Mika and Perez's curious connectionOn Friday we decided to treat ourselves and head on over to the Time Warner center to catch sexually ambivalent British pop star Mika's first East Coast in-store and signing. And I'm a bit sad to say that it left a bad taste in my mouth -- and I'm not just talking about the lollipops that they handed out.
It wasn't that Mika started an hour after the scheduled time -- he was at a photo shoot (for Out magazine, as the PR guy was keen to announce to the throngs of teenaged girls and thirtysomething gay men that had gathered) and these things happen. It wasn't the fact that there was no oxygen to be had after about twenty minutes or that someone right in front of me stank to high heaven. It was the fact that Mika was introduced by Perez Hilton. Those of us who have been following Mika's Stateside invasion have noticed that Perez has been oddly prominent at the early appearances of this particular musician. Odd, in that Hilton isn't a music critic and doesn't run a music site -- he's a gossip writer who has made his politics crystal clear when it comes to celebrities whose sexualities fall under public scrutiny. After having forcibly "outed" Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris, Hilton said on his own site:
Oh really? "The closet no longer exists"? How interesting, then, that Hilton is now an honorary member of the PR posse of a man who flat-out refuses to discuss his sexuality publicly. Isn't Mika exactly the kind of celeb that Perez would usually attack for his coyness? Could it be that Hilton has compromised his well-documented principles for the chance to be part of an album launch and for a place in the pocket of a pop star? I would hope that Hilton has at least wrangled an exclusive closet-bursting interview from the singer (if he is indeed gay) in return for his troubles -- anything less and I'd think the guy was losing his edge. There has to be a reason why a man who has made a career of outing people and a singer who won't discuss his sexuality but actively courts a gay audience are sharing the stage like some sort of acid-induced sister act. Was this Mika's doing? Or Perez's? I hate to point fingers, but there's something very wrong with this picture, and it's not just the hair color.

Refusing to come out?
Ugh...
Perez has been hyping Mika's
Perez has been hyping Mika's album on his site for months.... he has the right to introduce him since a lot of Americans first heard of him through his blog. Is he not allowed to exist at these type of things because of people still hating his guts for "outting" Lance Bass? Someone who already outted himself when he was being seen in public with an openly gay reality star, and most people knew was queer for almost a decade. BTW, Lance and Perez recently made up and were spotted hugging each other after talking. So if Lance can be cool with Perez, why can't people here?
There are far worse people Mika could've had praise him, Ann Coulter, Fred Phelps, Pat Robertson to name a few.
Plus, Perez's comment that you were pointing out as wrong and insensitive actually makes sense but you're just disliking it because of whose mouth it came from. T.R. and Neil have both proven that you can be gay and have a successful career in 2007, the days of Elton John having record smashings over coming out have past thankfully. There really isn't anything celebrities have to be ashamed of at this point. T.R. coming out didn't affect the shows' ratings at all, more people were disgusted at Isaiah Washington's mouth than T.R.'s sex life.
What?
What have Neil and TR proven?
They have proven that you can continue to work in your current role after being outed. Ask the 100's or out gay actors having the door slammed in their face before even being given a chance. TowleRoad, Out and Advocate all have recent articles about how it's hard for gay actors to get a break because of their sexuality.
Perez is a hypocrite. You talk about how Perez has changed the environment for gay people in Hollywood and there is nothing to be ashamed of, yet Mika won't talk about his sexuality and Perez allows him to stay in the closet.
Whatever.
Mika says all there is to
"Keeping it quiet" is hiding
Perez has been hyping Mika's
double post, sorry
Leave Mika's sexuality alone!
What's original?
As soon as someone explains what is original about him? He sounds liks George Michael, Queen and most recently Scissor Sisters. Mika is a taste of the sound that is currently coming out of the UK.
It would be like saying 98 Degrees was original during the boyband craze.
I CAN EXPLAIN
I CAN EXPLAIN II PART
This post makes my eyes hurt
Amen! All caps
PEREZ DID OUT MIKA!
