New "Blood Work" video blog: Taking a bite out of "True Blood"

You may already know that I'm a bit of a horror nut. And so I thought that the much-anticipated True Blood vampire series (which premiered last night on HBO) would be a good opportunity for me to jump on this "vlog" bandwagon that everyone's all hopped-up about.

So behold our latest vlog series, Blood Work. Every week I'll discuss the ins and outs (and ins and outs) of the racy and decidedly queer new vampire series with a special horror-related guest.

In our first episode, indie horror writer/director/actor Alan Rowe Kelly joins me to discuss the premiere ep. We play "Fang, Marry or Kill?" with the show's main characters, talk about the underlying social metaphors, and give our completely batpoo theories on what might be coming down the line.

Check it out after the break! And chime in below with your own thoughts on the show or on the vlog - but if you have read the books or otherwise know what's coming, please be sure to give ample SPOILER warning in your comments or head on over to the Spoiler Forum to discuss in more detail. Thanks!

very interesting, Brian

Now that I think of what you said about Sam the bartender, you may be on to something!

btw, do you have a screengrab of you getting your eyes poked out in that movie?

I need a new wallpaper.

You hit it, Brian!

The first time I saw the dog the thought immediately crossed mind that this was Sam. Plus the affection for Sookie and the almost stare-down with Bill makes a lot of sense.
Dragonkiss's picture

I agree

At first, I thought Sam was a shape changing vampire.  Then I thought he might be a werewolf.

Someone pointed out to me one of the pictures in Sam's office is a yellow haired child and a dog.

Transforming into a Vampire

In various different media about vampires, one of the ways to be forcibly or willingly transformed into one is: The Vampire must completely drain the victim of their blood. Then, the vampire feeds the victim some of their Vampire Blood back to the victim. This is the most common method of transformation.

Granma knows something of the origin of Sookie's powers.

Great VLOG. Alan was really fun. I hope he will appear again on this VLOG. And of obviously, thank you Brian for this VLOG as a fan of this show I appreciate it.

I've already posted this a million times before but I LOVE THIS SHOW. Of course, considering the mild infamy I have on this Website that might be deleterious to the show's ratings

Going off topic. Kind of

There's this new movie coming out "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". Brandon Routh has a part in the movie as a gay porn star. Sci-Fi Wire did an article about it and the article and/or Kevin Smith the director give off a HOMOPHOBIC vibe. Here's the address http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=3&id=59552

Kevin Smith and the writer of the article made it seem that making Superman gay was a form of revenge against the studio.

I was wondering whether anyone else get's the same vibe. I didn't know where else to post this on the Afterelton Website.

I always got the impression

I always got the impression that Kevin Smith was very non-homophobic -- infact, that he enjoys taking the piss out of straight-guy queer paranoia.
the herald's picture

The "revenge" is more about

thumbing his nose at "The Man", and their stuffy attitudes.  Kevin Smith is one of the most gay friendly straight guys on earth.  Even in the article he says "wouldn't it be great if Superman was gay?"

Mmmmm

Very interesting theory about Sam, didnt make the connection, but thought something was up there. Good catch.

When it comes to the vampire lore, generally they are allergic to silver but they dont die because of it as is the case with werewolves. Metabaron mentioned the most used way of convertion and, as far as I can remember, the only project where people die of a vampire bite is in Underworld. Everywhere else, at the most, it changes their personality nothing more.

I dont think Jason will become a villain like some have said, he is just a jerk because he has been allowed to, not a bad person. I would fang and fang him too.

The contrasts found in Lafayette are very interesting to me. So far, I dont find him stereotypical because of them. We will see.

Also think grandma knows more that she let on and I would not be surprised if Sookie has some vampiric blood in her vains.

Still dont get the specific gay metaphor, right now is wide enough to apply to many. I think one of the aspects that would make my mind up is the way other gay characters are treated.

God vlog, looking forward to watch more.

Sookie Bill Chemistry

It's there. So what worked for me is the relationship that's beginning to develop between the two. There's a hesitancy - almost shyness - on his part matched against her "what's that girl up to?" bravado that quite appealed. The hurt look that subtly flickered across his face when she teased him about being Bill the vampire as opposed to Vladimir, for example. A nice, unexpected - oh, god that word - vulnerability that the actor didn't oversell. Plus it was a definite turn on that she saved his gorgeous ass from the despicable Rattrays.

One thing I'm not sure of. All the parralells and echoes of "gay" in the vampire experience as they "come out of the coffin," deal with prejuidice, demand equal standing in society. I have this hideous vision of the likes of Pat Robertson et al saying "See! We told you so!" But I have a good measure of faith in the guy that brought us Keith and David. And at the very least it'll make for some interesting conversation.

Right now, I think he could be just a good manipulator - I think he wants something from Sookie (see my next post about conniving her to be invited into her home). I'm just not sure what he wants, yet.

