Black's Speech was near perfection

What I loved about it was that he did not accept the frame that it's God versus gays. He makes it about them realizing that, if they are people of faith, they don't have to choose between the two. i know this was about him getting an award for a movie, but that was a beautifully constructed statement.

Black's Speech

I don't really get into any of these award ceremonies, although I am a sucker for any news article on yahoo's main page. There's currently one about this year's academy award winners, and I was pleased to see they included part of Black's speech, as opposed to me having to read about it here on AfterElton.

"Milk" writer Dustin Lance Black offered an impassioned tribute to Milk, the pioneering gay-rights politician who was slain 30 years ago.

"If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he would want me to say to all the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than by the churches, by the government, by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value, and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours," Black said.

Sean Penn Called For Gay Marriage!

And denounced bigotry.

Love him.

Cried a bit

Black's speech made me inch a tear, it was rly nice but what got me was the support and the faces of the audience like Kate Winslet.

I was also happy with Sean Penn's speech, denouncing bigotry and saying that people who voted for Prop 8 are in shame.

Overall, the Oscars were really good, especially Mr. Wolverine.

I loved...

.....the way Sean admitted he's hard to work with. And his hands were just shaking when he was trying to read his list of thanks. That shows a lack of ego that is refreshing and gratifiying to anyone that has ever worked in the industry. His speech was perfection and my estimation of him soared tonight.

"shame in your grandchildren's eyes...."

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

Great night, great show

Though the show had some minor flaws (I wasn't a fan of the production numbers, though Jackman was certainly game), the presentation of the awards and the winners themselves made for one of the best Oscar shows in, seriously, decades.

The decision to have 5 previous acting winners present this year's awards was absolute genius, utterly, utterly brilliant! And I'm over the moon that my beloved Kate Winslet--aka, The Great and Glorious Goddess Known to Mere Mortals as Kate Winslet--finally won her long-overdue Oscar (go see The Reader, she's brilliant, as usual). And Sean Penn, not only winning Best Actor for playing a gay icon, but giving one of the most blistering denunciations of bigotry and hate--unforgettable! Thank you Sean!!!

And bravo, too, to Dustin Lance Black!

I absolutely agree about

I absolutely agree about the acting awards being presented by former winners.  It seemed to show sincerity on display.  Rare for these types of awards shows.

I can't be a fanboy for Jackman though.  When I heard he was host, I knew there would be Jackman grandstanding a la the Tonys from a couple years back.  It just doesn't play well.  I don't think he's that terrific a song and dance man.

Congratulations, Slumdog and Milk

As I was unable to watch the ceremony, I hope you are planning to provide links to the best speeches.  I'm especially interested in hearing what Sean Penn had to say.  I find it hard to argue with any of the Academy's decisions this year.  I really enjoyed "Slumdog Millionaire" (right down to the Bollywood ending) and look forward to seeing "Milk."  Penelope Cruz is one of the best actresses around, and what can anyone say about Heath?  Even "The Duchess" got a nod--presumably for showcasing Dominic Cooper, but Keira Knightley was lovely in it as well.  But I'm curious--what happened to all the "surprises" we were promised?

Thanks so much, Whitetee

And thank you, Sean and Lance.  Both speeches inspire hope and remind us what a great forum the Oscars can be for gay and human rights.  I hope everybody that can afford to will do as Sean suggests and give to the Trevor Project.
