Crazy rumor of the day: Robbie and Becks to be Desperate Househusbands?

Last week we ran our from-the-horse's-mouth report from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry that there will be a gay couple moving onto Wisteria Lane next season.

And now the Internet is atwitter with completely unsubstantiated rumors that Cherry has apparently cherry-picked his ideal stars to play the roles: footballer David Beckham and erstwhile pop star Robbie Williams. Cherry apparently said the following (according to Contactmusic.com, who doesn't list a source and has a habit of printing complete crap, so take it with a shaker of salt):

"David and Robbie are perfect to star as the new neighbours' best friends; the gorgeous, eccentric couple flown over from Blighty."

"We haven't had that kind of wow for the wives since Jesse Metcalfe left and we want it to cause such a stir when they turn out to be together."

According to Showbiz Spy, Cherry added:

"David's keen, but though the obvious choice was to work with Tom Cruise, we wanted someone who matches him in height and well, Britishness, so Robbie is the one."

"They're both funny, game for a laugh and ridiculously macho, so it should work wonderfully ... the English are pitch-perfect for sending themselves up."

Well, this all seems a bit fantasy-castingy to me. It would be lots of fun, granted, but I don't know that a sports star with a ridiculously massive contract and a busy modeling schedule would have the time to commit to a regular role. Williams, on the other hand, could probably pencil in the gig between rehab stints.

So let's say this is all rumor, but an opportunity to start a discussion. If the hubbies are indeed meant to be British, whom would you cast?
