My Favorite Things of 2007

We spend so much time talking about gay-related entertainment here that sometimes even we forget that we like other stuff too. So in addition to our coverage of all that was gay in television, movies, and the like, here's some of my favorite stuff of the year. Anyone agree, or not? Share your own faves in the comments ... come on, it's not like you're actually doing any work today, right?!

Favorite Movies of 2007 (granted, Sweeney Todd will likely replace all the below once I see it)

  • Zodiac
  • The Savages
  • No Country for Old Men
  • The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
  • For the Bible Tells Me So
  • Juno
  • The Host
  • The Nines
  • Knocked Up
  • Eastern Promises

Favorite Television of 2007

  • Top Chef
  • Pushing Daisies
  • Ugly Betty
  • X-Play's Musical Episode
  • The Soup
  • America's Most Smartest Model

  • BeirutGulag Orkestar
  • Justice, Cross
  • Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

Biggest Disappointments of 2007

  • Heroes
  • Beowulf
  • Spiderman 3
  • The popularity of that insipid "Umbrella" song and the insistence that repeating a syllable over and over is a "catchphrase" or remotely creative, musically. What is this, The Wiggles?
  • Bionic Woman
  • Torchwood (I know, bring it on!)
  • Our collective obsessive delight in watching young women in Hollywood destroy themselves.

Most Pleasant Surprises of 2007

  • Kristin Chenowith on Pushing Daisies
  • The charming comedy of Blades of Glory
  • The success of Xanadu on Broadway
  • Meeting Dale Levistki (Top Chef) and Charles Busch (Die Mommie Die!) and loving them both to death
  • The return of Paul Reubens (in brilliant guest roles on 30 Rock, Dirt, and Pushing Daisies)
  • Breakout star Candis Cayne, and the genuine sensitivity and understanding demonstrated by the mainstream media during her numerous television appearances
