Our suggestions for the NYC "Rainbow Pilgrimage" gay tourism campaign
It was announced yesterday that New York City is launching a major tourism campaign based around the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in an effort to draw gay visitors to the city, the first integrated campaign for gay tourists in NYC's history. The gist of the campaign is that thanks to its place in gay rights history, the city should be a "pilgrimage destination" for all gays and lesbians, and that NYC has much to offer gay visitors. We thought we'd do our part and propose the first-ever AfterElton.com Gay Entertainment Walking Tour of the city, based around key locations from some of the most notable movies and television moments involving gay folk. Put on your walkin' shoes and let's hit the streets!
The Meatpacking District (Cruising) Sure, it's pretty hard to recognize the gritty locales from the infamous (for better or for worse) gay murder thriller from 1980 now that the Sex and the City-ites have turned the neighborhood into a giant overpriced singles bar, but you can still find stray hankies and tiny baggies of god-knows-what in the cracks between the cobblestones, and remember the good old days.
Columbus Circle (Eyes of Laura Mars) Once the site of the gayest (and most fabulous) fashion shoot in the history of film, this landmark now houses the Time Warner Center and not so many burning cars or models in lingerie ripping one another's hair out. Still, worth a visit!
The Market Diner (Trick) Up in the no-man's land between Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen sits a charming diner that was used for the most entertaining scene of gay romantic comedy Trick. Be sure to do your best Tori Spelling and ask the waitress, "Where's the cheese, where's the cheese on these goddamn f*cking fries!!!" (Side note: In the poster above the boys are walking past The Riviera on 7th Ave and Christopher, which has trashy-good banana daquiries.)
Upper West Side YMCA (The Fan) We'll channel our inner Lauren Bacall obsessive and visit the pool where Michael Biehn famously gutted Sally Ross's dancer "boyfriend" with a Swiss Army Knife in the notoriously awful 1981 thriller. Bring your water wings!
The West Village (The Boys in the Band) Zipping back downtown, just for fun we'll break into a charming brownstone and get a look at the garden, just to relive Harold's merciless birthday party.
Christopher Park (Jeffrey) I love Jeffrey, and by far my favorite moment is when Darius (out actor Bryan Batt) sits down with a statue in the patch of grass across from the Stonewall Inn and says, comfortingly, "Kathy, you're not fat!"
The East Village (Rent) And finally, the East Village is almost unrecognizable these days (which is why much of the movie was shot in San Fran), but there are still enough dive-bars and squatters around to give the sense of what all the fuss was about. Exhausted? Or are there a few of your fave gay movie spots that we should add to the tour? Submitted by on Wed, 2009-04-08 17:06. |

Don't forget the Ramble in Central Park
A major scene from Angels in America takes place there. Ad it's dear to my heart for far too many reasons to mention.
Also the documentary Gay Sex in the 70's provides a useful guide of places to go -- though most of them aren't there anymore.
Other walking sights
Tmes Square, the East Village and the Upper Eastside plus the Port Authority on 48th and 8th and the Adonis Theater from MIDNIGHT COWBOY.
The Sutton Place boardwalk where Roseanna Arquette met gay con Madonna in DESPARATELY SEEKING SUSAN.
The Riverside Drive Memorial in PARTING GLANCES.
The Winter Garden Theater on Broadway where FUNNY GIRL and FOLLIES became major hits for gay icons Barbra Streisand and Stephen Sonheim.
Gay Street near Sheridan Square home of MY SISTER EILEEN.
The HB STUDIO the school run by Uta Hagen and her husband Herbert Berghof that turned out more gay actors than you can shake a stick at including: F. Murray Abraham, Stephen Bogardus, James Coco, and Victor Garber. Those are just the openly gay ones with highly recognizable names.
The Westside Piers that were the hunting grounds of so many gay men until they were torn down in 1986 as the result of the AIDS epidemic appeared in many a gay porn film and were the subject of the recently discovered late photographer. Alvin Balstrop.
That's all I am saying...
INSIDEGUY
Kathy, you're not fat!
That's my favorite moment in "Jeffrey" too!! It's so tiny and in the background, I'm glad I'm not the only one to appreciate the genius. When I made my pilgrimage I had to recreate the moment. Genius!
I think any good Rainbow Tour of New York would have to include at least a boat ride around Fire Island, if not actually being able to stop...
She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain~ Louisa May Alcott
I do too!
Every time I walk by the park I have to recreate the moment as well. Hence was my love for Bryan Batt born.
Fire Island's a pretty long haul from Manhattan, but it would be worth it if there were a bar on the boat. And they could recreate the flashbacks from Parting Glances!
