Oscar Predictions
Great blog, but I'm to the point right now I'd watch you read the phone book. I'm glad that TPTB have finally realized that for a visual medium like a video blog you need someone who has presence, and a performance background doesn't hurt. The writing is good, but you make it work. The British call them presenters and they probably have their own award over there. You have my vote.
Nous Sommes Tous Sauvages.
Clearly the winners will be
Best Picture: Milk - the only movie I've seen, but nonetheless I think it ranks as one of the best films ever made
Best Actor: Sean Penn (Milk) - someday Milk will play in a double bill with Dead Man Walking and the world will realize that acting is an art form
Best Actress: Meryl Streep (Doubt) - I haven't seen the movie but Sister Aloysius is a brilliantly written and challenging character
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey, Jr. (Tropic Thunder) - the movie was mediocre at best, but Rob gave a classic comic performance, this nomination also gives the academy a chance to be naughty and vote for something that borders on being offensive
Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis (Doubt) - once again I didn't see the movie, but what a tragic, "throw the play out of whack", character Mrs. Muller is
Best Director: Gus Van Sant (Milk) - not only because Milk was a great film, but also because Gus should have won for Mala Noche and Drugstore Cowboy
Best Animated Feature Film: Bolt - I didn't see it but the trailers made it look fun, and it's also my pick because I thought Wall-E was really overrated
Best Screenplay: Dustin Lance Black (Milk) - my only pick that will probably win and deservedly so
Best Adapted Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) - I haven't seen it but a good friend of mine loved it and thinks it will win
Best Song: Down to Earth (Wall-E) - I thought it was really catchy
Best Foreign Language Film: It's a tie! - The Class and Waltz with Bashir - they are two films I'm really looking forward to seeing when they come out on DVD
And, by the way, may I exchange the Starbucks gift certificate for a Peets
Best Picture: Slumdog

Love your video blog,
Love your video blog, Daniel!
If gay is (supposedly) the new black, then wouldn't a straight actor playing a gay character be like "blackface".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface
(I don't mean to offend any African-Americans. Sorry if I did.)
Though I am bisexual, live action movies with LGBT people don't really appeal to me. Most of my queer friends (including me) like animated movies.
Bad analogy
No, that's not an accurate analogy. Better analogies would be:
1. A man playing a woman's role, as was done in Shakespeare's day, would be analogous to a white guy playing a black role.
2. A boisterous person playing a really shy person would be analogous to a straight guy playing a gay guy.
3. A three foot guy playing a seven foot guy by using stilts and then a trenchcoat would be analogous to blackface.
4. An evangelical playing an atheist (or vice versa) would be analogous to a straight guy playing a gay guy.
Who's gonna win?
BEST ACTOR: Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)

Why is Daniel making with the crazy eyes in the pic?
After The 2006 Injustice, I sent out a several-page rant to my nearest and dearest (a hundred or so of them), explaining Why I No Longer Gave A Damn About The Oscars. I've seen all the nominees aside from "Frozen River," but that's for my own personal curiousity, not because I feel a need to kowtow to The Golden Ball-less Wonder.
The media decided weeks ago that "Slumdog Millionaire" and Mickey Rourke were worthy of all their attention, and have had their noses firmly jammed up against respective sphincters ever since. Will voters go that way? Who knows? I can almost guarantee you that the most deserving films and performances will walk away unrewarded by the Oscars, as have most of the best films in history. (Look at the AFI list.) Time decides these things, not a bunch of spoiled, petty Hollywood types who decide that they don't want to watch their screeners because of God knows why. (Matt Damon suggested that we have the awards 10 years after the films come out, so we can get a more accurate judge.)
I can't take the emotional investment anymore--now it's just another damn award show. It hurts too much to care, even with a Starbucks card in the offing.

Well Mickey Rourke just won Best Actor at the Spirit Awards
for Indies -- beating Sean Penn.
James Franco won Best Supporting and Dustin Lance Black Best Screenplay, however.
Odds are Dustin will win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars (Franco wasn't nominated for Best Supporting.)
As for Best Supporting Actor
http://fablog.ehrensteinland.com/2009/02/21/fait-diver-theres-a-riot-going-on/
Maybe it's just me, but
Maybe it's just me, but Rourke's performance reminds me of one those "freak show" turns like Dustin Hoffman in "Rainman" that seems "brave" at the time, but in retrospect is painful to watch.
