Quinceañera headed for the poco screen?

The delightful John Polly over at Logo's NewNowNext scored quite a scoop at this past Monday's GLAAD Awards ceremony: it seems that the folks behind award-winning gay flick Quinceañera are bringing their multiculti coming-of-age story to the small screen, courtesy of ABC Family.

Here's a snippet from Polly's chat with Wash Westmoreland, who co-directed the film with partner Richard Glatzer:

Westmoreland said that he and Glatzer are working with ABC Family to turn the movie -- about a Latino family living in L.A.'s Echo Park neighborhood -- into a series for the generally wholesome channel. "They're being great," explained Westmoreland, "in fact they're encouraging us to be edgy and true to our story." So, yes, it sounds like you can expect to see the young gay Latino male character of Carlos (played by Jesse Garcia) looking for man-on-man love (or some version of it) on the TV show.

Pretty progressive stuff for a family channel, right? For more (including what's happening with the predatory gay couple from the film), head on over to the full story.

Echo Park! *makes hand gesture*

That is so great! After you guys reviewed the movie I watched it and I loved it right away. Jesse Garcia on a weekly basis is a very good thing. His kind of character is rarely shown on television so it will be refreshing to see his character evolve during the course of the season. I don't care if they change some storylines for the televion show as long as they keep the type of relationships the main characters had with each others. The love and respect between them was a beautiful thing to watch.

I Really Liked The Film....

and I can see where there would be fodder for a series, but I can only imagine the flak ABC is going to get for having several ongoing gay characters in a series on that particular network. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out. And yes, I'm looking forward to seeing Jesse Garcia weekly as well......

wow, ABC Family is going to

wow, ABC Family is going to air something like this? I thought Pat Robertson owned it, lol. We know how Pat is still stuck in the 1950's with his views on gays. BTW, who is the stud in the picture? Jesse Garcia?
