't Noah once see Luke and Reg having coffee and then run away? Maybe in Oakdale, having coffee and a danish is symbolic of carnal knowledge...

LUKE IS A BIG WHINEY BABY I still adore hime but "Shakes Fists"

Did it ever occur to Young Master Luke that he might have gotten some play a lot earlier from Noah if he hadn't insisted, INSISTED, that they live on HIS grandmother's farm with all the antiquate rules about who's allowed to have sex.

Or if he's shown some flexibility (such as staying at Noah and Ameera's place) or some backbone (kicking BRIAN out of his mushroom camping tent)

Luke's mother owns a lovely hotel, Luke could have snatched Noah up the second Noah came back early from Italy to be with him instead of INSISTING on going to that ridiculous meeting at Metro.

Luke has had a cajillion opportunites to just move into an apartment with Noah where they could have at it away from the prying eyes of children, parents, grandparents or horses.

NOW he's get's an attitude about Noah having slept with Maddie 16 months ago?

PUUUULEEEASE!

Luke only figured out This Fall that he had other places to live besides THE FARM.

Personally I think Luke has ALWAYS been afraid to be alone with Noah (and his horrible girl sex cooties) and has used every excuse in the book to keep them from being alone together.

I find Lukes pinning the no sex having on Noah to be ridiculous.

From Luke's "sexless relationshio" talk with Brian to Luke's bizarre "my dad's a cheating whore, why haven't you ravished me on the kitchen table Noah" outburst, Luke never takes responsibility for anything.

Being a virgin and being scared and jealously does not mean you get to manipulate someone or guilt trip someone into sleeping with you

Particularly as it is unnecessary because Noah has tried to put the moves on Luke and gotten shot down more times than I can count.

I have never been more compelled to SLAP a fictional character across the face that I am right now with Luke Snyder.

If Noah had been manwhoring it all overOakdale with anything that moves, then I could get where Luke was coming from.

Seems to me they have both been stuck in fear of first time gay virgin mode because they can't imagine doing it with anyone else and haven't been able to get out of their own ways to do it together.

LUKE IS ON MY LIST!

Peroxide

It is obvious that Casey mops the floors with a very strong concentration of peroxide, and the fumes bleached his hair.  Duh!

And yes, the writing today is almost as bad as the acting by the Simon/Schuster editor (was that a real editor or just a relation to Goutman or one of the other PTB?)

AND LET'S NOT FORGET...

And let's not forget, which the writers have conveniently forgotten or not, that the reason Noah broke up with Luke was because he felt, with extraordinarily good reason, that Luke had issues with Kevin to deal with before he & Noah could get back together.

Well, it looks like all that is forgotten not to mention that Maddy was Luke's best friend too - even when she was hot after Noah, Luke felt 4 Maddy.  And now, all of a sudden, Maddy doesn't hardly even speak to Luke who was her best friend and even her savior from marrying the "gay" (presumably, we don't really know yet) Noah!  And when did Maddy forgive Noah.  Remember, hey, writers, we do have brains & memories, Maddy was being VERY unforgiving to Noah when she left and now, all of a sudden, they're back in the sack (figuratively of course) again?  I mean really!  Give me a break, writers.  Let's try to keep our S/L's somewhat  believable.

It's all too hilarious - the writers really do need to use a story board so they can keep from falling over themselves with the totally unbelievable dialog.

Cadence's picture

Maddie is just a plot

Maddie is just a plot device, she's just there to set-up whatever will happen on Tuesday.  I really don't understand why it's so hard for ATWT writers to come up with stories that don't contradict storylines that they themselves wrote just last month.  I can see if they were changing story lines that happened years ago, I wouldn't like it but it wouldn't be so bad, but this is just crazy.
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Yep....

..... Maddie is simply a plot device to create drama for Luke and Noah and has already been stated, inadvertantly ruin their NYE.  It even really isn't about Casey, even though she supposedly came back 'for' him.  But hey, the guys got.... what 3 seconds of happiness before the next drama?

The real problem is what it always is, the show has short term memory.  Luke and Noah broke up because of the election and Luke's obcession with Kevin.  That's what Noah said at the time.  But rather than address that, they're pretending it didn't happen and doing a quick reunion (remember, Luke and Noah were fighting and Noah said he couldn't even *think* of getting back with Luke only a week or so ago) so they can hurry on to the next plot point: whatever goes down between Luke and Brian on NYE during Luke's next jealous, drunken fit.

