Mika: Why don't the gays love him?

Brit/Lebanese pop sensation Mika is confused. And I don't mean sexually confused, because even though he refuses to speak about his sexuality publicly, I'm quite sure he's got it all figured out, personally. Which is why the shaggy-headed chanteuse can't fathom why, with his Freddy Mercury falsetto and colorful clothes and defiantly flamboyant posturing, the gays haven't fallen for him hook, line, and swisher.

Just a thought: maybe gays don't like being pandered to any more than any one else does. And Mika's mixed signals have a whiff of opportunism about them, something that can turn off many gay folks faster than the words "Don Imus sex tape". He actively markets himself to a gay audience and yet won't acknowledge his own sexuality, be it straight or gay (does it matter? No -- and that's what makes his coyness so bizarre). He is notoriously tight-lipped about his personal life, yet has "Queen of all media" Perez Hilton -- who became famous for outing gay celebs -- on his promotional tour, and has somehow kept Perez from digging into his personal life and splashing it across his pages with hot-pink "HOMO!"s and "GAY!"s scrawled across it. Doesn't smack of collusion at all, does it?

While I myself find the guy's music catchy (almost annoyingly so), I'm not a fan of the accompanying feeling that he's patting my head and picking my pocket at the same time -- and maybe I'm not the only one, by the sound of it.

Maybe this just further proof that the gays are a more cautious audience (or "target market") than many people think (something that was touched upon recently in an article on gay-specific advertising). Otherwise, what could explain Mika's failure to grow a healthy gay following? He fed them, watered them, and did everything else it said to do on the box. Let's just hope he didn't feed any of them after midnight, because we all know what happens then!

Shut Up and Sing

That's funny. I just posted about how I will finally admit that his album is actually pretty good but I still can't stand the guy for some reason. Mika. Simply. BUGS THE S#$T OUT OF ME.

Maybe it is the pandering on both sides. Usually I don't mind if someone refuses to talk about their personal life but it feels like a PR move here.

who says the gays don't love

who says the gays don't love Mika?    I bought his cd the day it came out in America and on several gay-friendly boards I post at, MIKA is arguably the biggest thing to gay men since Scissor Sisters

Gay and Not OK

It’s because he’s gay.

There is so much self-hate within gay people.  If Mika was straight, gay men would be all over him.  They would be living on every hint that he might have sex with another man.  Out, Genre, DNA, The Advocate, Out Traveler, Tetu, attitude, Pref etc all make a living off of that teasing.

Also at work here is masculinity.  Gay men are automatically considered less masculine.  His questioned masculinity (because he’s gay) is a turn off for gay men.

I know the risks and fears he has.  I’m NOT holding that against him.  It’s not his fault he has to be in the closet or any other gay person.  I fault society’s prejudice against gay people for causing the dysfunction.  For those reasons I will continue to support Mika no matter the circumstance.

John, I agree that Mika does have support from many gay people.  It's just not as widespread as it should be.

But until people like Mika stand up to society, they are only playing into that dysfunction. You can't expect a society to change without illuminating the flaws.

It Is Possible....

.... that we find his music to be like nails on a chalkboard and that's why we don't love him? At least that's how it is for me. It has nothing to do with his sexuality, straight, gay or what have you. OTOH, I'm not really a fan of dance music in general so I'm inclined to dislike it out of the gate.

Re: It Is Possible...

I have to agree with you Anthony; for me it has nothing to do with his sexuality. Jake Shears has to be one of the gayest, most flamboyant entertainers in recent history and I have every Scissor Sisters album on constant replay on my iPod (not to mention the pics & vids).

I just don't get Mika's 'homo-lite' music.

I say if you're going for a specific market, commit to it or do something else. The 'all things for all people' approach rarely works.

Mika dance?

I'd hardly classify Mika as dance music to be honest.  Yea, he has a few songs like Relax Take It Easy that is a bit on the electronic side, but I'd classify him more as pop singer/songwriter over anything.   When you call him dance, I think he'd be like a male Madonna or something

Fan of the music...

but not the musician.  His songs all say "Oh, be yourself!", while his personal statements have been "Oh, must hide!".  One or the other is dishonest, either an outright lie or just opportunism - whatever the motive, it grates.  So, love the music, don't much like the musician.

I respect his desire to keep

I respect his desire to keep things private. Look at Britney Spears nothing she does is private and while she may or may not be crazy I am sure the constant media presence in her life is not reducing the strain. Mika has every right to want to keep somethings private. What is wrong with being yourself if parts of that self wants to be private?

Scissor Sisters

I love Mika and I love Scissor Sisters, but I think Scissor Sisters' lack of stateside success (seriously, I Don't Feel Like Dancing should've been a #1 hit here) is partly to blame for Mika not coming out.  Universal has the contracts for both artists' distribution and Universal seems pretty dedicated to having Mika crack the states, where the Scissor Sisters has been met with hesitation amongst a lot of heterosexuals (I find this funny tho.... gays in America have come so far in the past 20 years, but yet Boy George, Village People, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys... had no problem scoring hit singles in America back then but yet now Scissor Sisters can't cross over here?) so Universal is probably telling him to keep mum about his sexuality until they've milked him for all they can.

the Scissors

The Sisters' failure to catch on in the States was partly (mostly?) due to their blacklisting by American retailers because of very pointed comments that they made publicly about them (which were likely entirely warranted but got them in a heap of trouble). I don't think their sexuality had much to do with it at all.

Perez Hilton is "Gay"

I read Perez's site all the time,  but I think he may be just pretending to be gay.   He has posted pics of himself making out with Vanessa Minillo (sp?) pre-whoever her famous boyfriend is now.  He also talks about breast sizes and posts pics of him touching women inappropriately.

He seems to be more of a non-sexual cartoon character than an out gay man.   Maybe that's because he put his testicles in a lock box and gave them to Paris Hilton in exchange for use of her name and providing her with good press, (ie not reporting the bad stuff, like her arrest, DUI, etc.)

Maybe he is gay,  but has been "objectified " by women who use him as an accessory.  ("This is my gay, Perez.")  Maybe he has forgotten how to be a gay man,  instead of a gay cartoon character.

Anyway,  I'm thinking of offering a reward to anyone who can capture a photo or video footage of Perez with his boyfriend, on a date, etc.  proving that he is really gay.  Maybe we could make a contest out of it!

Well, DUH

That one song he had was like a popsicle.

It was refreshing and sweet at first but then was soon a sticky, syrupy mess.

THIS is why the gays don't like him..

He's not out, he's not cute, his music is so cutsy that your mom likes it and he's got no fashion sense. He looks like he's got the body of a scarecrow.

Robbie Williams he ain't.

Campy closeted performers went out of fashion when Freddie Mercury and Liberace died. In the 80s. (ok, maybe Freddie expired in like 1991).

Gays now like musicians who are "Firece." Mika ain't that.

(By the way, the reason the Scissor Sisters will never be stars in America is the same reason that Robbie Williams will never be a star in America... Campy, silly sing-a-long songs and self-parody go over here like a turd baloon. America's sense of humor doesn't include self-deprecation. )
