"Milk" trailer splashes across the web

We've been getting incredibly excited lately with all the coverage that Gus van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic has been getting in the fall movie previews in mainstream entertainment press. Here we have a biopic of a gay civil rights leader written and directed by gay men, and it doesn't feel like a punchline (I can't tell you how many giggled "Bareback Mountain" jokes I heard every time the Brokeback trailer ran in the theater).

Finally, the trailer for the film is here, giving us the chance to see Sean Penn's uncanny channelling of Milk, and it's both unabashedly queer and very moving. It also has lots of hot period hair and fashion, if the first two don't do it for ya. For a big fancy hi-res version, head on over to the official site, or watch above.

Thoughts?

It's just fantastic

I'm REALLY excited now, and I've been a Gus fan since I gave Mala Noche an award. Penn is perfect. And what's really interestingabout the trailer is the fact that while this is a tale from the Great Gay Past the issues it deals with are with us right now. And I'm not just talking about gay issues. I'm talking about a politics controlled by people -- not corporations.

Provocative trailer

"The mountain has wings."

This looks well worth the wait.  I'm already sold on Sean Penn and James Franco in the leads, and everybody else looks promising.  Don't screw this one up, Gus!

Not a Gus fan but...

I generally don't like Gus's work but this film doesn't look nearly bad as I feared it would.

It's like there are two van Sant's

One who makes "To Die For", "Drugstore Cowboy," and "Good Will Hunting" and one who makes "Gerry", "Psycho" and "Elephant".

It's hard to know which one you're gonna get, but the preview definitely has me leaning towards the first category.  Phew!

Looks great

Love the unconventional trailer. Sean Penn and Josh Brolin will definitely be Oscar favorites, as I'm sure the whole film will be.

I like that the trailer doesn't give away too much of the plot. I just feel bad for anyone who goes in without knowing how it all ends. It will be even more shocking and devastating for them.

Yes!

How great! I was initially dubious about Sean Penn playing Harvey, but he is eeriely on cue with the voice.

This is going to be one heck of a movie.

Timing

I understand that it's coming out in November in order to be fresh in the mind for Academy voters, but I wish it was coming out sooner. It could help when it comes to the national election and especially on Prop. 8 in CA.

The release date is 'historically significant'

It premieres on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Milk's assassination.

True though, it would have made sense to start showing it BEFORE the election.

Prop 8 is getting killed

We definitely don't need any help there.  I love my state!

Hope you are right . . .

but now is not the time to become complacent.  The polls don't count for anything. All that counts is what voters do in the booth on election day.  There is still a long way to go, and Prop 8 supporters are going to continue to pour money into their efforts to enshrine discrimination in the CA constitution.  It is vitally important that everyone with the ability to do so continues to remind CA voters to do the right thing and actually vote against Prop 8.

Wildmon's saying Prop 8 not

Wildmon's saying Prop 8 not getting past means the Christian Wrong's lost the culture war. So they're going to fight hard and dirty on this.

Definitely looking forward to Milk. Wonder how many HSM fanz will want to see this. :)

You're right about that

If you go on Youtube, there are lots of claims that if gay marriage is legal, churches will be forced to perform gay weddings against their will.  Their lies are shameless.

fantastic trailer

This is looking really good i had my doubts about this because i thought it would be a bit of a depressing movie, but it looks like Gus will be injecting some fun in it as well witch i think is a smart move.

Organize viewing parties for the opening weekend

Monday morning is when the suits in Hollywood check the grosses for films, even those in limited release only playing at one or two theaters.  That's when folks knew "Brokeback" was something special--it only opened in a handful of theaters initially, but bolstered by word-of-mouth and rhapsodic reviews, almost every show sold out.

The more we turn out en masse for this on opening weekend, bringing friends and big groups, the more likely it is that the numbers will be positive enough for studios to green-light more gay-themed films.  I know some folks are jaded or unmotivated and just say, "Oh, I'll wait for the DVD."  If the reviews are as good as I think they might be, don't wait--vote with your wallet.

can't wait

i absolutely cannot wait to see this movie. granted, i'll probably be going alone, but whatever. i wish more gay men of my age would leave the club for a second, and take a chance on watching something that is meant to arouse us in a different manner.

plus, i was sold when i saw the hotness in the movie...guess that's the 20 yr old speaking in me.

MILK movie locations

It looks great. The ability to get so many actual locations for shooting makes a big difference and it shows. Throw in the talented cast they landed and it sets the film up to be a must-see, and an instant classic.

Nice that the movie is being released the same year that they installed a bust of Harvey Milk in San Francisco City Hall as a tribute to him.

Amazing. Smart. Can't wait.

A positive movie about an out SF politician that was ACTUALLY shot in San Francisco and not Montreal or Downtown LA. Why can't ALL movies be this substantial? Can't wait. Not looking forward to the death scene though.

But I AM looking forward to the "White Night" riots scenes!

A very important moment in gay history that should not be overlooked. Those motherfuckers thought we were just a bunch weepie faggots until we torched their police cars!!

Screaming for an October release

If the film is as good as the trailer and half as good as the real story, this should really be released in October before the election.  That is still Oscar season for film releases and if it's a good film, it will have Oscar legs.  Great cast, biopic, historical story smacks of Oscar nominations.

I understand why they picked the date they did for release, but this needs to be out pre-election.
