"Lost" gets a gay character ... or gets back one, anyway

****If you haven't watched last night's episode, SPOILERS follow...****

Yes, after four seasons and countless plot twists (including one pink herring) it was revealed last night that one of the show's 4,397 characters is a gay homosexual.

Last night's episode was mostly about Michael, and how he was dealing with the guilt from doing ABC's dirty work for them in culling a few of the cast's DWIs. But amidst that intrigue, we also learned that Tom Friendly, one of the ... er, friendlier ... Others, is an out gay man. There had been hints to Tom's gayness previously (he had mentioned that Kate "wasn't his type" once before) but this is the first concrete evidence.

We also learn that Mr. Friendly (played by M.C. Gainey) makes it off the island and tracks down Michael in Manhattan, and has at least found time to clean up and pick up a dapper boytoy named Arturo. He gives a suicidal Michael a beat-down and then breaks the news to him that the island won't let him kill himself. Michael learns that the wreckage of the flight has been found and goes to Tom's hotel room, where Tom asks Arturo to excuse them. They share a quick corner-mouth-peck and Tom gives Michael a look that says, "one word and I'll kick your ass again." He tells Michael that he doesn't make it to the mainland too often and when he does he likes to indulge himself.

Tom gives Michael a chance to redeem himself by going undercover on a freighter that has found the coordinates to the island and killing everyone onboard. Sounds like Old Testament redemption to me!

So what'd folks think? Did everyone assume that Tom was already dead, and were you surprised to see him pop up as a wealthy gay man pulling the strings?

This was implied when he wa sint he locker room with Kate when she was changing. It went a long the lines of he wasn't interested in her at all and, obviously, it was because she was a woman.

Yep

You can see Tom's scenes here.

Also, I would love it if Tom came back, but I think Michael's flashbacks took place before Sawyer shot him. Naomi was already on the island when that happened, and she was getting ready to board the freighter when Michael met her.

Mr. Friendly

Yep, if you look at the timeline of when he would have had to get on the boat, and how it was only about two/three days ago current island time that Tom was shot and killed, it's pretty clear that he's (probably) still dead.

And then they killed off the Hobbit kid...

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

I've always believed that Boone (Ian Somerhalder) was originally intended to be gay, or at least to have "issues" with his sexuality.  The writers began by hinting that he and his sister were incestuously involved, then there was a scene in an airport where Sis was teasing her brother about checking out the men.  Both of these characters were eventually killed off, perhaps because the producers didn't want to "go there."  I lost interest in the series after that.

The Other Gay...

I was pretty happy when Tom said Kate "wasn't his type" back in the early days.  Happy because it was said matter of factly and not made a big deal out of.  I enjoy it more when a gay character is not introduced as such, but you realize they are just in the course of the story.  I know in my life, the first thing out of my mouth isn't "Nice to meet you, I'm a homo."  I'm happy JJ has included such a diverse set of characters in one of the best television shows ever.

Lost "outing" is a bust for me. No reason and bad execution.

Head and shoulders the best show on TV for me, esp. now that The Wire has ended its run; however the gay angle was not one that I welcomed in any way as presented. I am still counting the days until the next episode.
