"Outrage": This film is not yet giving Larry Craig mad heartburn ... but it will
Magnolia Pictures has released the official poster for the scandalous new documentary Outrage, which kisses and tells about closeted gays in politics (with an emphasis on the Republican-types, from what we hear). The film comes from Kirby Dick, the guy behind the excellent This Film Is Not Yet Rated, and it pretty much guarantees to be a shitstorm of red, white and blue when it hits screens later this month (it preems at the Tribeca Film Festival, with a limited rollout shortly after). While part of the film focuses on out gay politicians like Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jim McGreevey (who at this point would appear on film at the promise of a sandwich or a smile in his general direction), the meat of the story is in exposing the world of gay men and women who work quietly in conservative movements against gay causes. The topic of "outing" in all its flavors is something that we discuss a lot here on the site, and the outing of closeted politicians who profit from the repression of other gay people is of particular interest. Is this a film that folks are looking forward to, or do you think it's counter-effective and exploitative? Either way, I'll probably be crying blood into my popcorn at the sight of all the combovers and ill-fitting suits... Poster via The Vulture Submitted by on Fri, 2009-04-10 09:11. |

don't care...
so this film is going to name names of closeted politicians? this film could basically ruin some of these people's lives i bet.
I don't like anyone who says one thing and does another and obviously, being gay and at the same time, doing something that hurts gay people is....well, hypocritical.
BUT... if they want to be closeted, then that's their choice. i don't agree with what they do, but i'm not in favor of exposing someone's life like that. i'm not even sure what this film will accomplish. "oh there are gay politicians and they're closeted and fight against lgbt rights..." -- then what happens? they come out? deny it? come out and lose their jobs? lose their children? their families are embarassed?
I personally think things are and will continue looking better for gay rights. there will always be closeted people and people who work against us, yadda yadda.....but i'm not going to worry about those people. i don't even give a crap about them.
maybe we should all just focus on the politicians and whoever else that actually DO fight for our rights.
"if they want to be closeted, then that's their choice"
Total disagreement.
If people are working against gay rights but then going to gay bars, using Manhunt, cruising airport bathrooms, rest stop bathrooms, or even living with their same-sex partner then as far as I'm concerned their "choice" to attempt to take away my rights trumps their right to live a comfy life. If a "reporter" works to build up an administration that works to take away my rights but then works as a callboy on a gay escort website his "choice" takes a backseat to his hypocrisy being reported. If a fundamentalist preacher condemns gays but then has sex with prostitutes (male or female), harrasses his congregants or molests children then he does not have a right not to be criticized. If someone goes into a public life, whether in politics or entertainment, they give up a certain amount of privacy and it certainly isn't up to us in the gay community to support their hypocrisy. People can give me the down thumb all they want on this but I don't believe we have to give comfort to people who seek to throw us back into the Fifties because it might affect their jobs or families--they have no trouble trying to destroy my life and family.
i just don't think...
I just dont think outing someone is gonna help anything. it's like "oh, well, you did this, so i'm gonna do this..." and the cycle will probably go on and on. what good will that do? what would the end result be? humiliation for them, and joy for us? i think we'll ALL end up looking like total asses. them for being closeted and screwing us over, and we for revealing their 'double life' and screwing them over as well.
In my opinion, i'm not going to give them that kind of attention. i will continue speaking out, voting, marching, writing letters, etc to protect my rights.
i'm not going to spend my energy outing people. i got better ways of spending it. i really don't think outing anyone, whether a politician or entertainer solves anything. like i said before, i think we'll end up looking like asses just as much as the other party.
just don't think
A leader and poster boy for the "ex-gay" movement is spotted in a gay bar. One of the clientelle of the gay bar calls a journalist who comes to the bar and confronts the "ex-gay" person and writes about it. A boy in Utah reads this and thinks "this ex-gay stuff doesn't work." So he refuses to go into "reperative therapy" and it saves him a lifetime of psychic damage.
A Republican politician who regularly votes against gay rights is outed, after the embarrassment subsides he becomes a gay activist and works for gay rights and is much happier.
A Democratic politician is outed after a scandal--rather than crawling into a hole he embraces his role as a gay leader and becomes one of the most powerful members of Congress and stands up regularly as a proud gay man.
A well respected actor is outed repeatedly, but finally comes out and embrases his role as a gay role model and becomes one of the most eloquent and well-respected spokesmen for the GLBT community--he's even knighted.
