OMG: NPH + Liza with a Z = Gayest SNL EVA

I honestly don't know why I'm so excited about this, but it's being reported that Liza with a Z will be making her debut appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, the same night that out actor Neil Patrick Harris hosts the show.

Liza's official site notes that the appearance is a brief walk-on cameo gag type thing, which has us wondering exactly how she'll play into a skit. Hey ... wasn't NPH the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway a few years back?

Please tell me that this is on the right track: So You Think You Can Cabaret? It's legends versus revivals as Sally 1.0 and Emcee 2.8 vie for supremacy in a Willkommen-off!

I must be the only gay man who is not a fan of Liza's

As the adult child and brother of alcoholics, I am not enamored with Liza in the least.  I loved her album Liza with a Z, but that's it.  Otherwise, I couldn't care less about her.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but I don't support alcoholics or drug users.

I know what you mean, Richard

But Liza is part of gay culture whether we like it or not. She's the Crazy Aunt we promised Mom on her death bed we'd "look out for."

And don't forget, Liza used to have "it" by the truckload

No, you're not the only

No, you're not the only one.  And I welcome the haters to bash me for REALLY disliking Streisand as well.  Give me the "Forbidden Broadway" versions of either of these two any day of the week over the real thing.

I've never liked her

I've never liked her music.  I just appreciate her outreach and care for the gay community.(Mind you, our patronage and purchasing power has kept her career afloat, so the relationship is mutually beneficial).

Must. Watch.

And this will be the first time I've ever watched an episode all the way through.

Technically, wouldn't Liza be...

...Sally Bowles version 3.0 (in the film, with Jill Haworth being the original Broadway version 1.0 and Judi Dench being version 2.0 on the West End). This would make NPH Emcee version 7.7 (being the 7th actor to play the Emcee in the 3rd Broadway revival, following the film and 2 previous West End productions)...?

Anyone remember Molly Shannon as Liza

in the sketch "Liza in the Morning" or something like that? It was a one-time deal, though I think they were hoping it would catch on.

Anyway, Molly Shannon was fantastic as Liza and had this absurd conversation with a robotic Mr. Blue Bird perched on her window. Julianne Moore was the guest host that week and appeared in the sketch as Gillian Anderson playing Scully from the X-files. Julianne/Gillian/Scully and Liza are having happy talk with big cups of coffee.

Julianne/Gillian/Scully: Liza, this coffee smells suspiciously of whiskey.

Molly/Liza: Well, it's coffee to me, baby [big high kick].

Brilliant!

She was always "Judy Garland" first and "Mama" second...

Boyd, you are officially my favorite new person.

I adore Molly.  "Good Morning with Liza!" is terrific.  The sketch first appeared in the Matthew Perry episode, but I don't enjoy it as much as Julianne Moore's.

Y'all are giving SNL way too much credit

As great as the Cabaret bit would be, it's WAY too insiderish for SNL.  I'm betting they've got NPH as his "How I Met Your Mother" Barney character claiming he can pick up any woman... cut to Liza...

Terrible episode.  NPH

Terrible episode.  NPH delivered well what he was given, but there's not much anyone can do with the unfunny.  Very disappointed.(The Liza sketch was probably the best of the night and the only one that made me chuckle).

I CANNOT believe I stayed up for this dreck. As Michaelangelo

said above, the problem was not NPH who did the best he could with the dreadful material they gave him. What a waste of my time and his. SNL owes him an apology. (Caveat: I fell asleep the last half-hour so perhaps the rest of the show was brilliant. Oh, look, the Nobel award committee just arrived at my door to give me this year's Nobel Prize too.)

ouch

You guys are tough. I thouhgt NPH did pretty good on the show. I enjoyed myself. I knew that SNL had lost the great writing and comedic geniuses of Fey and Pohler. What's really left? Neil gave the show the life that it needed.

On a side note, SNL, since MadTV is going off the air, can you hire some of their best performers and writers? Bobby Lee needs to be on a sketch show and you need to try something different. Its just not working.

Thanks.

For those in the U.S. you can see the Liza cameo sketch on Hulu.

This Was Actually Better Than Usual

I know it's hard to believe but the NPH show was one of the better SNL shows overall. None of the skits were as awful as usual and NPH was one of the best hosts they've had in a while.

The Frost/Nixon, Broadway, and hamburger skits were pretty funny.

This is the first time I've felt that the company actually rehearsed their skits more than usual.

Of course the appearance of Liza was fun, though they should have had NPH interact with her.