Yeah. Me, too (and there are other examples that raise the bristles on my neck, too).

More Vampire Lore

Interesting theory about Sam, but I can't get the 'woods-woman' from the torrent out of my head. I'm thinking that the dog may turn out to be the newly missing woods-woman. In the torrent version, she is set up to be a supernatural being (for those who didn't see the torrent, she causes the chain to tighten around Mack Rattray's neck) and would seem likely to be able to transform into a dog.

Since Sookie can hear his thoughts, I think it's less likely that Sam is a supernatural character. He could turn out to be a 'shill' for the audience since he seems an obvious choice to be the dog (if the dog isn't really just a dog!!). ;^D

Also, on the subject of vampire lore, Bill was workin' it pretty hard to get Sookie to invite him into her home. He initiates the conversation by flattering her about being so 'different' and asking if he could visit her in her home. According to vampire lore,  a vampire cannot enter your home on his/her own accord. They must be invited.

A distraction was set up in the previous scene with the Grandmother and Sookie to put the hint in our heads that Sookie probably would have invited Bill to her home at some point anyway, but the dialog is very clear. Bill connives Sookie into inviting him in and she follows up regarding her Grandmother's request. The writers didn't need to do that - unless it's going to become a plot point later. Bill is going to be trouble.

And one more comment

For the next vlog edition, may I humbly request that the camera person mount the camera on a tripod - and lock it.

Also, a temporary 'time-out' from the ZOOM button might be helpful... ;^)

Thanks for the suggestion

We're working out the kinks, and yes, the vibe was a bit BLAIR WITCH on this one. Hopefully the next will be easier on you. :)

True Blood is addictive!!!

I watched True Blood and found it to be the next Rocky Horror in that it will have a definite cult following (Buffy anybody). It's fantastic.

As for Bill, I believe he has a connection to Sookie and her Grandmother knows it. I feel that Sookie is some how his relative in some way. She may be his great granddaughter and that is why he is drawn to her and her to him. Familial connection.

As for the bartender, after you mentioned he could be the dog, I could see it since he is so cute. However he wouldn't be a werewolf but a weredog? caninetroph?

I think it will come out that Maud (or whatever her name is) is not really dead but a vampire who seduces men and leaves them with a murder rap.

I like Sookie and hope it is Bill who saves her from the wretched Ratrays (suitable name). This will create more of a bond between them.

If there are more gay characters on the show I hope Jason gets into a gay relationship. He seemed very interested in that vampire making out with Maud in the video. When Sookie says she met a vampire in the bar, he seemed to question her about him in an almost obsessive way believing him to be the vampire in the video. He was very detailed about his appearance. Just saying.

Charlaine Harris - SPOILER

Whoa! The camera work was like "Cloverfield".

SPOILER BELOW...

Brian, you might want to consider featuring someone in your videos who has read (and has complete knowledge of) Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries (like ME!).  I suspect that Alan Ball will be sticking close to most of the arthor's storyline/character development. For example, Sam Merlotte is not a werewolf, he's a shapeshifer - big difference.

...END SPOILER

BTW, Anna Panquin is NOT Austrialian or British; she was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and then moved to New Zealand at age four, and then later finished high school in L.A. (Thank you, Wikipedia!).

Aha!

I knew I was onto something!

Since we gather that most folks haven't read the books, we'll likely keep the vlog discussion at the level of folks who are experiencing the story for the first time, and keep ourselves in the dark, accordingly. And we should be careful with spoilers in the comments, something I should have noted above and will add now.

I've actually created a special forum for folks who HAVE read the books and want to discuss any differences and upcoming developments on the series that would be considered spoilers to folks who are new to the series - it's over in the TRUE BLOOD forum:

True Blood SPOILERS Forum

But if we do decide to call in an expert, we'll keep you in mind!

Brian is right

Yeah. I haven't read the books and don't intend to but I am watching the show. I've seen the second episode but won't say anything about it.

My crazy theory about the Stackhouse's

I haven't read the books either so the following is just the mad ramblings of an overactive imagination.  Please skip it if you think there might be some remote chance that it could be correct.

As soon as I heard Sookie's name the term "succubus" came to mind, which in turn suggested that her brother, Jason, might be an incubus.  Jason's veracious sexual appetite would certainly fit that theory however Sookie's complete lack of sexual experience and the revulsion she displays every time the subject is broached would certainly not ... unless she is under some spell that suppresses her desire to seduce LIVING souls.  Maybe the eldest Stackhouse knows something about her grandchildren's unnatural conception and has taken steps to mitigate the consequences since their birth.

Just my crazy thoughts.  What do you think?

Ian's picture

Follow up

If Jason is indeed an incubus, why is he so disinterested in seducing Tara?  What is "wrong" with her?
isoron's picture

Jason and Tara

I suspect that since Tara has spent so much at Sookie's place that Jason thinks of her a more of a family member.  He sure does seem like a sexual vampire!
