Liveblogging Isaiah Washington on Star Jones
After Friday's liveblog of the history-making kiss on As the World Turns (and today's episode was pretty interesting ... more on that later), I thought I'd give a play-by-play of what is sure to be one of the most disastrous television moments of the year, Isaiah Washington on the newly-minted Star Jones talk show. The real challenge here will be getting through the liveblog without taking any potshots at Star's appearance (or what's left of it, seeing as she apparently left half of her body weight in a hazmat bin at a local plastic surgeon's over the last few months) or the frequent rumors about her husband's sexuality and focusing on the main event. I'll do my best. Really, I'm only doing this because Washington has yet again said he's going to lay it all on the line, and for some reason the twin-disaster combination of he and Jones might actually lead to something. Which means I'll have to write about it anyway, so may as well get it out of the way. The conclusion: Nothing new, and the show overall is a complete and utter waste of time and space (luckily, the set is about the size of a Manhattan bathroom, so it's not that big of a deal). The Washington interview was pre-recorded and is clearly an attempt to rehabilitate his public image, not an attempt to get to any truth behind what happened. Court TV should be ashamed of themselves. You can watch the interview segment over here. For the blow-by-blow, click on through! 3:59 PM EDT: Alright, this is lame. Although Star Jones is live, the Washington interview was pre-recorded, so obviously nothing interesting is going to come out in this discussion. They've just wasted 30 seconds on a football analogy. What's next, Star asking what kind of tree he is? Was he "blindsided?" Isaiah thinks and says that without revising history, he can't say he was blindsided but says that there were things he saw that he had seen before and that he had been naive. Of course, he's refusing to discuss what actually happened, still, so he's just talking in circles. He says Peter Boyle warned him of working on an ensemble show, saying that he'd be nudged out for political reasons eventually. Now Isaiah finds it harder to trust people, but he still tries to be open and give people chances. PTHHHH. Star notes that Washington is returning to TV "unscathed", but does note that the "D word" is attached to him frequently. I'm scrambling in my latest hatespeech leaflet to figure out what that one is .. what, people call him a "dyke"? No, it's just "difficult". Whew! And that's the end of it: Washington's reputation has been redeemed for the seven people willing to ignore the last six months and Star got her press for playing footsie with someone with a little heat behind him. T.R. Knight wasn't even mentioned once, which indicates that Washington has now managed to transform the event of calling a co-worker a hateful term in front of your colleagues fully and completely about him. Star returns for her "open letter" segment, which allows her to talk directly to us about a topic she finds interesting ... unlike the previous 54 minutes, where she talked directly to us about things she finds interesting. Today's topic is 'second chances'. She wishes Washington well on his second chance, then randomly calls out Don Imus for getting off easy for his similar use of a hateful word, saying he should know the difference between a rap lyric and a real person. This is such a distortion of logic that I'm shocked that her closet-sized set doesn't fold in on itself like an origami swan. Let's move on. 3:46 PM EDT: Star introduces Isaiah as a "poster child and whipping boy for bad behavior and inappropriate language." Washington says that he hopes that people stop using these bad words in the future so that he didn't go through all this for nothing. Yeah, me too -- hate to think he's been inconvenienced for calling someone a faggot! Washington's mother was the first African-American woman in Texas to get a barber's license, and his father was murdered when he was 13 and he learned about it on television and had it confirmed by his mother and stepfather. That is certainly nothing to make light of. After the break, more on the "alleged behind-the-scenes scuffle" with Patrick Dempsey and "public use of the F-word." How utterly thrill- OH! That commercial where the cat has to hire a bloodhound to find his litterbox because there's no odor! I love that one. 3:38 PM EDT: Star has moved on and is now chatting about the new reality show Kid Nation with two psychologists (this is the show that is essentially Lord of the Flies as a reality show). The woman looks like she used some projects with extra Joker in them this morning, but otherwise seems nice enough, as does the handsome young guy in the suit. Apparently one 11-year-old burned her face with grease on the show, while another drank bleach. Sheesh. And here I thought Sunny D was the worst thing kids were drinking these days! Alright, I'm really sick of listening to Star