Kevin and Julia sittin' in a tree: The "Brothers & Sisters" kiss you didn't want to see
Not being terribly well-versed on Brothers & Sisters myself these days, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the hizzie is going on in this brand new batch of advance stills from the January 4th episode (wait, is that the Smoke Monster?). But hopefully the mention of "dream" in the ep's title indicates that this is all just some awful nightmare: "A Father Dreams" - Elizabeth's illness and her uncle's sacrifice cause a volatile and emotional confrontation between Kevin and Tommy that could make or break their relationship as brothers. Meanwhile, Saul reintroduces a high school crush (guest starring Nigel Havers as Roger Grant) to Nora, and Justin finally decides to leave the nest. More steamy pics after the break ... if you're into that kind of thing.

So Matthew Rhys demanded a straight kiss...
hmm.
Either that or the higher ups at ABC has sent down a de-gaying order.
Jumping the Shark
I really hate storylines like this. All gays have to try it once, right? Well, Kevin's in his thirties and already married to a man, so it's a little late for experimentation.
One or some of the following will happen:
1. She'll become pregnant.
2. It will turn out to be a dream sequence.
3. He'll try to hide it from Scotty but someone will blurt it out at yet another family gathering.
4. He'll have an "Am I really gay?" crisis.
5. Etc., etc., etc.
Kevin
There's been no "de-gaying order."
The title of the episode should be clue enough as to what is going on here. Kevin's subconscious is just working through the knowledge that he and Julia "conceived" a child.
It's part of a storyline about Kevin's feelings about fatherhood coming to the fore, not an "Am I gay?" storyline.
(And even putting aside the absurdity of Kevin really kissing a woman, the fact it's his sister in law should tell you enough it's a dream.)
Dream no, nightmare YES!.....
This can't be anything less than a nightmare sequence for Kevin and he'll end up waking up in a cold sweat screaming, or it will end up being one in the next few episodes when the whole thing gets blurted out in front of Scotty and then the whole you "cheated on me with that will ensue"..... the most intelligent response I can at this very moment come up with after seeing this is EEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW! LOL!
As i know
Well.....
Great stills...
Obviously
Another thought ...
Could this actually be insecure (impotent) Tommy's fantasy, dream (nightmare) sequence knowing that his gay brother can father a chilld, but he can't - and therefore, his wife and Kevin share something, and in Tommy's confused and angry subconscious this somehow equates to sex? Probably overanalyzing .. lol!
I think I prefer your theory
Tommy's Insecurities
I'm in agreement here, and part of it is just that they are way overdue for some serious examination of Tommy's personal issues.
He's always been a little neurotic, being the eldest Walker son, but not the eldest child (Sarah and Kitty being older). Thus on the one hand he saw himself as "William Jr." but on the other it was really Sarah who William saw as his heir in a business sense.
Tommy has three major issues on a personal level.
1) He's basically lost the family business. It has become very clear that Holly, his late father's mistress, has completely usurped control of the company. She's managed to drive off Sarah, Saul and Kevin and demonstrated to Tommy that she is in charge, not him. They are not "partners" as they were at Walker Landing, he works for her.
2) William managed to father at least six children (five of them with his actual wife!). Tommy on the other hand is shooting blanks. He was forced to turn to his gay brother, who would never father a child through any means except artificial ones, for a shot of good semen. It's been a little iffy at times and this doesn't help. For a while he was able to pretend that Elizabeth was his and Julia's natural daughter, especially since Kevin wasn't very interested in being involved in any way, and neither he nor Justin had any enthusiasm for settling the "whose sperm won the race" question. But you could see how painful it was for him to admit to the doctor that he wasn't the biological father. That he had to turn to Kevin for a slice of liver, because Kevin's the bio-dad, is rather emasculating and a bitter pill to swallow, especially as it brings us to...
3) His relationship with Julia. When she had post-partum depression she left him to seek emotional solace with her parents and sexual solace from some ex-boyfriend. Now it's been reiterated that one of the things binding them together, Elizabeth, is only partially his. In the back of his mind he has to be questioning their relationship.
So Tommy's got enough angst to justify an episode worth of dark fantasies. Which is just as well. He's come across as a bit of a prick this season and actually showing his insecurities would help humanize him a bit.
better be a dream..
I wouldn't be surprised if
My thoughts
#1 I don't believe this is degaying or that Matthew Rhys asked for a straight kiss. He kisses women in real life, he doesn't care about whether it happens on the show. Few straight actors on TV have ever been as supportive of gay affection as he has been.
#2 B&S has been better about showing affection between men than most other shows, but I still can't help being annoyed we get more here than we ever got with Kevin and Scotty, or Kevin and Jason, or Kevin and Chad.
#3 Tommy sucks, and blows. I'm sick of the show's constant attempts to make us side with him.
#4 Matthew Rhys has a HOT HOT HOT ass. If I were the actress who plays Julia I might ask if I could grab it during one of the scenes...just for realism, you know.
oh no...
