Liveblogging the Inauguration: Welcoming our 44th President in sweatpants
So here we are, with politicians and dignitaries filing in (including Dick Cheney ... in a wheelchair?) and anticipation building. And now that Oprah is here, we can officially begin our liveblogging coverage of the ceremony and knock two spaces off of our OBAMA BINGO card! We'll be hopping the channels as the events progress and commenting on our favorite moments, and would love to have you join the discussion with your observations. Join the fun, after the jump!
11:13AM EST: CBS: Okay, so Cheney is in a wheelchair, which is not in and of itself funny. But the fact that it's because he "pulled a groin muscle" while "moving out"? HILARIOUS. 11:21AM EST: Jimmy Carter just got the full "Medieval Times trumpets" welcome. Must remind him of his childhood? 11:29AM EST: The first daughters-elect of course look ADORABLE ... but Aretha Franklin what are you thinking?! Maybe since she's the only singer performing today she thinks the size of her bow needs to make up for it? And I'm not loving Laura Bush's Hale-Bopp robe look. 11:31AM EST: CNN: This was all worth it just to hear Anderson Cooper say "Ruffles and Flourishes". And here come Michelle and Jill! Oh to have been a fly on the wall of that dressing room... 11:34AM EST They're booing Bush! Or maybe they're saying "Boo-ush" "Boo-ush". I'm not sure. - snicks 11:41AM EST: CNN: The Bible being used has not bee used since the Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. They're bringing out Obama, who looks impossibly composed. Xanax with his coffee, perhaps? 11:45AM EST: "Ladies and gentlemen ... " ... are you ready to rumble? Seriously, where did they get this announcer?! Obama is introduced as Barack H. Obama. 11:49AM EST: Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, who famously had to deliver the news to the media that Harvey Milk and George Moscone had been shot and killed, gives the introduction, focusing on the historic nature of the moment. She then introduces Rick Warren. Smattering of applause. 11:52AM EST: CNN: The first two facts in the fact bar at the bottom of the screen noted that Warren's selection was controversial to the gay community and that Warren was a vocal supporter of the proposition to deny gay people of their right to marry in California. "And justice for all". Except us, right Rick? "Treat all people with the respect that they deserve"? Shut the hell up. Aretha Franklin, with bow 11:58AM EST: Aretha's "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was ... serviceable? But that bow? Transplendent! Joe Biden is being sworn in on that Lincoln Bible, which looks like it weighs about 35 pounds. I hope Jill did her curls this week! 12:00PM EST: So Biden's middle name is "Robinette." Wow, who knew. And why the hell is that crusty curmudgeon Andy Rooney swearing him in? - D.A. 12:02PM EST: And while Yo-Yo Ma plays a John Williams tune, Barack Hussein Obama, while reclining comfortably on a blue chair and listening attentively, becomes the 44th President, by Constitutional decree (he becomes President at noon whether he's been sworn in or not). 12:07PM EST: And moments later Barack Obama takes the oath of office (with a kind of adorable fumble on the wording) and is sworn in. Are those cannons being fired in the distance? Whoa - indeed they are! Diane Feinstein introduces Obama, and the crowd goes INSANE. Eat it, Rick Warren! Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel arrives at the ceremony 12:17PM EST: Obama's speech highlights the challenges ahead but emphasizes that we will accomplish what we set out to do. "We are ready to lead again." 12:26PM EST: Lots of focus on responsibility, be it global, ecological, fiscal and personal. "A new era of responsibility" to "duties we seize gladly". He ends on a high note about "braving the icy currents" with "eyes on the horizon". Nice! 12:36PM EST: The poem was nice, but I'll leave that to people who know that kind of thing. And why is the benediction being delivered by the creepy old man from Family Guy? Somebody hide Scotty! He does plead for "tolerance, not intolerance". We'll see how that goes. 1:31PM EST: So to finish up, Reverend Lowery wrapped up with some folksy words of inspiration about racial unity that was way more fun than a benediction has any right to be. Afterward, President Obama and Michelle escorted the Bushes to the helicopter that would take them to Executive 1, and CNN repeatedly made the point that they couldn't remember the last time a new President walked the outgoing President out. The Coop can't get over the fact that Chief Justice John Roberts messed up the oath. Hell, he's had to work live with Kathy Griffin and nothing like that ever went down! Towleroad just pointed out that the White House website has already been updated with a lengthy list of LGBT civil rights pledges. 2:48PM EST: Okay, is anyone still watching this nonsense? Poor Senator Feinstein just had to oversee the ceremonial handing off of the crystal bowls on the sideboard. I'm not sticking around until they get to the ceremonial handoff of the Salad Shooter, Roomba and Shamwows. 2:52PM EST: Developing: A Senator (as-yet-unconfirmed) has collapsed. It looks like it might be Ted Kennedy. Yep, CNN is confirming it was Ted Kennedy, and Obama spoke words of support and best wishes to him. 3:11PM EST: Good heavens, both Ted Kennedy and West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd (D) have been taken away from the Inauguration Luncheon for medical attention. Senator Kennedy apparently had a seizure of some sort. 4:07PM EST: Wow, Mr. and Mrs. Obama have gotten out of their car to walk the last few blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue and the noise from the crowd is DEAFENING. This is insane! Insanely awesome! Submitted by on Tue, 2009-01-20 12:36. |

Information overload
Greetings from abroad!!!
