Meet the gay series regular from "Better Off Ted"

We just got quite a little pick-me-up from our friends over at ABC: It seems that one of the central castmembers of the mid-season comedy Better Off Ted is openly gay.

An openly gay man in the cast alongside out lesbian Portia de Rossi DiGiorno DeGeneres? Say it ain't so!

Meet our new favoritest person ever...

Jonathan Slavin as Phil

As his last name might suggest, Jonathan Slavin is a hard worker.

[pause for laughter]

A TV vet since a memorable role on Caroline in the City, Slavin has been all over the dial, as a series regular on Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Union Square and in recurring roles on My Name Is Earl, Summerland, Wings and more. He lives with his partner of 14 years and their dogs in LA, and proudly marches in Gay Pride parades and participates in the California AIDS Ride.

On Ted, Slavin plays research scientist Phil, who is cryogenically frozen by his boss as part of a research experiment. He thaws out, from the looks of it, but given that the show takes place inside an unscrupulous scientific testing facility, one can imagine that he might find himself in similar straits again.

Speaking of straits, Phil is also of the heterosexual persuasion. Two gay actors playing straight roles in one show? It's like the whole world has taken crazy pills!

Hard Pill

Slavin was the star of Hard Pill, a 2005 movie about a lonely gay guy who volunteers for a study for a pill that could turn him straight. It's a really powerful performance, deeply touching. I've loved him ever since for playing that role.