WTF, THEY'RE MAKING KEVIN STRAIGHT? THIS IS AN OUTRAAAGE!
...haha, i can't believe some people have fallen for these photos. like ABC would really be that stupid.
Julia looks a little too into it
My bet is that this is a dream sequence. Or a nightmare sequence as the case may be.
My reasoning being that Julia looks just a tad too enthusiastic about these goings-on for it to a be just an hiccup in Kevin's homosexuality. While I'm sure the poor dear would do almost anything to get more air time at this point, I somehow think that this stretches it. While we know Julia is not above a little adultery I would expect that she has the sense not to do it within the boundaries of the No Secrets Walker Family. So even disallowing Kevin having had his Gay Gland accidentally removed during the surgery, I see one of two options here:
1) This is Kevin's dream/nightmare(?) about what it would be like if he were the hetero son William would have wanted.
2) This is Tommy's nightmare. In this last episode it was really drilled into him that Kevin is Elizabeth's bio-daddy and not him. Tommy has a fragile ego to begin with (trying to be William II and largely failing, especially in the sperm count department). If post-operative Kevin started to express an interest in having a greater role in Elizabeth's life I could easily see Tommy freaking out. The result could be a nightmare in which Kevin steals everything from him, his daughter and his wife.
Thus my bet is on #2. While Kevin has a big enough ego to imagine that Julia would be totally into getting busy, I have a hard time imagining him having a dream about doing her on the sofa in Robert's office. If he did have such a dream I would expect he'd wake up screaming (I know I would!). Also, we've seen in the past how Kevin gets nervous even at a little flirting in his workplace. So it would be a major character shift for him to suddenly be willing to try and score his sister-in-law in an office full of Republican senatorial staffers.
I'm thinking this is Tommy's nightmare. Because the worst thing he could imagine would not only be Julia cheating with his (gay) brother (talk about emasculating!), but that she would be really into it (as appears to be the case in the pics).
Kevin
But this is likely Kevin's dream, not real life. Dreams by their nature are often wildly exaggerated and "out of character." They are rarely a reflection of reality, but rather are ways our subconscious works out difficult emotions.
My guess is that it's as simple as Kevin's psyche going into overdrive (since finding out he is Elizabeth's bio father) and translating that fact into the above scenario. After all, Kevin "conceived" a child with Julia, and what's the most typical way of achieving conception? Sex.
And, yeah, I'd bet Kevin does wake up pretty freaked out. ;)
That's why we know it's a dream
In the waking world Kevin probably wouldn't even consider making out with Scotty at work, much less in Robert's office! To do so with Julia would be just way too far out of character.
Add in the fact that, as I noted above, Julia looks really into it. In the pics this doesn't look like a case of accidental spark. She looks really pleased to be making out.
So this is pretty obviously a dream sequence, the only question is whose dream. I'm still betting it's Tommy's. Obviously though it's an attention grabber from a teaser perspective which is exactly why ABC is showing it off in the trailer and pics. They want to make sure viewers are eagerly awaiting the show's return after several weeks off. That certainly would not be accomplished with clips of "Nora fusses over something", "Kitty obsesses over her adoption" or "Sarah continues her downward spiral into becoming neurotic".
I dont get why people are
I dont get why people are already freaking out! Judging by the title of the episode, this is obviously a dream sequence, though I'm interested to find out WHOSE dream this is actually, LOL. ;)
Anyways, the pics are really hot!
ABC, a Little Less GLBT Every Week These Days...
Well, after the network went along with killing the single transgender character actually historically played by a real transgendered person this month on "Dirty Sexy Money" in yet another pointless, brutal murder of a GLBT character and after the weird gay purge that seems to be going on over at "Grey's Anatomy," I wouldn't put anything past 'em at this point.
Still, it's obviously a dream sequence, as it fits exactly with the last episode's discovery that Kevin's the baby's actual father, and if Tommy is dreaming, as the title implies, then that's what's gonna be on his mind.
Has anyone realized that
Has anyone realized that this whole controversy is exactly what ABC wanted to happen? The show is off air for three weeks so there needed to be something to keep it on people's minds for that time. I'd say this will do it..
Quite perceptive!!!
Kevin
I doubt that Matthew demanded a straight kiss, he doesn't seem to care too much about that. Quite to the contrary, when he speaks of the K/S marriage, he seems very genuinely proud of being allowed to portray Kevin.
I also doubt that he would object to steamier scenes between Kevin/Scotty. And I believe that those scenes could be hotter then anyone else's, because Luke and Matthew have a chemistry between them.
I am curious how this scene will play out. The pictures are nice though.
OO chemistry?
Doesn't Scotty get to have "issues?"
It's the title
It's something like "A Father's Dream" or such. That rules out Scotty and narrows the field to Tommy and Kevin.
Scotty's nightmare would probably revolve around Kevin dying from his already much-abused liver finally exploding after having a piece of it carved off.
