No More Mister Nice Guy: Pat Boone's homophobic political calls

Just because recent political scandals haven't brought quite enough crazy, particularly when it comes to gays and Republicans, the flailing recumbent incumbent candidate for Kentucky governor (Ernest Fletcher) enlisted leather-vest-happy, otherwise rather irrelevant crooner Pat Boone to record some homophobic telemarketing messages for the GOP.

You can listen to the calls in all their unhinged glory over here, but here are a few samples of what they got into (transcription courtesy of PageOneQ):

"... Now he faces a man who wants his job who has consistently supported every homosexual cause: same sex marriage, gay adoption, special rights, to gay, lesbian, bisexual, even transgender individuals."

"The problem (inaudible) gay advocacy groups (inaudible) enthusiastically endorse Bashear, knowing he's their guy. Kentuckians have already voted to amend the state constitution to prohibit same sex marriage. Now, do you want governor who'd like Kentucky to be like another San Francisco? Please reelect Ernie Fletcher."

This coming from the man who notably lived next to the Osbornes, and appeared on their reality show. And heck, he's dressed for the Folsom Street Fair already! (And yes, that album cover at the top is real. We don't joke about that kind of thing here.)

While it's not likely that these phonecalls will get Fletcher the votes he needs to get re-elected, they will provide us with literally hours of YouTube mashup enjoyment.

    Poor Misunderstood Pat

First off, you'd think Ozzy & Sharon would have wised him up by now.  And I agree with Brian--that album cover is SO gay!  (Disclaimer: I used to play Alice's version "No More Mr. Nice Guy" as a teen--when I was, you know, working the weed wacker.  I know, too much info!)

But let's face it, Pat Boone remains a homophobic figure and homophobia plays well to the GOP base (ask George W. Bush).  Still, considering the fact that recent polls show 75% of Americans think this country is on the wrong track, there may be more serious issues to deal with than "special rights" and (gasp!) same-sex marriage.  Not for Pat and his wingnut crowd.  It's all about the Benjamins, baby.  I assume Ben Franklin was straight.  Right?

    oh, brian...that's nothing.

have you ever read Pat's "MODERN AMERICAN FAIRY TALE"?

go here and tell me this doesn't read like some cocaine-induced paranoid freak out.

Did he just call me ... Venezuelan? I have no idea what I just read, but I think he's my new prose hero.

    Thanks for the tip!!

    Recumbent candidate?

I think you mean "incumbent", though he could be lying down on the job as well.

    Even better!

I almost wish I'd thought of that, but no ... I was just drunk on the sight of Pat's twinkly eyes.

    Thanks for the correction!

    Some guys just don't

know how to grow old gracefully!  Pat do us all a favour stick to warbling heavy metal songs and your old favourites like "April Love" and "Love Letters In The Sand" and leave the political commentary to people who have some credibility.  I mean how many people under the age of 60 pay attention to what Pat Boone says?  If this is the best the religious right can do in the US then gay rights is definitely on the right path!

    Cheers

    JBE