opine about things. Okay -- she's plugging Isaiah again. This had better amount to something or I'm sending Court TV a bill. 3:30 PM EDT: In a discussion of scandals in the sports arena, the lady from Extra (they really need captions for these people so we know who the heck they are) says that being in the public eye doesn't make you a role model. She then goes on to indirectly compare sports heroes to subjects on To Catch a Predator. Geraldo yells "bring out the 11-year-old!" in jest, but it still creeps me out to no end. They discuss a Russian holiday being created by the government in order to encourage couples to have sex in order to boost the flagging population, which includes prize incentives like appliances and money for those that get busy. The Extra lady suggests that the American government pay some people NOT to have children. I unfortunately don't think she's talking about Star. 3:18 PM EDT: More blabby-blab about Britney, Lindsay, Paris, and other people who actually do have a place being discussed on Court TV because of their bouquet of arrest records but really don't deserve any more air-time than they already get from every other tabloid show on the block. Why does this show exist again? In a preview for what's coming up, Isaiah notes that we should check in in 5 years to see if certain communities are still using the N words, or the F words, or the W words, B words, H words, or any other words beginning with letters. 3:12 PM EDT: The lady from Extra is saying that her boss says that he tries every day to not make Britney Spears be a part of their television show. Funny, because I feel the exact same way about Isaiah Washington. Star just said that thinking about Britney makes her apoplectic. 3:03 PM EDT: Star begins with an intro on the show and notes that she wants to get us all talking, but for the right reasons. We then move onto The Wrap Sheet, where Geraldo and two ladies I've never heard of are going to talk about Jenna Bush. Star gives a shout-out to Brooklyn, so she obviously knows I'm watching. You have serious issues
Trust me
My issues with Isaiah Washington are confined to the fact that he has yet to apologize for calling his coworker a faggot and blamed the gay mafia for his being fired from the show, without ever taking responsibility for his own actions. And we only continue to cover him because he keeps threatening to unleash new information about it (i.e., accuse T.R. Knight of lying -- again), which makes it of interest to the site. I'm perfectly happy to have him go on his way and have a career, but if he keeps dragging out the f-word incident, it falls within our scope.
I'll ignore the "bitchy queen" insult, thanks.
Falling Star (Jones)
Glad you're looking out for us Mr.Juergens!
I would actually be very surprised if there was ANYTHING interesting on Star Jones' show!
;)
As for Isaiah: I think if he wanted to make people see him in a positive light and work on damage control, why not start doing more work with GLAAD or something instead?? We all make mistakes. But just take ownership of your mistakes and be honest. I can't place my finger on it, but it just seems there is still something shady going on about the way he's handling this "F word" aftermath.
Star Code
Star is back and the same as ever. I used to watch The View on a frequent basis when Star was on. I got to know her and the reasons why people dislike her so much. Star is a sourpuss. She has a chip on her shoulder the size of California. She always knows how to put a monkey wrench into a conversation to make people uncomfortable or saying things with double meanings.
This Isaiah interview had two meanings; help a straight black man out and kick gay people down. Gay people and atheists she does not like. She's made that clear for years.
Star is gaining weight. You can tell especially in her arms.
The set looks like Tyra Banks' old talk show set (Tyra's show is moving to NYC this fall). I'm not happy that CourtTV is "revamping" the entire network. In January, they are going to rename the network TruTV. This show would be more suited for Lifetime than CourtTV. If this is the direction they plan on going then the network will be like countless other cable channels. I don't know why they have to revamp anyway because they are one of the top cable channels.
I have a feeling this show will be a bust. The people that thought she would be the perfect starting point for the revamp were not thinking right. As I said earlier she is a sourpuss and that is displayed perfectly clear on screen no matter how much she tries to hide it.
Do we really need to hear
Funny Article
Good article, who doesn't like a good Star Jones joke? And thanks for keeping this issue alive. When Isiah keeps bringing it up, it is an issue to all gay people. The fact that he is trying to re-write history here is completely insane. He screwed up, thought he could fix it by doing some crappy PSA, and he's now pissed off it didn't work and he got fired from a hit TV show. He's a loser and I hope his new show tanks.
