No on Prop 8 update: Protesters take the weekend as misinformation hits the airwaves

This weekend tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand equal marriage rights in California. From San Diego to Silverlake people of all walks of life came out against the initiative in an impressive (and overwhelmingly peaceful) statewide demonstration.

The LA Times did an extensive article on marches in the area. And SFGate took a look at demonstrations across the state.

Celebs did their part in standing up against the measure: at the Silverlake demonstration (one of the largest and longest), Noah's Arc's Darryl Stephens and Wilson Cruz were among the marchers. And also at Silverlake, Drew Barrymore addressed the marchers with a message of support, saying, "I will fight with you."

In a conservative county, an otherwise quiet lesbian couple spoke out against the injustice.

Meanwhile, Governor Schwarzenegger spoke out against the Prop 8 passage.

And Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council appeared on CNN claiming that "homosexual activists" had been rioting. Thankfully Anderson Cooper and his other guest were there to call him out on his lie. You can watch the video after the break.

Am I missing something?

You state that Gov. Schwarzenegger "stood firm with his conservative constituents and spoke out against the Prop 8 protesters." However, you link to an article that appears that he is being very supportive of the same-sex marriage movement, has spoken out against Prop 8, and is encouraging activists to not give up and to take the issue to the California Supreme Court, where he thinks Prop 8 can be defeated. I've read the article several times, which includes the following quote: "With his favorable comments toward gay marriage, the governor's thinking appears to have evolved on the issue." Am I missing something in this article? I'm not a big fan of the governor, but it does sound to me like he is being much more supportive of our cause than he has been in the past, so I don't understand that line in this article. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what I seem to be missing here.

Nope

It's been fixed, was a miscommunication on our end. Thanks for pointing out.

Thanks!

Thanks for clarifying this for me, and fixing this so quickly! I'm originally from California (but unfortunately, I'm now living in Kentucky). My family is very affected by what is going on concerning Prop 8, so I am following all of the news on the issue as closely as possible. I'm glad that I was reading the article correctly! I hope that the governor's support to repeal this proposition could help sway the Supreme Court Justices to do the right thing!

What's with the fake "balance" in the News?

I understand it's a controversial issue, but is it ever possible JUST to have a homosexual guest on, explaining the experience, without ALSO inviting a bigot for fake 'balance'?

I notice when there are stories on racial equality activism, the news does not feel it needs to "balance" the story by inviting a KKK member who feels minorities are inhuman.  Why do they do the equivalent with gay stories?  Please, news media -- enough with the fake 'balance'!

I hate it, too

And one of the great ironies is that for years religious fundamentalists have claimed homosexuality is a choice, when it's not, whereas one's religious belief IS a choice (even when forced upon a child, the adult can choose to either not to believe or to believe a different religious teaching). I'm waiting impatiently for somebody to point that out. That doesn't mean that they should be persecuted for their belief (as long as it doesn't harm somebody, which, I suppose, one could argue that this is what they're doing, but I digress), but our federal constitution is designed to prevent a religion from persecuting others with state sanction.

I completely agree with you...

...about this. Having these trogladites on to "discuss" these issues has bugged me forever. I just wrote a letter to Anderson expressing my view. If enough people complain, they do listen at CNN. Once, when I was complaining about something he had on his show, he actually read my letter out on the air.

good for...

good for  Drew Barrymore. :-)

Why do i feel that straight celebs are fighting more for this than the gay celebs?

I'm just surprised how pathetic the irony is.

Tony Perkins is a lying liar

Does he realize that his namesake suffered greatly at the hands "well meaning people".  To paraphrase EVITA, all you have to do is is look at this guy and know his every word is a lie. Their whole scare campaign was based on lies and now we have another from them.  I don't have to worry about who is going to burn in hell, that is up to my all inclusive and loving God.

Whatever happened to the truth in advertising regulations?

No to prop 8

We should have the choice to marry whom we choose....

My partner and I want to have the choice when and where we would like to get married.

He and I should not be dictated to as to being told we can only marry each other in a particular state or on the other side of the world.

Let us all come together under one roof and let my partner and I choose when and where we would like to marry in this wonderful state of California....

Its a great state and one which we can show other states and countries on how to live together with a wealth of diverse races, cultures.

Lets stand firm and together for change.  No to prop 8 !
