Neil Patrick Harris: "Out" coverboy
Neil Patrick Harris fascinates me. Hot on the heels of his biggest endorsement deal (for Old Spice, not exactly a "gay" product by any means) he's pulled his highest-profile gay media move yet in gracing the cover of next month's Out magazine (UPDATE: The full interview is now up on the mag's website). And let's not even get into the Emmy nomination, the magic shows, the Sesame Street appearance, or Harold and Kumar. NPH continues to break the rules, and we love him for it.
In the interview, NPH reportedly calls Anderson Cooper "dreamy" three times and says that gay marriage rights are important to him, though he doesn't speak to specific wedding plans for him and his longtime boyfriend David Burtka. And then he offers a bunch of pics of himself done up as the Marlboro Man in a vain attempt to make us lose track of the real important wait David who? Married what? Huh? Dreamy...

An actual gay man on the cover of "OUT"????????!!!!!!!!!
Me personally think we shouldn`t be this harsh on them
So far I can recall quite a few out gay men on OUT`s cover before:Tom Ford,Marc Jacobs,John Barrowman,Nate Berkus,Greg Berlanti,Michael Urie,Jake Shears, etc.Besides that,I think it`s a wonderful thing straight male celebrities show some appreciation for these gay fans by appearing on a gay magazine`s cover, which not many straight guys with big gay following would do.Even our own hot 100 was toped by the very straight(and gay friendly)Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal, twice, which also inclues much more straighties than gays.Cause let`s face it,if they limit themselves with gay out male celebrities only, there is simply not enough guys to choose from.
Are you sure that Michal Urie is gay and/or out?
If he has, I would really be interested as I discovered that two of my favorite singers are out, so I am trying to see if my out awareness universe is not overlooking other members in the industry. Thanks in advance!

I've spoke with Michael several times and he doesn't
I`m so sorry everybody
No worries! It gets hard to keep track of. Lord knows
what mag is David reading?
I been wondering about it for a while,so maybe just post here

Do any of you guys know who this guy is?It`s a old issue a few years back, and I`ve been dying to know more about him.
He's a gay ex-model who has a child. I think he's a designer.
The article was mostly about his house in Venice, CA--big photo spread. I don't remember his name, and I don't have the issue anymore. But he's one of the few gay men OUT has ever had on its cover.
Back before I was ever on the Internet, I sent OUT a letter complaining about the fact that Ricki Lake was on their cover right after Terrence McNally won the Tony for LOVE, VALOUR, COMPASSION. They printed the letter, so they had their fact checker call me. He wanted to know who Terrence McNally was, and "What is LOVE, VALOUR, COMPASSION?"
So much for gay men on the cover of OUT. (I am going to buy a copy of the issue with NPH, though. I've had a crush on him since he was Doogie. And I always had a feeling about him.)
Thank you so much!!
Good Interview
It was a good interview. I read it on the Out website. I was surprised that Neil puts so much effort in crafting his statements. But it is not surprising with the current internet climate. I bet by the end of the week more that a dozen blogs will mention that he said Anderson Cooper was dreamy rather than what he actually had to say about Anderson.
Oh and I love that he watches the same shows that I like: American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance! lol I wonder who he wants to win. GO KATEE (and Josh)!
Yeeeeeeess!!
GO Katee & Josh!!
I just finish reading the interview.Hope our Afterelton will get to arrange one with him someday.
I wonder why they never mentioned Dr.Horrible though,BIG.MIS.TAKE!
Missing Dr. Horrible
That's not me being viscious
Yes,ideally that would be
Yes,ideally that would be the case. But like I said a cover would be much harder to arrange if it`s limited to out gay men & women who has a strong selling point for OUT`s target audience, who also needs some publicity at that time and WOULD AGREE to appear on its cover. Afterall they are make a magazine and need people to buy it.
What do you mean "limited"?
I know
NPH is everything...
NPH gets his own talk show...
Doogie with a talk show. I'd watch every night.
Maybe when Conan goes to 11:37, NPH could get his old slot. Or he could replace the guy after Letterman tomorrow night.
Brilliant idea, Boyd.
I've always hoped David E. Kelley and NPH would revisit a new/old show called DOUGLAS HOWSER, M.D. a few years from now. They could bring Vinnie back from working with the mob, and I'll bet Dr. H and Mrs. H. could use the work as well.