Do you want me to go on?
nah...
no need to go on. i still dont like the idea of this. I just don't like the idea of publicly outing someone. makes me very uncomfortable....but i guess that's just me. eh. i have my view and you have yours. i'll leave it at that.
One more
Who is the actor?
Sir Ian McKellen, I
Sir Ian McKellen, I guess.
At least he's the first name that comes to my mind :)
Only to glad to see our enemies lives ruined!
Would you defend Roy Cohn?
Something tells me you would.
uhh....
if i'm right, roy cohn went after homosexuals in the 1950's. being out wasn't an option then for ANYONE. there were those who didn't go after them and had wives and families and probably also spoke ill of them. oh, i should be mad at them, right? i should be mad at rock hudson and montgomery clift too i guess. i mean, they should've been out and proud. they shouldn't of had marriages and relationships with women. HOW DARE THEY.
i think some of ya'll aren't getting my view. i am against outing. i don't care who you are or what the reason is. i don't like it. that's it. I think people should make their own choices if and when they want to come out. if they never do want to come out, we should focus on the people who are out and do good. now, what is so wrong about that?
all this pressure to come out these days....no wonder some people choose not to.
There is only one choice to make
And it has to do with keeping away from the likes of you, "Liz." You adore the closet. It produces unhappy gay men looking for a shoulder to cry on. And your shoulder is always available -- isn't it now dear?
Well that game is over, honey.
Being out has always been a matter of privilege and power. If you had the money and clout you could live as you liked. If you didn't you could easily get arrested, lobotomized, or murdered. "Stonewall" and the L.A. protests that preceded it was a revolt by the lower middle and lower classes.
But I don't suppose you know anything about that -- doubtless preferring to traffic in the fiction that we live in a "classless society."
AS IF!
likes of me? haha, okay...
"And it has to do with keeping away from the likes of you, "Liz." You adore the closet. It produces unhappy gay men looking for a shoulder to cry on. And your shoulder is always available -- isn't it now dear?"
^ likes of me? what would that be? someone who happens to disagree with you? oh no, not that. yeah, real mature there. just because i believe something different doesn't make me some evil bitch that you're trying to make me out as.
as for adoring the closet, what makes you think that? i really want to know. i don't think i even hinted that people should never come out...but if you want to read it that way, then i guess i can't change that. sorry i disagreed with you. it will never happen again.
"The Likes of You" = FAG-HAGS!
Shall I draw you a picture?
Do you need flash cards?
a picture?
if you make it nice and pretty, i would love for you to draw me a picture. thanks for offering! :-)
It was primarily Communists
It was primarily Communists I think.
What?
There's a big difference
There's a big difference between being closeted, and being closeted while actively ruining people's lives! That's what these despicable Republican-Christian types do. They remove the rights of people to be considered family, children are taken away, people lose rights to their real or adoped children, to their property, even if those people WERE married (California). So yeah, I hope they ARE outed and I hope their lives ARE ruined.
The only misgiving I have about Outing anti-gay bigots, is that for some people that reinforces the negative association with gays. i.e. "Well of course that politician was lying and sleazy - he was gay"
Fascinating
I hope the film will be good. I'll probably see it anyway. I very much enjoyed Dick's last movie This Film is Not Yet Rated about the rating system.
This subject was explored a lot when the Mark Foley scandal hit Washington at the end of 2006 but hopefully the film will concentrate on the issue of being out in politics overall and how many who are gay (on both sides of the ideological spectrum) see their sexual orientation as something to hide.
Outing
If someone is using the office they hold in a hypocrital way then if they are outed great. They are ruining other lives by their hypocrasy. They chose to live the life they did, they should recognize that it has consequences. Outing the morons who say one thing and do another is deserved. Remember "its a choice".
Frankly I think the term should be retired
There are only people living in truth
and liars.
Hallelujah!!!
If they are gay and working against us, drag them kicking and screaming out into the light!
I will not shed one tear for these individuals, and may they know nothing but shame and misery for all the hurt they cause my brothers and sisters.
Dick did you say?
Sure, great, Dick is a great name for this guy.
'This Film Is Not Yet Rated' was not educational for anyone with the internet or a passing knowledge of the history of Hollywood, but it did expose innocent people to harassment from interest groups and wackos. Anyone but me recall the harrassment the MPAA got when Michael Moore put out Farenheit? From both sides -- now imagine the righties putting pressure directly on those people and the families Dick exposed. Would we have even seen that movie? It's the 21st century, if you want your film out you have too many sources to let the MPAA slow you down! He went too far, it was no better then a Bill O'reilly treatment. (See the Union protests at AIG execs homes for an example from the left.)
