outTunes: Regina Spektor, "Laughing With"

While she isn't herself gay, singer/songwriter Regina Spektor has made huge contributions to LGBT causes, including joining in last year's True Colors Tour and donating the use of her hit "Fidelity" to the marriage equality fight in this moving video.

The quirky anti-folk heroine is back with a new album, Far, and a video for the somber but sweet first track, "Laughing With". Enjoy.

Beautiful and poignant

"Laughing With" is a beautiful and poignant song, of which I find many of Spektor's are. Her beautiful and unique voice lends itself to lightness justaposed with incredible depth more easily than anyone else's I've ever heard and her lyrics are as affecting and catchy as they come. Also from her new album is the song "Blue Lips," as somber and as sweet as this one is. It can be heard on her MySpace profile at myspace.com/reginaspektor.

I've also always felt a strong connection with her song "Samson," which speaks to me as both a gay man and a religious Jew. "And history books forgot about us / and the Bible didn't mention us / The Bible didn't mention us / not even once. // You are my sweetest downfall / I loved you first, I loved you first." And yet, it reminds me of Jonathan and David, and that gives me hope. Which only makes me think of the album's title, "Begin to Hope," and then I'm the one laughing with Regina Spektor.

She truly is something special.

Vale v'shalom.

Regina Spektor consistently

Regina Spektor consistently seems to create the most beautiful songs in existence. I love the eclecticness and eccentricness of her lyrics. She doesn't spew out identical tirades about being burned by love, and break ups, but chooses to adapt ancient myths or random day situations of life into song lyrics. Each song she releases is always a hit in my eyes. I've yet to find someone who can match her vocal and lyrical range.

Agreed with Samson. I always think poignantly of gay couples whenever I hear the lyrics 'And history books forgot about us/and the Bible didn't mention us.'

I also love how when there's no English rhyming words she pulls out Russian or French or Latin words and rhymes them [like Apres Moi or Dusseldorf].

Truely Lovely

Miss Spektor is a delightful songstress. My favourites of hers are Fidelity & Samson.

Incase someone would like to hear Samson sound by a gentleman, here is a link to Mr Sandoval, who has a voice that is....[lost in thought of his voice]. Anyways, here is it:

You want Samson sung by a male recording artist?

How about Canadian Idol winner/singer/songwriter Theo Tams?

He has been opening shows on his tour with it.