outing anderson...
Ok, someone needs to refresh my memory....and i already know the answer, but just incase for whatever reason i missed something:
Has Anderson Cooper come out publically as gay? has he released a statement confirming his sexuality?? I am pretty sure the answer is no.
with that said, i just love (sarcasm) how the interviewer said the following:
OUT: And they love a gay cohost over there at Regis and Kelly. You, Sam Champion, Anderson Cooper...
Out asks Neil how he felt being 'forced' to come out because of perez, but they go and practically do the same thing.......ugh
ETA: very interesting what he said about his boyfriend david and the twins. had no idea. i did wonder if the twins are a part of his life or whatever, because neil says "had twins" and so i wasn't sure what to interpret from that.
You mean has he ever done the "Full Oprah"? No. But so what?
Curious
On the basis of my own personal experience
Unfortunately, the personal
Unfortunately, the personal experience of one person isn't very scientific, and is subject to so many factors that would have to be classed as non-scientific. The fact that you reference Kinsey means that you must value hard evidence. As someone says later in this thread, the whole issue is complex, and it depends of definitions. Kinsey said that about 37% of men (and 13% of women) had had at least one gay experience leading to orgasm, which stunned many people at the time. That number included people who had experimented once at age 14, those who had tried it during a drunken party, etc., plus, of course, those who were primarily gay and those who went through a "phase" of a long or short period. Many of those, of course, then went on to "regular" heterosexual life, with their gay experience left in their youth.
Kinsey also said that about 10% of men had been "predominately" homosexual between the ages of 16 and 55. Further, 8% had been EXCLUSIVELY gay for at least three years between 16 and 55. Lastly, 4% had been exclusively gay from adolescence until the time of the interviews.
Speaking for myself, I think of a fellow gay as being someone who is primarily drawn, for sexual and or emotional reasons, to people of their own sex. I don't see the logic of including the guy who at 14 messed around, or the guy who gets drunk and makes out with a friend. Those people will generally be married, will not see gay issues as I do, will not be a potential "mate", will not identify with the culture or partake in it.
Or look at the reverse situation. If you counted as heterosexual anyone who'd ever had sexual contact with the opposite sex, then probably 99.5% of the population would be classed as heterosexual.
I don't see any issue here, beyond what the actual facts are. Beyond the facts, different people can define things differently.
Kinsey Scale
Actually, the Kinsey scale is 0-6, with 0 being the "worst", 3 being half and half, and 6 being the "best". They also added an additional classification for asexuality, though there, again, you'd get into a matter of definitions.
Kinsey always stressed that the scale could be applied anew at any point in a person's life, and his "grade" could change throughout his life.
Some thoughts.
1. As much as I adore NPH, I wouldn't want to see his talent restricted to a talk show; given his talent with comedy, drama and singing, it's too bad the variety show is no longer popular--can you just see him teaming up with John Barrowman or Cheyenne Jackson for a duet or a comedy skit ala Carol Burnett? I would SOOOOO watch that.
2. In the post NPH/T.R Knight world of media coverage, I think the fact that Anderson Cooper has never denied being gay, despite many sources saying so, is now considered tacit approval to journalists to say, yeah, he's gay. And I see no problem with that.
3. I have to agree with David: based on my experience, if we include not only out-and-proud gays, but also bisexual leaning to gay and closet cases, I'd say the percentage of the population that's 'homosexual' is closer to 15 or 20.
I was so in love with Doogie
To this day my friends tease me about being a pedophile every time I look at a handsome young blond because I was so into NPH. I am, to this day, attracted to guys who are intelligent, well-spoken, and wear their masculinity in a natural way. "Straight acting" is a joke to me, it automatically says I am insecure about my own masculinity. Sorry folks real confidence outweighs looks everytime and is not just a label.
Mr. Harris is a man comfortable in his own skin who is running a multi-million dollar corporation: his career. He must be that rare thing in Hollywood, a reader. His comments are well crafted from clear thinking. Timing and intent were everything in this case. Instead of just jumping all over this like a publicity hound he just let it be before giving out any interviews. It was like the tabloids go you're gay and instead of spinning it off as inaccurate He (and his people) said, I am deal with it. End of story for the tabloid's interest. If they don't get you looking bad and struggling they have no show to sell. Mr. Harris is not dull, he is brilliant.
I'd go 30%, Joseph
Don't forget bisexuality
Which was the real crux of the Kinsey Scale. Our society has a very either/or cultural mentality (liberal/conservative, Democrat/Republican, good/evil, black/white, etc). Thus there is a lot of tendency to define as "gay" anyone who is attracted to the same sex, even though they may not be exclusively so. The number of bisexuals, based on Kinsey's work, is believed to exceed the number of homosexuals, possibly by a very wide margin. But the exact numbers are subjective because many people who engage in gay sex do not do so exclusively.
How do we define them though? Is a person only "bisexual" if they're actively having relationships with the same sex? Do they "stop" being bisexual if the enter into a monogamous relationship with an opposite-sex partner? What about so-called "ex-gays"? All evidence suggests that their orientations have not really changed, but their behavior has (at least on the surface). How are they counted?
It's a very complex topic.
Watch those metaphors, dear!
Subliminal
Not as complex as you might think
Michael Urie
You can assume whatever you like but Urie is no financial position (Ellen and Neil) to officially come out. WTC VIEW is a lovely little film by Brian Sloan. Michael is trying to deal with the loss of his almost fomer roommate who was killed in the WTC collapse befofre could move out. He is also trying to figure out love and what it means in his life as he interviews potential new roommates. It is a very effective tale with many subtle nuances. Michael is terrific in it. He also recently played gay again here in los Angeles in the Blank Theater's production of DICKEY AND BABE, a retelling of the Leopold and Loeb with its two tragic lovers.
You can say all that and still not know if he is gay. Does it really matter and is it our concern if he comes out or not. No matter how far we have come there is still a big stigma attached to being openly gay in Hollywood. There are still closeted actors and actresses who face ruin if they come out. It can, as NPH said, have devastating effects on their lives with alcoholism and drug addiction, to stay in the closet. Who among us deals well with fear? Many of these actors and actresses are not household names and just want to do what they love. Many can and do live quiet and personal lives without incident.
I have always felt that outing was actually a form of internalized homophobia. Perez Hilton would seem to be an example. He is doing his work for the betterment of the gay community, He wants to be as famous as they are but with know discernible talent. Though the real question no one asks him would be, "Who is financing his career?" He is neither that bright or that connected to get this far without some deep pockets. Gossip is just as sleazy today as it was when Cliifor Odets and Ernest Lehman wrote THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS over 50 years ago.
Knowing someone is gay does not enrich my life, nor does seeing that fact destroy a career. Let Michael be Michael and stop worrying about who he has loved today.
Is it my imagination...