Will they even mention the election or Kevin.... or will Luke just suddenly go back to school as the fraudulent election never happened?   That's why this show drives me nuts.  I enjoyed today's episode, but when you look at the bigger picture, you can see that is sloppily handled and thrown together without much thought.

But is it really nice to

But is it really nice to call Maddie a tool?  Despite the fact most everyone else in Oakdale can be tools a good deal of the time.

Noah started to believe at Jack's bachelor party

Noah started to believe when he saw how Brian was trying too hard with the stripper.  He has also had a few more days to think about missing Luke.  I don't see Noah and Luke as being so at odds as you do.
jai's picture

Loved the episode!

Overall I just want to say I loved this episode, I thought the scenes were extremely well-written.  I loved how Luke felt comfortable talking to Noah about Jade and Brian.  Just talking to Noah as good friends and then that leading to discussion of where they had been and how they both still love each other.  It was so relatable.  And the kisses were hot.

Yes Luke is in the wrong being jealous of Maddie, but I can also see why he would be ... Is it really so hard to believe?  Yes Noah and Maddie are just friends, but even in a normal relationship that isn't struggligng to get back to where it was, the people seeing each other can be jealous of the friends of the other when the other spends time with their friends.  Luke is still happy to see Maddie, but he needs the time to talk things out with and spend with Noah right now.  But what does Noah do?  Run straight to Maddie and practically ignore Luke as soon as he sees her.  I definitely remember Luke feeling like the odd one out in Noah and Maddie's talk about movies back in the day ... This is not new and this is not bad writing.

Zam's picture

Good Writing/Bad Writing

Yup, Maddie certainly didn't leave on good terms with either Luke or Noah.  I think Luke's jealousy is founded in this case (despite being silly) after Noah broke the kiss only to say "Maddie!"  The business with coffee in the previews seems as though, as usual, the writers are overplaying it.

Luke and Noah had great sweets 1-on-1 scenes today.

Pretty damn implausible that Casey would be her first visit...with a suitcase.  Unless she was using it to ride around town.

Once Lucinda is back to 100% health, Brian better watch out.  She's not a stupid woman, and if rumors of her ruthless past are to be believed, he probably won't have to worry about whether or not he's really gay (or whatever).

Oakdale is becoming creepy yet kind of addictive....

Maybe it's because I am kind of watching it on and off, but I got some warm and fuzzy vibes watching Luke and Noah kiss, could not keep my eyes off Casey's copper hair and odd little side-burns, actually enjoyed seeing Alison and Casey engaging in dialogue that actually sounded like two would-be friends (or more) enjoying one another's company, and now to the creepy, which is of equal enjoyment.

Lucinda all horned up, pulling on that belt, and I am not sure if any one else caught it, but she either pulled a classic Hubbard as she had a line in the hotel room that was supposed to start with the word "great" and she said "gay" followed by "great. Oops, no second takes in the new economy. Go Hubbard!

All that belt pulling is so out there as not even Henry and Vienna's blend of Hannah Montana innocence meets hard-core porn is so in your face. I am fearing that Brian may have more than one secret. Maybe a daytime Crying Game. Could Brian now be more Jenny than Greg under the suit???

And we are back to those stairway scenes. I kept thinking that Dr. Death was going to be back and we could revisit the zombies that overtook the hospital a while back. The lighting and shabby uniforms gave Ali and Casey this cinema verite (fancy for cheap) vibe that has horror flick all over it. I am envisioning loony Paul choking Ali and having heads explode as her perfectly manicured mom is having heartfelt dialogue with her new grandbaby (not stolen or switched yet) and Lucinda is starting her second round of chemo, but the machine takes a life of its own.......

Maybe it's because the holidays are here, but I am liking hearing sappy dialogue and creepy crawlers even though there is no continuity to speak of. Head writer Passanante confirmed that she's all about creating stand alone episodes, and as much as I hate that as daytime drama is the antithesis of stand-alone, there is room for both. She has been consistent in keeping Brian's zipper up from lusty Lucinda over a few episodes....

Brian awesome v-log (as usual). More!!!!