I'm preparing myself for work as I watch the transmission on a local news channel (I don't like CNN) and I just wanted to congratulate all for this historical day and lets hope he had a good foreign policy because we like it or not the rest of the word are linked to what's happening in USA.
Greetings from Argentina.
OK, I think I love him.
OMG, I always though that you (Americans) were being over the top with Obama, but I'm listening to him right now and I think I love him too. That man sure can talk.
Sadly I must go to work now so I will come back later to check up if you put a video update of his speech.
I never got poetry...
The invocation sucked.
The invocation sucked. "And justice for all"? Whatever, you lardass hypocrite.
Obama's speech was dull. And we got no shout-out this time. That's what we get for calling him out. No soup for you!
I liked the benediction. Lowery might've been a bit funny sounding, but don't judge the gift by the packaging.
Boo-ush!!!
I was saying Boo-ush.
Lowery
Presidential oath
According to CNN during the oath John Roberts mis-quoted the oath, ironic since it's in the constitution, thats why obama laughed and stopped for a second because he had probaly memorized it.
Also Roland Martin pointed out how no one clapped for rick warren :]
I'm scared
The fact that Chief J Roberts couldn't read or memorize 35 words of our Constitution correctly when his job is interpreting it? Yikes! Rookie mistake by CJ Roberts. 88 year-old Stevens knew his stuff, and looked surprisingly spy. My bet is that Ginsberg is the first to retire from SCOTUS.
Their son's time in office has taken quite a toll on the elder Bushes. Frail doesn't begin to describe it.
yay :-D
BUSH IS GONE! (and dontcha come back, ya hear?) holllaa! :-P
I do gotta say i loved how everyone got applause and cheers except....rick warren. it was dead quiet when he was announced. i loved it. and his speech....man, i don't even know where to start....so i won't.
...i um...wasn't feeling Michelle's outfit....i think it was just too much 'gold' for me.
When does the entertainment start?
No real interest in watching them eat, but I had been delaying running errands until I saw the parade, but at this rate, I won't get out until tomorrow.
I never managed bingo on my card, so I need to wait for the balls - mostly I need celebrities.
"Waiting For The Balls"
Inaugural stuff
Did you see the below from Fox? Those crazy kids:

And of course, thrilling that you mentioned the passing of the ceremonial shamwows. I just inaugurated Brian Juergens the official jester to my heart.
Here in DC I took a cab downtown with my sister and her family about 40 min before the ceremony. Though the subways were crowded like Ellis Island in the early 20th century, the streets were completely empty, surreally so, and I've never made better time downtown.
We got out a few blocks from the Lincoln Memorial where the barricades began, and walked to the base of the memorial where the crowd was full, but not packed, then watched on the jumbotron. Amazing joy from everyone, a wonderful sense of warmth amid the cold. It wasn't euphoria. More like relief. Tears and cheers and all the beautiful flavors and attitudes of the human rainbow standing shoulder to shoulder. It looked like America, and it was awesome.
God Bless America!!!
(And, Aretha's My Country Tis.... was amazing.)
the beginning is done
I am genuinely proud to see hope being shared by millions of Americans and billions of people world wide. But when we call this a day of freedom for all, while one of our worst oppressors blesses this president, this country and this very moment -I am not left feeling hot with anger, but cold with terror.
I want to say to the Democrats and Obama's faithful supporters, please stop. Stop asking bigots to lecture us about "justice for all" and how we need to "Treat all people with the respect that they deserve." And if you are unable to include gay people in your vision of freedom for all Americans, then don't pretend that your dream actually includes all Americans. It is cruel to try to make me believe that my oppression is worthy of the consecration and double-speak of a man like Rick Warren.
What a Fantastic Day!!!!
What a terrific, phantasmagoric, awesome, inspiring, transformative, joyous and hope-fulfilling day this has been! It actually deserves more and better adjectives, but that's all I've got.
I'm happy, joyous and hopeful for everyone in America, but I'm especially happy for all my black brothers and sisters. I work with several black people, and I think all but one took off the day today to watch the event with family and friends. The emotion they feel about this is more intense than I ever expected. But when I think about it deeper, I think about how I'll feel when we inaugurate the first openly gay president, and he's standing there with his partner, and all the country and all the world is rejoicing with us because of the milestone and what it means. THAT'S exactly how my black friends feel today, and I am so overwhelmingly happy for them.
I hope neither they nor others have any sort of pollyanna-ish illusions about the problems we face and the ability of Obama (or anyone) to wave a magic wand and instantly fix them. Government by its nature is slow, collaborative (hence the need for bipartisanship to accomplish much), and filled with false starts, roadblocks and missteps. That's the way it is, but it's better than the alternatives.
So good luck and best wishes to Obama and the new administration. Perhaps with most of the country and both houses of Congress behind him he can turn more of his words into deeds than the typical president is able to do.
