News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Mores for Gays video blog (Ep. 2): The Rules of Engagement

With gay marriage legalized in California and recognized in New York, Daniel investigates a new quandary facing gay men:

Who gets to propose?

Many couples that now have the right to marry are finding themselves asked to decide if marriage is something they are ready for, or if it is something they want to do at all. With the help of an embarrassing example caught on tape, Daniel helps clarify some of these questions.

Check it all out after the break...

Future epitaph: "It seemed

Future epitaph: "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

I agree--not only is Daniel's commentary interesting and insightful, he's probably the most adorable guy on AfterElton.  More please!  (And will there be a shirtless video blog in the heat of summer?)  :)

So, I'm not sure how he'd take this...

...but it took a whole week for me to figure out who Daniel reminds me of so much in his vlogs. He totally reminds me of Steve Burns who used to be the host of  Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues (I used to watch it with my nephew when he was small and developed a huge crush on him -- Steve Burns, I mean; not my nephew, that's just gross). The resemblance is not so much physical, but more in his demeanor, warmth, and expresiveness on camera.

Gay Marriage Reality Check

Daniel needs to study American history. The first interracial marriage ban was removed in 1780 in Pennsylvania, while the last 16 interracial marriage bans were struck down in 1967. In fact, the very last interracial marriage ban was still on the books until it was removed by voters from the Alabama state constitution in 2000. That is a 220 year difference between Pennsylvania and Alabama. Alas, Daniel will be long gone and turned to dust before marriage equality reaches across the USA, if the country does not break apart beforehand the same way the USSR broke apart at the height of everyone saying it was going to last forever. A whopping 26 states have gay marriage bans in their state constitutions (wow.. larger groups outnumber and thus can outvote smaller groups to take away their freedom and equality - not exactly the foundation for a lasting country). Meanwhile the U.S. Supreme Court in its history has violated more human rights than it has ever upheld so it will not correct the problem (on that point, grand homophobe Justice Scalia unfortunately speaks the truth). The young men and women in the Women's Rights Movement in the USA at the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848 understood they would not live to see women have the right to vote, that such a day, if it ever occurred, would be enjoyed by future generations. It is important for context to understand that the USA is the same country where more Americans died during our first civil war than in all other conflicts combined to date (meaning Americans have died more at the hands of other Americans than at the hands of any other force on Earth). I have no doubt that pieces of the USA will uphold human rights for gay people if only because so many gay and gay-allied people will have amassed in those select pieces to make it so. As for the remainder, the weight of world history favors a break-up.

In agreement

I agree with the first several posters: Daniel's vlogs are really something special. (And his dreamy eyes, scruffy beard, beautifully thick eyebrows, and ironic grin are absolutely no distraction to his words. I watch the vlog over and over and over and over again just for the nuances.) I'm in agreement, too, that he should be interviewed so we get to find out more about him, though we certainly can discern a lot about his intelligence, wit, and thoughtfulness through his vlogs. Keep up the good work, Daniel!

Daniel Leary has a website

Click <----You can stalk him there. Email him. Tell him all about yourself in really long letters. Send him nudes. He likes when guys send him nude pics of themselves dressed in clown makeup while smoking...I read it's his thing. Maybe they can cover that in the interview?

Oh...it also doesn't hurt to tell him how funny he is. He likes that. It's like being told you're good in bed.

Hilarious!

Hey, luver --

Thanks for the link. His site's nicely informative. Luckily, I already have a pic like the one you described (from before I stopped smoking) that I forwarded to him.

Thanks again for the heads-up!

Engagment

I was propsed to my now ex partner at a Hockey Game a couple of years ago. So I have to agree with the PDA comment in this blog. We have since seperated since that little thing at the Hockey House (or is it Arena) I can never remember. We did adopt a child and i am glad to say we both take care of him now. Which I have to say is hard we both live in different parts of the country now so it does take alot to hold a family together. Thanks for the info i will pass that along to my new partner so he knows what is in tact. lol