And this film's subject matter appears to be the same if it is the same technique -- just a step too far.
Why is it that no gay person is allowed to hold honest beliefs other then those of the gay monolith -- or decide to live their lives the way they want to if it doesn't fit the template? Wait a sec, isn't that what the gay rights struggle is about? Or is it only allowed if it fits the Gay Agenda we always hear about but never get a copy of? (No wonder it seems like there is one).
No wonder both parties screw the gays -- at least the right doesn't even pretend on this one. The left just takes our money and cross their fingers behind their smiling backs, but that smile sure makes us feel good as we vote in lockstep (who had the most anti gay MC at an event last year?)
Most of these people are not evil -- they may be wrong, but not evil. If you believe a child is best raised by a mother and father you still have the right to advocate for that position -- particularly if that is what you were elected to advocate. Studies show that is a wrong position, but outing the person is not going to open the person up to change.
I don't know of a gay person who is against gay marriage who is married to his husband -- and I certainly don't know of any politician in America (closeted or not) calling for the hanging of gays in the streets -- now there would be a documentary, exposing exactly how it is Ahmadinejad got rid of all the gays he is so proud Iran doesn't have.
I do know there is the potential to devistate many innocent people and families just to appear holier then the hypocrites.
Advocating a position does not mean your no longer human or that you are evil. It only means they disagree with you.
If the rule for gays is that only out gay people need apply then even Barney Frank would not have been elected (elected 1980 -- came out 1987). Being gay should not exclude you from your dream and your future, even if that is as a Senator from Idaho voting for DOMA.
what a load of hooey
Kirby's MPAA film --
didn't expose anyone to harassment, dear. It unmasked who the censors were. And BTW used an openly lesbian detective to track down MPAA officials. This was one of the most interesting parts of This Film is Not Yet Rated.
I've known Kirby for a great many years. He's a fascinating guy. Smokin' hot by (alas!) straight. I highly reccomend his film on Jacques Derrida.
Expose -- Unmask
I'm sure he is wonderful, he appeared quite intelligent and your right, attractive.
But hunting down and exposing the confidential raters is exactly the defination of exposing to harassment.
You yourself said he unmasked them -- can't do that without exposing them -- for doing their job.
I have no problem exposing the MPAA and even it's directors -- but the individual raters was over the line.
Also I don't care if the woman was a lesbian -- she did a very good job and that is all that matters in my book.
Well I DO Care that she was a lesbian
What Way Works?
When the Vermont Legislature overrode the Governors veto the readers of Michelle Malkin's HotAir blog voted* and commented (even before the vote stacking by gay blogs) overwhelmingly that they either liked it or that they accepted it since it was legislated.
No one had to out the Governor -- all they had to do was convince the people and get a law passed.
These, and a good portion of middle America, are the people who will be lost by intimidation and bullying.
While this movie will more then likely get rave reviews by gays, the press, and Hollywood -- those are most certainly NOT the people we need to convince in order to pass lasting and accepted change.
Attack the policy not the people.
*The vote I saw before the vote stacking showed 70% of the people accepted the Vermont action -- 38% accepted legislation since it was the correct way to pass gay marriage, 32% liked the legislation, and 30% favoring a federal marriage amendment. It looks like the legislation way wins hearts and minds nationwide.
Brian Boitano will do a Triple Lutz in the 9th Circle
No one asked you to thank
My opinion
I'm generally against outing. I think everyone has the right to tell that they are gay when they want (if they want).
And i tend to forgive people who lie about it when they finally came out, it must be hard for a young actor or singer come out at the beggining of their careers, and even i think it's better to avoid the issue (if you don't want to come out) the truth is that an actor or singer whoe is extremaly private about his private life is almost inmediately labbeled as gay (being true in most of the cases, but that's other thing).
So i don't like when perez hilton outs somebody (even when he seems better informed about this question than about others), but polititians are other thing.
I don't mind thet a gay polititian stays in the closet unless that he works against gay rights. Stay in the closet is a respetable option, being an hipocrit is not. So i don't mind an outing of a blatant homophobe (self hated in this case).
It's just curious that most (i think every one) of the republican gay scandals last year, were related to men who worked hardly against gay rights
It's not curious at all
It's typical.
It's what the closet creates. Liars who'd sell their own mothers for dog food rather than disturb their percieved "comfort zone."
